Commisar Putin builds new statue to Stalin. World expresses utter lack of surprise. (//"http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPStory/LAC/20050120/REPO20-2/TPInternational/Asia")

It looked good on paper...

Mmm-mmmmm, smell the irony...

"A monument will be erected to those who took part in [leading the war against Adolf Hitler], including Stalin," Oleg Tolkachev, Moscow's senator in the upper house of parliament, told Ekho Moskvy radio.
This sounds okay...
state television channels have shown a number of prime-time television shows in recent months depicting him in a positive light
...but it looks like The Decline has begun.

Stalin oversaw the killing of more people than Hitler did. Hell, he oversaw the killing of more people than anyone else in history.

I thought he only killed 2m as opposed to Hitler's 6m odd?
-
Hitler killed between 12 and 26 million, including approximately 6 million Jews, whereas Stalin killed between 5 and 20 million.
-
Wow...Castro really does have a heart. :p

On the topic of Putin, I am in no way surprised. Ever since he came into office, I was worried for Russia. For some reason an ex-KGB operative as the Premi...er, President of Russia just spelled a bad message.
He needs to go. Now. Otherwise, we're faced with a reborn-USSR. Not immediately, but over a gradual period, unless he's replaced with a candidate that's more pro-capitalism and pro-democracy.

Are you including casualties from war in that too? I was refering to those killed in purges etc.
Are you including civilian casualties in that number too?
-
Stalin's are from the purges and other killings of civilians, Hitler's from the Holocaust and other killing of civilians.
-
I presume the purges total includes those in the Gulags?
-
I believe so, I'll check.
EDIT: Yes, they do.
-
Err..... should be a bit more than two million then.
-
Damnit, I hate when people change their campaign icons. Its how I quickly identify who's who. I'll have my revenge one day KT, one day...
yes, I notice these sorts of thing.

I had the 5-20 million estimate, not the two million.

The "6-million Jews" thing is bull****, BTW.
For starters, the deaths at Auschwitz 'official' figures range from like 1mil to 4mil - when recovered records put the actual figure at about 74,000 recorded deaths.
In the autumn of 1989 the Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev opened Soviet archives, and the public saw for the first time, the complete register of deaths at Auschwitz ‑ which speaks as a key document of 74,000 dead.
And the Germans weren't exactly care-free in their record keeping. They were totally anal about having every ****ing thing written down and triple-stamped.
Stalin and Mao both killed somewhere to the order of two times as many people as Hitler.

I was just pulling data from the Wikipedia...
-
Everywhere I've ever looked I've seen Stalin ranked as the #1 mass murderer in human history.

Cain did better.
He killed 1/4 of the population of the Earth in the blink of an eye......:nervous:

Apparently not. Remember how he was banished, went off, to some land and started a family? Brought that up one time in a bible argument with my mom.
-
Those people don't count. I've had that exact same argument many a time.
So we'll assume they were corporeal manifestations of the Divine hoping to get his homosexual groove on.
But even then, I suppose for killing 1/4 of the population of the Earth - Cain also fathered enough progeny to double the previous population of the Earth. So he's probably up by one, in God's eyes.
-
Yeah, but what was the population of the Earth back then? They'de all fit into a stadium, with room enough left over for Ye Olde Peanut Vendor to roam the isles dispensing salty snacks..
