Title: Parkan II (Space Sims is not really dead)
Post by: MetalDestroyer on January 27, 2005, 04:14:51 pm
I found recently this game into a forum.
Here the link to the official Website :  http://www.parkan.ru/p2en/

It looks like to an Battlecruiser Millenium because of a mix between Space sim and First Person Shooter.
But graphically it is better than BC and Parkan II propose a huge system (average 500 planets).

Russian are cool guys, they like Space sims, there come afew ones out every year. They are not Troglodytes like most Europeans and Americans that crave for the next generic shooter XXVIII.

I doubt it'll released over here, just as most other recent russian space sims.

MatthewPapa --> I don't think Parkan II will look like to X². Combat in Parkan II in this Video are well done, it isn't as boring like X².

That's kinda spiffy, they have space and ground based combat in the same game with the same engine(presumably).  Looks interesting.

Nice... It sounds like UC on steroids. Although the screenshots from the space component don't look that apealing.

Need to watch it develop, thanks for the link.

I suppose what I'm looking for in a Space Sim is, more or less, what SCP is becoming.

I can't help feeling that with games like this, rather than bolt on an FPS to widen the appeal, they should have put a lot more effort in the space combat side of things, It's frustrating since modern graphics cards have so much potential in this genre.

You know Flipside, I agree. Despite the wealth of alternatives coming out, after all these years, the only thing I still really want is FS - and with all the advances SCP is making, it's speedily becoming very much more like the thing we all wished it would be.

You say only because the stories have been mind-numbing, controls like a brick, and no one has actually suceeded in duplicating beams, much less improving on them.

Why the hell are you insulting Americans and Europeans in a thread about some Russian space game? :p That's just retarded.

Anyway, it looks pretty neat :)

Would you like it more if I just insulted Americans?:p

And the sales numbers agree with me.:p

So...you're saying that all Americans and Europeans are basically idiots because they prefer shooters over space sims?

Face it: Space sims cater to a niche crowd. Unless your country is filled with sci-fi nerds, I bet it's the same way.

And everyone knows Russia is filled with sci-fi nerds anyway, so that's why they still make the sims :D

In general he's correct. A large percentage of the gaming population in the UK and America only want FPS, Sports sims and driving games. I wouldn't say that all of the people in those countries are troglodytes but a fair percentage are.

Karajorma --> it's not only in UK and US, it's the same in general.
All want FPS i don't know why.

I seem to recall THIS very conversation already happened 1-2 years ago.

Deja-vuhhh!! Someone hacked the Matrix.

Anyway - it's not that gamers became troglodytes, it's that troglodytes became gamers too, and the developers aim for the lowest common denomiator.

Y'know, space sims aren't all that different from FPS' anyway..........

My complaint isn't about the ease of the game or anything. My complaint is about the fact that most people only play certain types of game. By the time you own 10 different FPS is there really any point in buying yet another instead of trying another genre?
