I got White2 for my birthday. Which was yesterday. :p
As for your thread, I think I did post one or two things, but you listed a lot of stuff I already had, so I didn't have much to contribute. I'm very much a trad. metal person most of the time, so I don't have much DM or BM (I don't actually like DM most of the time - the usual grunty throaty vocals aren't my thing).
Ironsword - The Return of the Warrior (from the album of the same name. Portugese heavy metal! :D)
Dragonforce - Fields of Despair (Woo! 300bpm power metal! Great stuff...)
-
vangelis- across the mountains and then
Nightwish-nemo
-
Mayhem-Freezing Moon
-
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
-
Snow Patrol - Run
This song is badass.
-

Really? Which era of U2?
-
dunno. but its kinda odd to mix U2 and death metal.
-
Radiohead - Nice Dream
-
<---Been listening to the 30 second teaser for Nine Inch Nails' new album for the past 3 hours non stop.
I admit to being a little excited.

Now- Metallica - Justice For All
Next - Eye of the Beholder
After that - One
Last - Shortest Straw (my fave)
-
Winamp's going round between "Gently", and "Drown in a natural light", by Biffy Clyro. Both B sides from the single out today, so they are pretty new to me, considering how much i've listened to the other stuff by my favourite band - and thats exciting.

Isis? I've heard an awful lot of good things about them, but I get the impressions they play sort of hardcore-type stuff. Which I hate with a passion. Can you enlighten me?
Killing Joke - Asteroids
-
Isis are awsome, sort of tripped out space rock, they are a lot like neurosis and that sort of band, average song length is about 8-9 minutes, almost prog rock but not quite.

Shamefully, I haven't heard Neurosis either. They're on my "to-get" list, but I never seem to get around to it. That sounds like something I'd like, so I'll get that sorted asap.

I'm currently listening to Liam and Me (http://www.liamandme.com/) - Don't Say A Word (http://www.liamandme.com/Media/Mp3s/LiamandMe_-_Dont_Say_A_Word.mp3). They're friends of friends of my girlfriend but they're actually pretty good :)
-
Interpol - PDA
-
Motorhead - Keys to the Kingdom (from the Inferno album)
This song has a beautiful little solo on it. Quite unlike the usual screaming Phil Campbell solo - it took me entirely by surprise first time I heard it.
-
Agnus Dei, the choir adaptation of Adagio for Strings in Gm by Samuel Barber.
If they ever make an album of 'Music to Kill Yourself to' this'll be in it ;)
-
Oooh, that actually sounds very good - I'll have to see if I can find it...
-
Yamiyo no Prologue - Kajiura Yuki (Mai Hime OST1)
-
The Hidden Hand - Half Mast (from the album Mother Teacher Destroyer)
Psychedelic doom rock. Awesome. And great for waking yourself up when played rather loudly...
Oops, it's gone onto the next track - Desensitized.
Mmmm, heavy..... *salivates*
-
Twisted Sister - We're not gonna take it :nervous: *hits next*

thats the prauge philharmonic. dimmu uses alot of symphony backings in there music, last 3 albums in particular. none the less you should check out the video, it even has boobs :D also try something off "spiritual black dimentions", or "puritanical euphoric misanthropia", the latter really ****ing rocks.
-
i actually saw the video, which prompted me to download it. its a bit different than the other Dimmu song i have (i don't really care for it all that much, its called "For the World to Dictate Our Death", or something like that) i got it on a Nuclear Blast Demo CD when i orded a bunch of rare Iced Earth stuff from CM back in June (since i couldn't find it anywhere, especially the Europe-only 3CD version Alive In Athens). Oddly enough on the subject of Iced Earth: The Prague Philharmonic also recorded the Gettysburg song with IE.
Currently listening to Iced Earth - Wolf (Rick Christy is a madman on drums). Rats the song ended. now playing Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction.
-
i didnt like death cult armageddon as much as i liked puritanical, every song on that album kicks ass.
-
Ironsword - War Hymn
-
Third Eye Blind. Their first album.
-
Overlorde - Trapped by Magic
-
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
Next:
Three Days Grace - I Hate Everything About You

Fallout Boy
Straylight Run
-
Straylight Run is damn good. Existentialism on Prom Night is awesome.
Listening to that and Fastball's album "All the Pain Money Can Buy" in addition to my 3EB now.
-
Eyehategod-Serving Time in the Middle of Nowhere
-
Megadeth - Blackmail the Universe (from The System Has Failed)
I actually quite like this new album of theirs - true, it's not up to the standard of Rust In Peace or Countdown..., but it's vastly better than the last few albums. Some very good songs on it...
-
i wasnt planning on checking out megadeth's new cd, but i think i will now.
Lamented Souls-Essence of Wounds
-
yea its rather well executed. Blackmail the Universe and Kick the Chair are heavy as ****, even more so since its played in standard tuning. The album sorta falls off after Back in the Day, though.
Sepultura - Dead Embryonic Cells
-
Rolf Harris - Stairway to Heaven
-
Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness (from the album of the same name)
I might have to get this album - got the track on this month's Terrorizer cover cd, and it's really good....
-
Dragonlord - Rapture
basically Dragonlord is a black-metal side project that is basically Testament without Chuck Billy and with a keyboardist. Kinda wierd sounding.
-
my choir singing Jabberwocky
we kick so much ass
-
Satyricon-Into the Mighty Forest
-
Extreme - Get the Funk Out (from the album Extreme II: Pornograffiti)
-
Highway To Hell - ACDC
-
Nightwish- Wish I Had An Angel
-
Juda Priest - Grinder
EDIT: Ooh, I've got to get the new album as well - supposed to be very good.
-
i was thinking about getting the new Priest album, but the only one i have is painkiller, so i think i should pick up the majority of the back-catalog (SWoD, British Steel, SfV, etc)
In Flames - Zombie Inc.
-
Kansas - Carry on Wayward Son
-
Biffy Clyro - Wave Upon Wave Upon Wave
Cool title, great song.

