Title: vasudan destroyer WIP
Post by: beatspete on January 22, 2005, 12:27:45 pm
I don't do much freespace modeling these days but i was getting pissed of at my 747 model.

Its a vasudan destroyer, no turrets or anything at moment, really just for looking at.  Textures are just temporary. I'm not very good at modeling stuff from my imagination, so I thought i'd put this up for some constructive critisism.
There's a lot of influences in it, from star destoryers to a sobek.  I started at the engines and worked forward, not sure how to finish the front, I want to give it 2 big beam cannons but i'm stuggling to get the balance between aggressive vasudan design and not looking shivan.  Earlier attempts were more like a ravana.
The central depression in the top of the rear half is for some big gun or radar.
No fighter bay at the moment but it won't be hard to make one.

I considered some oversized fins/ears, including 2 going out diagonally, but it looked too feline, and vasudans wuv fishes, not cats.

I'm only really going to model and texture this, cause I don't have teh skillz or time needed to get it into freespace, but I'll release it to anyone who wants it.

Any suggestions what to do with the front?  There's not much inspiration about as to how vasudans would mount large forward facing beams on a ship.

Ah yeah, about 1500 at the moment.

Model need more, more details and BIG smooth work:nod:

1500 polies...where I don't see them:wtf:

The engines...

The ship is too angular, needs smoothing, big time!

I rather like it.

I won't post that it resembles something phallic. Not this time.

As for sci-fi, it reminds me of some ship from Star Wars. Just can't remember which.

They can't be in the engines... I put more than that into my engines these days and still don't come near that number.  My guess is dirty boolean work followed by a triangulation.

Nah it is in the engines, the white/blue face is conical, doesn't really need to be.  The rest is triangulated with love, by hand.

I'm working through the surfaces on the back section, it'll have about 3x as many surfaces so much smoother.
I've got a nice idea for something to make it unique too...

I still maintain that there's something horribly wrong somewhere for that to be 1500 faces.  I mean, this has 1500 polys (not tri's, granted) and has 8 16-sided engines with a pseudo-spherical depression on the ends (conic with the center flattened out).  And it has SOOO much more detail.

Edit: realized you can't actually see the engines on that shot.  Here's a better one.  And it still comes in at around 2700 triangulated.

Been working on the back section.  The front isn't complete at all:

Not ideal textures, but a lot smoother.

Needs to be smoother still, but the design is pretty nice, so far. It does remind me slightly of a Demon.

I'd suggest giving it some curvy shapes sticking out a bit, like the Sobek has. I'd like to see it with those "ears" you mentioned. Sounds intriguing...

Also, model on some armour plates - the Hatshepsut and Sobek have a kind of carapace of that light brown armour plate, with darker brown superstructure. That'd help, I think...

Reminds me of a turtle. :)  You need to smooth it off alot, vasudan ships are all smooth with no sudden changes in their body design. I don't really like the rim on top either.
Looking cool though

Almost reminds me of a bulk cruiser (SW). Looks good to meh.

The back is getting there, but it's still far too uniform.  Vary the textures somehow (it may be tough with that shape) and get rid of any obvious faceting or straight lines.  The neck forward is not at all Vasudan, but with some work could get there.  I understand that the textures aren't near complete, so I'll refrain from comment on those.  And you may want to just re-do the head, as it's just a bit too odd for a Vasudan design.

Add a pair of Hat's tube-style fighterbay entrances on each side (4 total) of the main hull, up-size the model somewhat and you've got a carrier.

It needs more polies and smoothness and detail and such, but i have to say

This is much better than most user vasudan ships, this one actualy seems to have vasudan design elements.

Anyways, the indent in the front would be a good place to put the bridge/navigational area.

Beams should probably be placed on the sides, in such a way that they provide a preety good firing arc but can both be turned forwards in the event of an attack, like the main beams on the sobek but mabye more psoitioned to the sides.

Or add a pair of the Hatsheput's tube-style launch bays, decrease the size, and you've got a small carrier, of which we have considerably fewer...

The problem with Hatshepsut-style launch tubes is that I don't see a good place to integrate them into the hull.  If you look at the Hatshepsut, they actually form a structural element for much of the length of the primary hull.  I don't see a good way to do that here.
