yeah, this shot rocks, so i thought I'd share it
(http://img184.exs.cx/img184/20/screen102ga.jpg)
And i'll go ahead and pitch my new nebula poofs
no more color artifacts, nice, aesthetically pleasing 512x512 .tga (i can recompress to any format requested) nebula poofs, purple, blue, and green (edit: red too!). They just look better, and those stringy default ones were pissing me off
anyone got a place for me to host?
-
that depends...can i have them?
just kidding, make yourself a folder on my site and put em there, if you have forgotten the info, IM me in MSN.
oops for some reason i was thinking that Raa had done this. lol. you just get so used to seeing someone's name after every post ;)
anyway Tur, i'll host it for you, everyway to contact me in listed, so just pick one. we'll get me the files and i will host them for you and give you the link. cool?
-
Holy... :jaw:
:D
-
well, I already responded to that shot in the '1337 screenshots' thread but I'll reiterate: :yes: I have it as my background now

wow.. that almost looks like a real picture

That is... :eek2:
...One beautiful shot :D
-
Very impressive. Almost looks like it has bumpmaps or something. Engine glows kinda spoil it though.
-
huh..just...amazing:eek2:

an example
Edit: note that 'old' was resized from 256x256 to 512x512 in photoshop using the bicubic method after being switched to RBg colors from Indexed colors, so it looks much better than if i had left it indexed and resized to nearest pixel
Edit2: hey, what'dya think would happen if i added specmaps and glowmaps for the poofs?
-
nothing, light doesn't have effects on them, I suppose.

the old ones look much better.
-
all i was trying to do was get rid of the stringyness and the color distortions, and i succeeded. They look better ingame, because you only see part of the image at a time, and this looks much more nebulous than those overdone wisps.
the other ones look better too, purplepoof 1 was a bad example, my favorite was red2, but i was in a hurry
edit: better example:

heres the poofs, just a little update, and they come in .tga and .dds
-
The old ones are better.
-
actually i like the new ones better
-
50%/50% - first old and second new are better

A Turin Turambar turun ambartanen.
I see someone else here reads Sillmarillion...
Great pic Turambar! kickass!
-
I guess that if they are better or not depends on how they work in game. Just judging the aesthetic of the images alone, the older look better
-
Then again, you have to think "nebula" before judging, I think. The old one looks too much like a ball of lightnings. To be accurate, looks like those close up shots of cancerous formations. I think it'd help if the new one was thiner... hmm, darker, technically.
-
Be careful with that idea.
If it's too dark, you'll be able to see how the ships just disapear (they do) in nebulas.
Almost like only lod 0 is loaded.
BTW this is not really your kind of taste, right?

But that's just it, the old ones look more like nebulas.
-
Better, but if anything, I'd go straight to animated poofs. :)
-
again, i did it mostly to get rid of those stringy things coming off the sides, to make the nebula smoother, more gaseous, and have no more annoying color artifacts. these do all three.
i have a feeling that animation would make it too busy, and no, the explosive looking one isnt quite to my taste for a poof, its cool looking for its own thing though
meh, i'll rework that purple one and hell, i'll put up jpegs of all of the poofs

I disagree, but we can't argue about that, right? :p
daBrain, actually, I think that new one is the best of the lot, but I wonder how good it does combinated with other poofs, with it being a bright spot with dark surroundings. I'm afraid it'd look like a series of spots in space, no?
-
We need Freelancer-esque nebulas
-
all high quality .jpg's, you could save them to disk and put them in your effects folder if you want, just rename them to the name above the nebula

actually my idea of a neb is different from both the new and the old versions (the closer one is probably the first of the new set), so I was just considering that the older look more detailed (except the last one) althought the increased size.
But again, this means almost nothing, since what is important is just the in game result
edit->I posted just before turambar...
thanks to him for the efforts, anyway. Aesthetically speaking, my preferred is porbably purp02
-
@ Turambar feel free to use the radial blur.
As the player will fly always through the center of the poof, using radial to simulate nebula size is a good idea.
BTW This will also increase the feeling of speed.
-
I like the new purple ones. They seem to have more texture than the others, especially the first one. The others are just... blurry. Not blurry in a nebula kinda way, but blurry as in a low detail kinda way.
-
actually, youre not always flying through the center, otherwise flying through the nebula would be very repetitive and tiresome
actually, you fly through any randomly selected part of them, which is why you dont see the exact same thing every poof. Or at least, thats what I noticed
anyway, im gonna hijack my own thread and use it as WIP for my Ptah, I'll post my pic when i get home
Edit: screw it, new thread
