well the reformation was going smoothly then suddenly
sp2
dun dun dun!
it installs, I reboot,
"error, important file missing, ntsomethingsomething"
:wtf:
NO!
:blah: :mad2: :(
/*incerts xp install disk*/
xp installer is looking at your hard drive... for three hours...
/*force the powe off*/
/*turns computer back on*/
the 'good' hard drive: "click click click" "click click click" "click click click"
me::confused: :( :doubt: :shaking: :mad2: NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
/*looks at banck acount*/ funds == joke
well, unless someone wants to wire me a couple hundred bucks for a new hard drive (I have a pay pall acount by the way) I'm going to be out of touch more or less for the next 2-3 weeks. I can still get on like I am right now in the down stairs computer, but it sucks, or on the school computers, and all my important files (includeing my vast porn stores, oh and FSO source, asorted art files, ect...) are on the SATA drive so they are all ok, but I am functionaly shot down. bye for now.

That´s funny! I had the same problem 3 days ago. Had to reformat 3 times, because as soon as i finished installing all the crap, i would get overrun by virus and worms...
Lost a lot of data, but my drives are still in working order.
Virus and worm creators should have their dicks cut off and fed to them with mustard. They should be covered in honey, dipped in shiit and buried in an ant hill, leaving only the head out. They should have their tiny little dicks tied to a drag racer, and have the green light come on. They should be put in jail next to a big black dude named Bubba, where they would take it up the arse and answer to the name "biatch"!!

:hopping: :hopping:

I can send you... 2 dollars.....
-
lesson: don't ever install sp2. i learnt that the hard way, too.
-
Hey Bob, you wouldn't be able to install your OS in the SATA you mentioned would you?
-
Hmm.... My best idea at the moment is to hook up the working drive to a computer with a CD-RW (or, if possible, a DVD-RW drive), burn everything you need off of it, then format that and use it for your system drive.
-
much better than at work
I installed a spare hot-swap hard-drive on a server at work, and had to reboot so server 2k would recognize the drive so i could format it. Now the place closes at 11pm and rather not be at work at the time so i rebooted the server at home through remote desktop. When i came in today the things lit up like a christmas tree and the RAID array is dead. Its still running but slow as hell and now for some reason their internet is dead so i can't remote in now.
*sigh*

200 bucks? Are you buying yourself a new video card, or a new hard drive? :p

Download the XP SP2 network install and do all of your reformatting offline (with the network cable unplugged or your wireless router turned off) until you install that. Then go about everything else.
Apparently the average time for a vulnerable XP machine with no patches is 30 minutes.
-
That was... colourful. :p

Better yet, use Partition Magic to create a 1 or 2 gygabyte partion, and install XP there. It won´t delete your data, but you need to have a few gygabytes free in your SATA drive.
Can´t you rescue the other hard drive? Sometimes it´s a passing problem. Try to format again, and use "fdisk" to create the right partition and boot file. You could have the boot data corrupted. But that is easelly fixed.
You should save to buy another drive anyway. I have 3 hard drives in my system, 2 IDE and a 200gb SATA. And one of my IDE is divided in 2 partitions, so i basically have 4 HDD.
Btw, is your copy of XP "legal"? Because SP2 has a problem with "non legal" XP, you need to change your serial for it to work. It´s an easy process. Let me know if you need it.

