Title: My new ship is flying backwards!!??
Post by: Pilot Of The US on January 22, 2005, 05:47:37 am
Ok, ive finally finished my cruiser model, but the problem is that i think i screwed up the position in Truespace. And now, when i put the model in-game and tell it to move, it flys backwards and looks really stupid. Also when i place my model in FRED2, it's nose is facing the camera (while all other ships engines face the camera).

How do i correct this problem, and if possible fix the problem without having to re-export from Truespace.

Ive tried setting up an eye point, and centering it. Nothing seems to correct this problem.

Well, from what little I know I think you do have to re-export.

But you can import POF data with POFCS, so you don't have to enter it all in manually again.

IF he imports data he's going to have to change all the negatives into positives (and visa versa) on the X-axis though or all the points will be in the wrong places.

Still that may be easier than doing them all again.

oh well........... I wonder why it seems to me that you cant specify where the front is on a model. or how you tell if you've got it backwards, before you try it in-gane?

An axis is reversed somewhere.  Some programs like to do this when exporting to .cob format (Blender, for example).

I used 3d Max. im just export to 3ds and then import the 3ds into Truespace. Export to cob and convert to pof.

I get loads of freaky errors with the .3ds format (edges being detached and the like)

Load the cob  in truespace. If the ship points to the bottom left corner in default view then you've got it the right way round.

you think thats bad, freelancer's model convertier is really whack, ya gotta not only point the front of the ship in the direction of the x axis, but flip it on its side. it seems noone can agree on the names of the variables for each axis.

but dont change it now, im used to it at the momen, maybe pcs2 will allow the modder to specify which axis becomes wich axis.

The easy way in TS is to select the ship, then click on "Move axis to center of object", and then click "Normalize rotation". The ship will be automatically oriented the right way. If you don“t want to see the axis in the middle of the ship, press delete to delete the axis, and select the ship. The axis information stays in the object, even after you delete the axis.

Another good tip is to work with the "Object info" window open. It shows object rotation, wich needs to be zero on all 3 axis for the ship to point the right way in FS.

I cant use the max->exporter because i use 3D Max R2.5. and according to Styxx or someone else, a plugin cant be made or it'd take too much time or something. This is because of some data changes that happened after 2.5. Not really sure exacltly what the problem is.

I tried 3d max 4,  but the plugin refused to load. And i would try max 6 but i hear you need winXP to run it.

you do need xp for max 6.  I run 98 on my main comp and xp on my secondary.

You don't need XP, but you need an NT based version of windows, like 2k or XP.

Ok, ive re-exported my model and it's around the right way this time. I also took the oputunity to make the textures look a little better :D

Im going to start re-inputing all the turret, docking and firing point data. I've still got my old model, which is the wrong way around, so I'll compare the data in there and re-enter it on my new model (adjusting the values, due to modified model) ;)

I might post a pic, if i can get it to show in the tech-room :hopping:

Even though i attach the "in tech room" flag.

actually, open up the model with ModelView 32, and press Ctrl+C and paste it in an imaging program (paint, paintshop, etc)

yeah! why not, ill do that asap:D

Anyone got any answers as to why ships sometimes dont showup in the tech room even after you add the "in tech room" flag?

That's not the flag you're looking for. Try "in tech database".

ok, ive fully fixed my model (it doesnt have Lods or derbits). It's flying correctly now. If anyone wants to have a look at it, here's the link (http://www.geocities.com/hyrulecastleau/myfinishedstuff.html)
It's not a very good ship, coz it the first ship ive ever made. It also uses modified helios, that dont seem to fire for some reason. Also has partial shields:D

Well, follow the link above and click on the "Download" link on the page that opens up. download the zip file. Then open it up. Extract the document called "Alcoveia Ship Table" and open that up in microsoft wordpad or something. And there you have it, my table file!
