Cause everyonce in a while, I just want to jump in to a giant space battle with lots of things blowing up left and right. Unfortunately, none of the FS2 retail missions really fit the bill.
So, anybody care to recommend a decent one? Destroyers and bombers and corvettes and everything blowing each other up?
-
Those are rather hard to come by, since hardly anyone has the computer to run such a gargantuan battle, and that Freespace 2 could never support such a large battle.
Looks like you're out of luck, mate. ;)
-
They aren't hard to make, just uhh..line up two fleets, beam-free-all, and launch a ****load of fighters.
-
And meanwhile watch your preocessor and graphics card cry.
I made one once just for the hell of it and even my comp (2.8 AMD 3200+) couldnt handle it for very long. It was kinda like a slideshow for a while until most of the capital ships were destroyed. Was still pretty cool though I have to admit...
-
The last few missions of Derelict fit the bill, I would say. As does the last mission of Technological Superiority.
-
Did anyone get the 2nd Great War Part II off the VW Archives before they died?
-
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check those out.
Probably should've been more clear - it doesn't need to have dozens of capital ships facing off or a death star or anything. Something like a pair of destroyers facing off, maybe supported by a corvette each or something, with a fair quantity of fighters of bombers flying around to keep things interesting.
Something vaguely akin to Clash of the Titans from FS1, well, if the galatea had stuck around instead of running off like that - and if they were FS2 capships because FS1 capship battles are awfully dull.
-
Oh, well if that's what you wanted, try "One Step Too Far" on the original FS2 missions.
-
Is that a multiplayer mission?
-
CoW has a few biggies.
Apparently some people have problems in running CoW with HTL (FSO versions >5.3 IIRC), but it works fine in retail.

Nope. If you had GOTY edition, it should be in the "Single Missions" in the Tech Room.
-
that explains that. I don't have the GotY edition, and the vanilla edition came with zero single player standalones. Is that one downloadable anywhere, or is it goty only?
-
Well I'm sure one of those nice people with GOTY would put it up for download...
Please?
-
It's up for download somewhere around here...
-
"Caught in the middle" is a good single shot mission with a big tons of fighters duking it out
-
Also didn't Aeos Affair have a significant amount of missions like this? I remember there being one with roughly 5 destroyers and 4 smaller ships all going at it at one point.

Yea... I had it. It was up on swoosh. But, now that swoosh is gone.... :(
If any body wants them PM me.

Oxymoron.
-
Eheheh, i think if i had much time to finish to modelize some SW ship so, i think i will made a mission as the battle of endor.
But,, i'm just beginning my first model (X wing).
-
Solar Wars will have a few BOE type missions in, but you will have objectives rather then watching capitol ships duke it out. But Solar Wars is still being worked on :p
-
Download Babylon Project and get ready for my rendition of the climactic battle of Babylon 5. Sheridan's multi-planetary fleet (15 odd capital ships) vs 15 odd planetary defence satelites (particle beam and cruise missile platforms). I can guarantee chaos and devestation on a huge scale.

Try this: Scramble.zip (http://www.freewebs.com/pyro-manic/Scramble.zip)
It's my only released single mission, from a few years back. It's not entirely BoE, but there are several capships, lots of fighters and bombers, and it's fun. It's ooooold, and I haven't played it for ages, but let me know what you think. :)
EDIT: no idea if this will work with SCP or not. Built and tested only in Vanilla FS2.
-
What is exactly Vanilla FS 2 ?
I know the Japanese project in which it had some new special effect and add a new moveable reticle. But Vanilla, uhuh..
-
Vanilla FS2 is the original FS2.
-
Heheh - yeah. Vanilla as in vanilla ice cream - standard, normal, not unusual in any way. ;)
-
Okay, i thought it was a special version of Fs 2 with news stuff like do the SCP.

The last mission (the name escapes me at the moment) in the FS2 main campaign is a Battle of Endor ish.
-
:welcome:
Vut it has no destroyers in it, of course you could open up the mission in FRED and change the Lemnos To Hecate, Thanatos to demon, etc.
-
I'll second Great War 2 Part 2. I had more capship kills in that campaign than in all the other campaigns I've played combined. Add to that missions where you have about twenty different beam cannons attacking one ship, and I think that qualifies as Battle of Endor. :p
-
Is there anyway to get any links to some of said BoE missions (that can be played in the mission simulator area of tech room)? I'm not lazy, but takes too long to try and load multiple pages in different windows and search 10 threads at the same time. (I wish I could load 10 at a time).
BTW...what is great war 2 and where can I get it....I'm curious...

i thought the VW Archives died a horrible death.
-
2ndGWpt2 is basically a big war, you have about 29 Colossi and you get trapped beyond a knossos. there are a LOT of BoE missions in it, it fun tho. The rest is classified level Alpha.
-

I think I'll skip that one.

