I'm a huge fan of the series, as everyone else here is as well. I was wondering if anyone would be up for it if I tried to organize as many members of the mod, programming, graphic, and storyline community together and actually work on a fan made Freespace 3. I think, if everyone loves this series as much as I do, we could make one hell of a game that we could all be proud of and have fun playing. With all the talent I've seen (and I've only seen the tip of the iceberg) we could make a story driven campaign that could be one of the grandest things the gaming community in general has ever seen, and who knows, maybe we'd even get a nod from the masters at Volition.
Most campaigns out there feature a shift from the main storyline, focusing on pirates, a second shivan incurrsion right after Capella, etc. I think with this, we should give the community what they want... an answer to many questions in one definitive game.
What are the shivans? What does ETAK really do? How did they communicate with Shivans? What happened to Bosch? What will happen when the GTVA opens a portal to Sol? How can the Shivans come back in the third game?
If this project did come to pass, I (as well as everyone else I'm sure) would want it to stay as true to Volition's vision as possible. No cheesy unrealistic things (like fleets of hades or colossus destroyers or big big GTVA super ships), I mean heck, what'd the Colossus take to build? 12 years and tons of resources? You'd figure by this point, the humans would be putting all their efforts into the portal creation.
Anyways, I am just throwing this idea out there to see what anyone thinks.
FREESPACE 3 - Based on the FS2 Source Code Project
Because alot of the community believe in the saying: If it ain't {V} it ain't Freespace 3.
Trust me this sort of thing has been said before and a few members may flame you, they won't be nasty but its because saying FS3 hits a sore spot with us all.
Alot of people have tried many things to push this idea forward, the gaming company I part own even attempted to purchase the rights to FS3 from Interplay but that fell through when their French counterparts got bought out.
But many many fine FREDers have made campaigns that attempt to forward the Freespace storyline so check those out if your growing bored and wanting to know what MIGHT have happend :)
*EDIT*: Go here Clicky Clicky (http://fs2.kissifrot.com/) for a list of FS2 campaigns, alot of them have their own ideas on what might have happend after Capella.

No, i don't think it is a god Idea to let the community doing Fs 3.
It's not about the scp possibility or the skill the community have but, it's only because of the scenarii.
We don't know exactly where come Shivans, the same for the ETAK Project.

Just tossing an idea out there. Didn't actually know if anyone tried it yet or not.
I just was curious. It'd be a nice thing to see though.

Hasn't this kind of been discussed already?
New ideas and storylines are already developed in mods, user made campaigns, and the source code project. Having one joint effort throughout the community would certainly get things done, but I think everyone has a different idea of what FS3 should be like, thats why you see such varied ideas in mods and campaigns. Trying to get them to work together would mean sacraficing a lot of individual creativity.
I think the only way people will accept someone else's idea of what FS3 should be, will be if its made by V.
