Title: GL woes
Post by: ShadowWolf_IH on January 18, 2005, 12:10:07 pm
i have a problem.

video card: sis 650_651-M650_740

current gl version 1.1 is les than required version 1.2.
switch video modes or update drivers.

i got that in fred when i opened 3.6.5

ok so since i can't switch modes i went ahead an updated the driver,

it got to be even more fun......

i still got that error, and another when i tried to run the launcher for 3.6, and 3.6.5

failed EnumAdapterModes in UpdateAntialiasList.

it gets to be even more fun.....

after the failed enum......warning, i hit ok, it pops up again, and i hit ok, and it pops up yet a third time, so i hit ok a third time, then the launcher opens.  There are no video modes listed in the video tab of the launcher.  video mode is set for d3d, so i then switch it to open gl, i get video modes then, and as soon as i attempt to play fs2, the comp hardlocks on a black screen, i don't even get to the SCP splash screen.

I have uninstalled the updated drivers so that i could at least play 3.6, no good, i reinstalled the driver from the cd, still no good.  I am thinking about doing an fdisk just to use 3.6 again.  but that won't solve the problem for me in 3.6.5.

your advice is sorely needed, and remember...i'm a computer idiot, please use small words.

[edit]
i would have sent you a debugging form, but it isn't spitting one out.   It is also failing to generate a text caps file.[/edit]

The problem most certainly is your video card, which is an underpar integrated adapter. It doubt it even supports OpenGL 1.2.

Let's see if I can confirm that one...

thanks fury i apreciate your help.

also, where do you go to confirm this, cause if i have to go and get another damned card, i want to make sure that it is going to work.

OK, it does in fact seem that it does support OpenGL 1.2. Don't expect stellar performance though.

Seems like your drivers are screwed. What operating system you've got?

I think you might get it to work if you force standard vga drivers, uninstall SiS ones, and delete oem inf files referring to the adapter and then install the latest ones. Get me your operating system and I might be able to guide you through it.

Ouch. Maybe not then, I can remember W98 only vaguely.

Let's try anyway...
- Make sure you've got latest SiS vga/agp drivers downloaded from sis.com
- Go to control panel > system > device manager > display adaprer > select your adapter (the sis one) and go to it's properties > update driver > select standard vga > update > reboot.
- Go to control panel > add/remove programs > remove sis vga/agp drivers > reboot.
- Open explorer and go to c:\windows\system, select tools > folders > make hidden files visible.
- Search for files:
filename: oem*.inf
contains words: sis 650
- remove found files to recycle bin

Instead of c:\windows\system, it might be c:\windows\inf
I can't remember if the inf folder existed in w9x or if those used system instead.

On Win9x, .inf files go to c:\windows\inf, others go to c:\windows\system ;)

What DirectX version do you have? You need at least 8.1, IIRC.

Also, you might look up a video card tweak guide, there are some settings in the BIOS that might have stability effects.

Oh, and finally, your video 'card' isn't sharing an IRQ with something, right?

actually, since i can't make heads or tails of things, and i am really getting frustrated with it all, i am currently backing up my files and doing an fdisk.  once it is done, i am not going to instal the stock drivers, but instead get the updated one and go straight to it.

thanks for the help guys, but if this doesn't cure the problem i am sure that my wallet and a .38 will.

:p Or just your billfold. Get a better gfx card... get an ATi, but stay away from the 9200's

If he is using a Silicon Integrated Systems 650, I doubt that the board even has an AGP slot. In which case buying an updated Video card will not help without additional new components.

nope it hasa crappy cnr slot, which why i am currently in the market for a new MB.  on the bright side, once i do an fdisk, and get the new drivers i should be able to play with 3.6.5, other than that...i can at least get into 3.6 again.  currently i can play 3.6 on my secondary comp....so it's not a total loss.
