Oh, many of the scientific and tech programs that Hitler initiated were positive.  The Autobahn, for example, is how a highway system should be.  I heard somewhere that the German government spends something like 3/4 of a million dollars per mile for maintenance purposes.  The Interstate system here in the states, by contrast, is a joke and is in poorer condition in many areas than the byways it was supposed to replace.

However, the good things Hitler did cannot be divorced from the fact that he and his pogroms against the Jews, and indeed anyone who opposed him, rank as the single most horrific atrocity of the last several hundred years of human history at least.

The Volkswagen didn't turn out to be so bad either.

Hmm. That thread title was a bit startling, considering today's date. :blah:

Concerning the highways - or Autobahnen, if you prefer my native term: the situation in London must be really bad, if you consider or roads a blessing. ;) The regular and everyday traffic jams around Cologne already drive me mad. A lot of money is spent on maintenance, that's true - but the results are construction sites everywhere. :ick: There's a very interesting read on the Autobahn in the Wiki.

BTW, concerning the Beetle - Disney's making a new Herbie movie. ;)

Let me explain in some way.  The motorway round London is a big circle called the M25.  Now somebody failed to do the math when they worked it out - There are 9 x 6 lane motorways, and 13 x 4 lane normal roads connected to it.  That's a total of 106 lanes.  The M25 has 8 lanes, not 20, not 12, friggin 8!  So even if you assume 75% of people don't go round it (which is a big assumption) that still means you should hav 26 lanes to cope with the traffic....

OK, part two: If you want to go East, West, or North out of London, then you have a fair chance of picking up a decent-ish road, but going South - forget it - it's just crap!  Well, done ranting for now, I'm just looking forward to spending another 1 - 1 1/2 hours to travel 18 miles tonight....:hopping:

What does that topic about road building program have to do with that?

Going by your logic the Volkswagen is evil because the Nazis invented it.

With a title thread like that, i bet a lot of people start grinding their teeth and sharpenning their claws before entering.
And then they start reading, and they have to vent their anger over the Volkswagen...

Oh, and that reminds me. Hitler was a lot of things, but at least he had a good eye for automobiles. Have you seen Ferdinand Porche“s initial version of the VW? Talk about fugly!

It was coincidental - I thought of it last night, but posted today, so bad timing huh?

And Porsche didn't really get much right til the 50's imho, then the style started to kick in...

The new style Beetles are pretty nice apart from having no room in the back seats.

Clave, give it a rest on the M25.  I-285 isn't a peach to deal with here in Georgia, either, but this one was a little out of line...

I don't think Clave meant anything by it, Hitler did instigate an massive road-building campaign.

I live about 30metres from the M25, right up near Junction 26, which is being repaired at the moment, and I agree with Clave, it is probably the worst designed road in Europe.

As for the title thing, maybe one of the Admins can change the title to 'M25' or something if people are feeling it's badly worded?

Cars Drivers are not Crminals. We just get treated like it.

And on top of all that, everyone drives on the wrong side of the road. Nuts, I say, NUTS!

You think that's idiotic? I point to the M25/A21 junction as the greatest example of human stupidity ever. The road designers decided that having the 3 lane bound to be overcrowded M25 narrow down to two lanes westbound and one lane eastbound was a good idea. Surely everyone can see the error in this theory without even needed to study civil engineering.

Well, I'd say that all road like this, that let you go 'round a big city, are ****ed up. We've got one here, which circle Paris, and it's a friggin nightmare to use it. :hopping:

If your talking roads nothing is as bad as I-95 from Virginia to Maryland.  Some genius engineer decided to take the most crowded interstate around one of the most crowded cities and bring it from 8 lanes to two.  One each way.  Needles to say rush hour takes 4 to 8 hours
