Yes, as the title says. My first serious attempt to do a ship model, really, and very much a WIP. I'll be the first to admit it owes something of a debt to the Colossus in terms of design, though that was not intentional. Otherwise, though, I'd like opinions and ideas if you have any.
Please excuse the fuzzy pictures; Cinema4D won't save to any f****** reasonable image format and it was either this or .bmp.

For a beginning, it's looking good. But when i saw the first pict, i believed it was a gun.
-
When I saw the first pic, I thought it was part of the body of a Warlock destroyer from TBP.

Use a screen capture program, like Hypersnap. And get rid of the wireframe when posting pics.
As for the model, it looks like a shotgun. Needs a bucket load of work and detail before anyone can say anything. Work some more and then post again.
:)

printscreen key: the original screen capture device.

personally, i think its great... >_>

It can be difficult to pick out detail on an unlit and untextured model render in Cinema 4D, so I've gotten into the habit of doing render-as-editor. As for the gun look, I wanted it sleek-looking...and there's not much to be done about it now.
Oh yes, speaking of detail...(Non-fuzzy .gif images brought to you by Microsoft Picture It!, used to convert from non-fuzzy but ungodly huge .bmps)

Well this ship looks much better then my because I'm new in this too.
But this ship still looks small because of no details.
-
The design itself is good enough, the model itself if acceptable for FS2 standards. Need some more details like a command bridge, some guns, and maybe a radar dome, if you can do that.
If I were to rate it on a scale of ten, it would now get 6.5.
-
As a basic hull, it's not bad. The detail is still VERY low, but that's ok for a rough terran hull. I'm a little curious as to what it looks like under the nose, as there's something there but I can't tell what. I do like the proportions, and I see that same signature command tower that I've been putting on ships since I worked on the Raynor which is cool (it works really well here, it seems, though the perspective view can be misleading there). Out of curiousity, what program are you using to make that? Max?
-
@TopAce: I haven't got a clue how I'm going to turret this thing. That's part of the reason for the big blank expanses on the sides, though, because that's where I intend to place most of the turrets.
Of course, I have no clue how I'm going to texture it either...
@Stratcomm: Cinema4D v8.0. Semi-obsecure but professional-level modelling program. Expensive as all hell, but I bought it with a student discount as part of a 3D course I took in high school.
-
Yeah that first side pic sucked cause you counldn't make out hardly any details, but the second one (with the front view) is great.. It struck me immediately as some type of space submarine Like Bob's... If this was unintentional I say go for it as I think it would totally rock!!! Of if not then save this as is for someone else to take it in that direction while you do it another way... That's my opinion.

It looks a lot like the Colossus.

The current incarnation; and if you want it so much I can e-mail you two earlier versions of the model, Getter.

I'm probably going to decrease or do away with the projections on the side; they ruin the sleek look I was going for.
-
There are projections on the sides? :nervous: I didn't even notice until you said something about it. Perhaps you should take a shot of it with smoothing off.
Edit: having seen the sides, I will say that underside that the primary hull shape needs to be developed more. That protrusion underneath, for example, should be much more complex than a simple triangle. The same goes for what I assume are smoothed bevels out from the sides of the ship; the structure there isn't exactly useful and so makes the ship look less sleek. Were you to replace it with something more usable, you might not have the same problem with the proportions.
-
Smoothing is handled via a model tag in C4D...which must be deleted for it to be turned off and then cannot be replaced so far as I know. Presumably this is one of the reasons C4D is not widely used...
The front triangular thing is going to grow a beam turret or two, eventually. Or possibly a battery of torpedo launchers. I haven't quite decided.

-
Now that helps. Hopefully this won't mess up your work, but I'd encourage worrying about smoothing after you finish the model as opposed to now, since you aren't going to hit a polycount that's difficult to work with.
So, yeah you'll probably want to remove those bumps. There's no detail gained by their being where they are, and the form was better without their girth. The triangle on the bottom has to be a placeholder, but I'm just going to reiterate that you probably shouldn't have any accute angles on the profile view unless they are in a detail like the points on the front of the ship.

Maby it's not place to ask but where I could find totorial or any help how to texture fighters. You know texture it with a singe texture like all fighters in FS2.
-
Check my FAQ for the ship creation guide. There's a lith tutorial in that.

That looks a lot better.
-
It might be too late now, but I want that version that has the indented sections onteh bow/top hull...
[email protected] please I will throw it into the fs2 collection...
-
Nope. Not too late...in fact I already sent two earlier versions of the model to you.
Current incarnation of what I'm now calling the GTCv Akula, complete with crappy turrets by yours truly.

Two-parters are going to be some kind of light flak, the ugly-looking bumps torpedo launchers of some sort. I may or may not yet add some AAAf beams to the sides to keep fighters honest.
-
Now it really looks like Warlock from TBP ;) You just need two heavy partical beams in front :D
And for real it looks good. It just need some firepower in front.
Will it be more anticap or antifighter? Or in both ways?
-
Work some more on the bottom part.
-
Headin' in the right direction
