Post by: Black Wolf on January 25, 2005, 11:53:52 pm
Today is the day we celebrate the founding of our great nation by drinking, swimming, barbequing and watching as things blow up prettily.

Not to mention breaking the law, getting convicted and being shipped off to a remote island. So celebrate your heritage: steal something.

Mostly, though we don't get to blow things up as often as I'd like.

Umm the points of the big one represents the states (and teritories) of Australia, and the other 5 stars form the southen cross which can be seen in the southen hemisphere's night sky.

The cross is the Southern Cross, obviously. The other star is the Commonwealth Star - it has seven points, one for each state, and one for all the various Territories.

*Is waiting for the evening to set up the barbie and bust out the Bundy* :D

As I recall, only a small portion of Oz was ever a penal colony. The Americas saw far more use in that regard because they were so much closer.

Of course, it wasn't really very many truly hardened criminals in the first place, since they were usually hung or shot. It was the petty thieves and debtors and the like. A grand british psuedo-eugenics project to ensure that they would have as small a gene pool as possible.

Sure explains Charles.

It was Georgia that was used as penal colony. Virginia was colonized by treasure seekers who were not too bright, Massachusetts by crazy religious folks until everyone realized it was stupid, the rest of New England by slightly deviant crazy religious people from Massachusetts Maryland by Catholics, Pennsylvania as a refuge from religious persecution (for the most part), the Carolinas by a few rich people, and New York by the Dutch. Not quite sure where the colonists for New Jersey came from....