Getter Robo G made a BoE-ish mission with about 6 mods in that one mission. And guess what he ran it off of: P2 400.
-
:bump:
I just found a great Battle of Endor mission... and I can say that this might be the mission that finally satisfies the Battle of Endor requirement without falling victim to Battle of Endor Syndrome (http://www.volitionwatch.com/articles/ArticleDisp.php?ID=26). And the best part is, it was released back in 2000 for retail FS2. :)
I was going through the VolitionWatch Archives, checking out the old missions, when I remembered that I had never played Project Road Block (http://archives.volitionwatch.com/fs2/review/display.php3?MissID=225), a mission that I downloaded a long time ago but never got around to until now. Well, go download and play it at your first opportunity. ;) I highly recommend it - it's got a Sathanas, three destroyers, three corvettes, seven cruisers, a meson bomb-equipped AWACS, and all the fighters and bombers you could want. And it's long... my mission time was 36 minutes and change. But it's fun and challenging; and IMHO well worth the download.
My only gripe with the mission is the loadout... you're given a Tauret and aren't allowed any other ships to choose from. But the Tauret's got a crappy energy reserve and can't carry the Maxim. So you might want to give yourself some extra options in FRED before diving in.
-
Sweet! *downloads* now let's hope it doesn't crash my FRED
-
Looks like a cool mission, except for the fact that it doesn't seem to like Open. Screen started rapidly flashing back and forth from the desktop to a blank screen, and the subsequent error message mentioned something that sounded like a SEXP about subsystem strength. Good old retail...it backs you up when you need it. :)
-
*cough http://www.geocities.com/ngtm1r/Homecoming.zip cough*
Three cruisers, two fighter wings, a bomber wing, and an Iceni vs. an Orion and three fighter wings enough for a BoE?
-
That probably isn't a good way to sell your mission, as a 'proper' mission that is of course.
-
Silent Threat discussion split.
Has anyone else played PRB yet?
-
i have. and in one word, i can describe it. AWESOME.
-
I tried, but I had absolutely no luck in getting through the whole thing. Your wingmen die way too quickly, as usual, leaving you to get ripped to shreds by everything. :p The only time I managed to successfully make it to the third part of the mission, the support ship repairing the Koreth was taken out by something or other, meaning that repairs completely stopped. I didn't realize it, until I saw that all of my bomber wingmen were dead and that there were still two Molochs hanging around that I was powerless to kill. That round didn't go so well. :p Since the mission is so long, I didn't really feel like replaying it right away, so I'll save it for another time. As I said, though, I wasn't even able to get the thing to run in the SCP, for whatever reason.
On the other hand, I just finished up playing Dante's Ascension, which, although very challenging, was one of the best campaigns I've ever played. Very good stuff. :D However, while trying to delete an extra pilot file while playing this campaign, I idiotically managed to delete my main one, completely erasing my completions of both the main campaign and the Port. Looks like I have some more playing ahead of me. :p

I played it years ago (2002?) and from what I remember it was quite good indeed. I should play it again, really. Same for Derelict and Warzone - haven't played them for at least 2 years....
-
Oo... since i'm relatively new to the FS modding community i haven't realized how long these campaigns have been around.

yes. but their files live on.
i thought the 2nd Great War was the player with the shivans at first. i couldn't get too far in the campaign though because then i started crashing every mission. wtf.

Odd. Try it now. Please not that I make no apologies for the possible noob-ishness of this mission - 'tis very old, and I haven't touched it since I made it... good grief, nearly three years ago... :shaking:
Scramble.zip (http://www.freewebs.com/pyro-manic/Scramble.zip)
I'll say only one thing - watch out for the beams.... ;)
-
PRB???
i'm doin' a BOEish campaign...and having troubles because of that...
the mission runs slowly -with all the graphics at minimun- and the player's performance is not much important...damn... i was thinking instead of making a single fight, warp in different waves of warships into the battlefield...
-
pff. i NEARLY succeeded in making a BOE-ish missions once, (6 Destroyers, 2 Iceni's, 2 Juggernauts, 6 corvettes, 4 cruisers, and a helluva lot of fighters and bombers) but FRED crashed and I couldn't make it again :(
-
Try Sol: A History. It's got a couple of good missions that satisfy the urge for big battles.

S:AH is good not just for the battles. The storyline... the plot... It's all pretty awesome. My only complaint would be the beamlessness of the early parts, but that's not too bad because then the battles last longer without capships tearing other capships to shreds in seconds, and the player has a more piviotal role that way. It reminded me of FS1, without the fuzzy graphics. :)
-
well, duh. early in S:AH, the story takes place during FS1. no beams in 2335 ;) of course, no beams does suck. nothing but firing plasma lasers... must take at least an hour :D
-
It's both bad and good in a way. Bad meaning that there's no spectacular beam-fiesta lightshows, but it's good because you actually have to engage the capships yourself and you can't rely on beam cannons to do all the work for you. I also noticed an overwhelmingly large amount of Fenris/Leviathan cruisers. But all they had back then was cruisers and destroyers so that was to be expected.
It only takes a while if you attack the fighters/bombers first. This is a good FS2 strategy, but I found it ineffective in S:AH. For FS1 style beamless battles, it's better to take out the capships so they aren't pestering you while you rip at the fighters. It's not that they can pester you too much though, cause they don't even have AAA. :D

Worst, most annoying campaign I ever played. How the heck did the GTVA build seven more Colossusus (Collosi? Eh?) in a single year? Lame! And how does a small transport capture a Sathanas juggernaut?
Worst. Campaign. Ever.
But the mass-beam-fests made up for all the stupidity. Even if all you did was watch.
-
I have this Campaign.. but in Mission 1 i have always a CTD when 5 Shivan Cruisers jump in.
Maybe i should try Retail FS2..
I think from story SGWP2 was bad, i think it's only a Fun-Campaign :D

I found that a lot of the missions in that campaign crashed. I can't remember if the download was a VP, but a good way around those missions is to play the campaign through the techroom.
There was one cool mission where you took out an entire fleet of Shivans. That was hard, but fun. :)
-
blasphemy!
*downloads sgwp2*
[EDIT] AGH, nevermind. i kept crashing in the 3rd mission.
-
Told you. :p

no, i meant when i first downloaded it. so there. :p

Not FS2, but there is Battle of Endor... heh.
