Title: I need a new mother board
Post by: redmenace on January 18, 2005, 12:41:17 pm
I am looking for a new matherboard for my new computer. I am looking for nVidia chipset for AMD XP processors. I have heard that this one is good.
MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum

Any suggestions?

nForce2 should be indeed a good choice now that the chipset finally has working IDE drivers.

Asus are a good manufacturer. Last Athlon XP machine I built, I used an Asus A7N8X board. Can't remember if it's an nF2 board though...

The A7N8X is the highend nF2 mobo from Asus.  There are a couple of other variants that are cheaper(removed or disabled functions).  But, yes, unless they've made a version with PCI express that mobo is the best Athlon board you can get.

A7N8X-E
Absolutely the best mobo for AMD XP I have ever used.  I have had NO complaints about it at all. It is also excellent for overclocking ( I got a 3200+ running at 2.86 right now on it).

I think I am torn between the A7N8X-E and the MSI Delta2.

Any ideas for a case?

Raa,
Your CPU multiplier could be locked if u bought the retail chip instead of the OEM (green chips are retail and brown are OEM). You probably only have capability to adjust your FSB (not your multiplyer) Thats too bad because as long as you have a barton core in your AMD XP (as your 2800+ should) you can get in the 2.5-2.8 range. I used to have a 2500+ that I could safely take to 2.5, but then I got this 3200+ for the awesome price of 110$ and can get into the 2.8's stably. I could probably reach 3.0-3.2 if I had some better ram but....

Well, I think its more like someone smart completely removed the activation sequence from the install but I dont know. I buy the OSes for all the computers that I sell to people but for myself there is quite a different story:) .