This is an all too familiar scene for me too Bobboau. I just wanted to make it known to you that you arent the only person having problems like this.
-
the hard drive screams now when I turn on the computer, I'm prety sure it's dead.
I probly could boot from my SATA drive, but I will not, that is for data only.
-
Then your only choice is spending $60 and getting another 80GB SATA HD to boot from.
-
did you try a low level format? ive seen dtives that sounded like death purr like kittens after a low level format.
-
Do you seriously want/need pay pal bucks to get back on line? Given the value I've gotten out of Freespace and the source code project, I have no problem at all sending $10-$20 your way....
-
I'd send you the money, Bob, but considering the €->$ exchange rate, you'd lose a lot of money...
-
if you want to give me some cash that'd be great, but I'm not actualy asking, I'll get it sooner or later.
-
It's entirely up to you. You want it, you got it.
I paid $50.00 for Doom III and never even got half way thru it. Freespace 2 OTOH has stayed with me ever since it was released, however long ago that was.... ;) So value per dollar wise, better you get some dough than Mr Carmack... :)
-
Bobb, you might want to post your paypal account. :)
-
BTW Don't say why you're giving him the money. Remember the licences says that the SCP can't make money out of the source code :P
You're just giving him money cause he's a nice guy :D
-
correction:
-> lending money :p
Bah, if you want, bob, pm me. I have a paypal account too.

Or.....scavenge and salvage some old PC for a 3 or 4 GB hardrive, and then use that ONLY for the OS.
Pretty much like what I'm doing now. Got the darn thing for free too, since my uncle was pretty much throwing it away and I didnt want it to go to waste :D

Uhmm....it has to be a very old drive to work.
Most HDs used nowadays 'never heard of such' a process since they are pre-formatted and setup in the factory.
-
i have a better idea, how about people send me money to buy a nice 180 gig drive, and il send bob my old 20 gig :D
-
well if someone has a dependable 10 gig drive that'd be usefull too.
if people want to send me money I used the same [email protected] email to register on paypal.

Well, I have several of those HDDs - but the shipping costs would exceed the value of the drive itself by miles. :doubt:
-
I have 2 SCSI drives and a SCSI card that I dont need anymore. Their capacity is 4.8 gigs each. I will happily send them your way if u pay shipping.

How much do you need?
-
well I looked the other day the smallest drives available were $80-90 (80 gig), so if I can get 10 people to give me $10 I'll have more than enough to get going again.
-
Where were you looking? An actual brick and mortar store? Go to Newegg or something, you'll save yourself a good $30-40.

Well, find the actual, final price, the HD you really want, and I'll send you the total.
-
ok I got myself a new hard drive (finly got the paycheck in the bank) and got myself a 120 gig seagate (bout $100)
now what I need is a windows product key that hasn't been used in a good while and won't be for a good while, I activated last time just before this whole mess started so now I need a new key or I'm screwed, if anyone would be willing to let me use theres it will probly save me a huge amount of hassle.
-
So, don't need money after all?
"off to Tokyo Central, and preorders the new Last EXILE artbook"
Wheeeeeee!
and why can't you use your key again?
Oooooooh, would it be that your copy is not legit? oooooooh...
oooooooh!
Bad Boy :D
-
2k or xp? I have both.
-
well I could always use any money you give me :)
it's XP
and this copy of windows is legal, I'm useing the disck that came with the computer, the thing is I activated it just before the hard drive crashed wich was like a week ago. if you need a refresher on the timeline it's something like this
one month ago: turn my computer off in the morning, get home that night and it won't turn on. reinstall windows.
two weeks ago: get done installing most things, letting auto-majic updates handle all the windows related things like SP2 on it's own time. activate the new install
about a week ago: little popup blip in the lower right hand corner says "updates downloaded and ready to install" click on it and see SP2 lisens agreement. thinks"it's about time it got to this" runs the thing
ten minutes later: "the hard drive says: CLICK CLICK CLICK"
"the Bobboau says: godfuuckingdamnitmotherfucckingpeicofgodamnedfuuckin****facedmother..../*cries in the fetal position while shakeing back and forth*/"
last night: gets a new hard drive
five minutes ago: finishes SP2 without killing the computer, posts a mesage assking if anyone's got any spare activation keys.
if someone would be more comfortable PMing me that's fine, I'll alaways ask if I can use it before I do in the future.
-
If your copy is legit, you can just call up MS tech support to activate. If not, I can't help you.
