Title: Some anime questions...
Post by: Liberator on January 30, 2005, 02:47:19 am
Okay, Adult Swim recently updated their lineup, bolstering Inu Yasha with Fullmetal Alchemist and GitS:Stand Alone Complex(which ranks as having the single coolest intro AMV ev4r, "Inner World" rocks)

Now I have some questions and comments.

1)Is it just me or is FMA very dark despite it's misleading bright and cheerful animation style?

2)As a GitS n00b I am confused, does everyone above a certain age have a cyber-brain/artificial body?

3)I realize "the Major" is the character from the movie(which I haven't seen), but I thought she was a full android that gained consciousness not a human put into a robot body due to massive injury/illness?

1) FMA is very dark and sad at times, although there are cheerful moments.
2) It's an age where cyberbrains and artificial bodies are just as common as cars are today. Those who can afford it, have them.
3) I think it was in the second season of GitS: SAC where it was referred how the Major got her cyborg body. It was not said in the story that the kid was the major but I am quite sure she was. Anyway, I won't tell you about that because you obviously aren't that far yet. She is just as much a human as Batou is.

In reference to #3, the Tatchikoma(s)(sp?) are my favorite characters.  Something about a mecha with heavy(ish) firepower and stealth combat options with the personality of an 5-6 year old who's extremely eager to please and charming...their cute.

fury got them all correct. fma is dark as, err, coal. heck, two words: shou tucker.

oh, yeah, and most people in gits have cyberbrains. some doesn't for various reasons - which makes them somewhat immune against the laughing man, iirc.

and the major was human once, yeah. there's some backstory on it in an episode. I suspect somewhat that the boy in it has something to do with the particularist eleven or whatever they were called.

Nah, Kusanagi has aways been a cyborg, in any version of GitS.
Regardless, the things you'd see in the movies ( there's two ) have no relevance, SAC and 2nd GiG happen in an alternative universe where the major never met the puppet master. The mangas are in their own timeline too, the first movie is loosly based on it, and the second movie is a sequel to that first movie, even tho it's been made y the studio that makes the two TV series.
Final point, Innocense ( the second movie ) focusses on Batou, not the major.
And, Kode: I don't think the boy is related in any way to the particularist eleven: it's an "individual episode" ;)

1. who is Kode?
2. frankly, the difference between the two kinds of episodes are a lot fuzzier in season 2.

Well, it's dividual when there's a some kind of link to the main plot, like the episode about the kid. You can assume there's no link at all if it's an individual episode.

and, well, kode, that's you, no? :p

1) FMA has its humorous moments, but it becomes VERY dark and even disturbing in times, especially towards the end.  I've seen the entire series fansubbed, and without giving anything away, I will tell you that it is nothing short of amazing, and the ending will totally blow you away.  It's one of my favorite series of all time.

On top of that, there's FMA movie coming sometime next summer which should properly end the series.

I just think alot of it is just stupid. I'll watch Family Guy, The Simpsons, Futurama, and South Park over any anime show.

That's quite a bizarre statement, since anime is just another medium, not exactly a specific genre. To hate an anime show because it's anime is like hating Earth because it's a planet.

I don't like the way it is drawn, the cruddy voiceovers, or the story lines of the shows.

The FMA ending pisses me off for some reason. I can't quite place it, but it really annoys me. Loved the rest of the series to death, but the ending made me go "GAH!" when I watched it the first time.

we're just comeing up to the eppisode were ed and mustang fight, I know that a rather nasty eppisode is comeing up before too long, invloveing the philosipher's stone and mass genocide. I'm trying to act like I don't know it's comeing, but I peaked, I'm weak.

Again, saying all anime has cruddy voiceovers and storylines is like saying the same thing about all American films. As far as voiceovers go, yes, a lot of them do have crappy English dubbing, but if you look at a lot of (filmed) foreign movies with English dubbing, you'll probably find it's not much better. And about storylines and drawing style, I guess that's just a taste thing. But there is anime out there with storylines that wouldn't feel at all out of place in a normal American film.

You've got a ways to wait, IIRC, if you're talking about the one with Scar...

I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to Anaz, but that eppisode was defenately a nasty little bit of work.

I think it is the eppisode after the one after the one we are seeing next, that is going to be one you don't want to miss.

So, you've seen the dozen of thousand animes that exist, with all their different plots, arts and whatnot? Man, you're so... Ace.

"I don't like the way it is drawn"
specificly what, there are so many diferent styles if you like any animation there is an anime that you would like in terms of drawing is concerned.

"the cruddy voiceovers"
then get the subtitled version, these are foren shows, they were made for a language that is totaly ass backwards to ours there are some that are good, but yes as with anything not made in english origonaly most of it is... not... very good.

"or the story lines of the shows"
now this I find hard to beleive, it's like saying you don't like anything on television becase of the stories, there is more tan one anime, I gerontee you that what ever the story was of the one you saw there is one that has everything exactly the opposite, though yes there are some common themes, like everything in the world no matter what the time frame centering around Japan, there is a prety good reason for this, you can probly figure out why this is on your own.

so what do you like, give me some example of something you consiter good entertainment.

and it has good voiceovers.

Does the show intersect with the movie at all?  I've seen the OVA and some of the show, but I never really got either one.

Hey, that's not true, if you disregard all the sci fi or the fantasy stuff, there's quite a load of animes not centered at all around Japan, let's see, for exemple, a totaly random choice: Noir, it happens in France :p

Read or Die is centered on the UK. As a side note, I'm waiting for the opening theme of Full Metal Alchemist to change to Rewrite by Asian Kung Fu Generation.....

I have to be honest:  for a while, I felt the same way as Triple Ace.  I intensely disliked anime; I thought the general animation style was crude and too stylistic and the storylines were just plain...weird.  To me, animation was meant for children's cartoons; it was Looney Tunes or nothing. :p However, after getting exposed to a few series on Adult Swim, I've come to appreciate some of them, mainly for the complex storylines and the actual emotional attachment you feel to some of the characters.  A few of the ones that caught my interest were the original .hack, Big O, the recent Wolf's Rain, Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy Bebop, among others; in certain ways, all of these somewhat appealed to me.  There are many shows out there that I still despise, like the merchandise-themed ones and Dragonball Z (what is with that, anyway? :p), but some others have begun to grow on me.  The one thing that frustrates me, though, is the insistence on continuous storylines; most of the time, I'm completely lost as to what's going on plot-wise, and I feel like I'd have to view every single episode to catch up, which is frustrating.  I keep watching, though, if for no other reason than because I'd like to learn more.

A lot of Inu Yasha(my favorite show right now) are just random adventures but they usually have bits that tie into the 3 or 4 running long term arcs(Naraku, Inu Yasha/Kagome/Kikyo, Sango/Miroku, the slow but inexorable transformation of the great lord Sesshomaru(hands down my favorite character in the whole show) from a cold, merciless villian with little to no respect for anyone weaker than him to a cold, merciless with something of a heart who protects(though he'll never admit it) a small human girl named Rin who follows him for some reason(most likely cause he doesn't care if she talks too much and the fact that her family was killed by raiders)

DBZ isn't bad if you don't expect anything more out of it than just insainly overpowered fireball of doom humor.

girl: "what do you mean, 'energy'?"
small boy: "it's like this"
/*without looking, extends hand behind himself and obliterates a 30 foot tall rock without so much as blinking*/

That scene wasn't a girl and a small boy, that was Gohan teaching Videl how to fly after  she found out he was Saiya Man.

I didn't mind the earlier episodes of DB and DBZ, but its stupidity increased exponentially after the whole Freeza thing.