Yes I can't stand grunge-type music....
Grunge.... Grrr... They truly killed off the last of the classic metal.
I've had Orion on repeat for the last 40 mins or so. Can't get enough of this song! It's nice fredding music, though.
-
It didn't by any means - just pushed it underground - but it means that the pop scene is now filled with "angsty" teenage wannabe rebels who churn out awful pop-punk and noo-metal and get rich off it.
Iced Earth - Gettysburg 1863
I ****in' love this song. I'd love to hear Matt Barlow sing this, but Tim Owens does it brilliantly as well. Completely OTT, of course, but it's fantastic...
-
Yeah, but it's definatley past it's heydey. Some bands like Metallica converted to nu-metal to keep up with the times, and some other bands like Def Leppard just fizzled out slowly. The true classic metal bands keep their identity today but there are far too few of them, and like you said, they get no publicity and are forced underground to make room for MTV garbage. Although I must admit that I can't complain too much about Beyonce's videos! ;7 Although it seems today that the music industry is more about image and popularity than it is about actual music. Just look at MTV! They have far more 'reality' shows than actual music related shows. It used to actually show music videos once and a while but now it's become a pop-culture overglossed circus.
-
I have to disagree - metal is enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment. You've got bands like In Flames, Killswitch Engage etc. selling lots of records, a recent revival and evolution of black metal (Darkthrone are as strong as ever, Enslaved's new album ISA is a f*cking masterpiece, and bands like Xasthur and Anaal Nathrakh are taking the genre forward in other ways), and NWOBHM is going strong, with Maiden and Priest releasing their best albums for 15 years or more, and underground "trad" metal bands like Overlorde, Brocas Helm and Slough Feg are producing fantastic records. Thrash is doing well - last year had very good albums from Kreator, Death Angel and others - and death metal should have a good time this year, with the new Nile record and a cracking new one from Immolation.
I personally don't want metal in the charts. It cheapens it, exposes it to commercial interests (which invariably results in crap music) and makes it subject to trends and fashions, which is also bad. (just look at what fame did to the Darkness. They slogged away on the pub circuit for years, building up their reputation, then a big label comes along, pastes them all over the media, and turned them into a fashion accessory. They'll never get their cult status back now...) Darkthrone were nominated for a Grammy (or some award like that) recently, and they told the people running it to f*ck off - they don't want anything to do with the mainstream. Music should be made for the music, not to fill some corporate dickhead's pockets.
As for Metallica, I haven't written them off. Yes, St. Anger was crap, but go and watch "Some Kind of Monster" and see what they were going through when they made it - that'll give you some idea of why it sounds like it does. Their next album will be the one to watch, IMO.
Fall of the Leafe - Big Ol' Fat Rain Inside
Phreak - did you get this album yet? Wotcha think of it?

Strictly speaking, Grunge was very very little to do with classic metal, it's never 'really' been mainstream If anything, Pearl Jam and Nirvana were 'fake' grunge, and STP and Mother Love Bone were far more along the 'original' style of grunge, (MLB was more or less the Daddy of them). 'Grunge' was more along the lines of Jazz-Rock than the Punk styles of Nirvana etc.
I suppose if I had to name what I thought severely damaged the Rock market almost to the point where it wasn't taken seriously, it could be summed up in 2 words : Bon Jovi.
-
Screw you ***** Bon Jovi rock. :hopping:
-
I've seen them twice myself, the music they do isn't bad, and at least they play their own instruments, except for the Bass Player, but people automatically thought that anyone with a leather jacket with 'Slayer' on it, must naturally be a Bon Jovi fan as well. You wouldn't believe how many 'classic' rock-fans stopped wearing leather jackets etc for that exact reason ;)
Edit :-
Everybody!
It's just a step to the left....
And then a jump to the right....
You put your hands on your hips....

holy ****, this megadeth cd rox. sounds like theve been inspired by some black metal, theres a few elements there that familiar to me that ive never heard in megadeth before. and i see theire hate metallica attitude still exists here :D and if they keep up with what they are doing i see them finally standing victorious over daves eldrich nemesis. indeed i find it ironic how metallica is in defence of intellectual property rights, even after they got famous on dave's riffs (the reason metallica's first 3 albums rock), which they used even after they were told not to. now you know why i dont like metallica anymore.
-
You're talking about the new one, yeah? It does have some great tracks on it. As for the black metal thing, there was a great interview with Dave Mustaine in a magazine a little while back, and he said that he dug black metal guitarists. Which is good. :D
Ironically, though, Mustaine has been saying that Megadeth won't be making any more records, even though the new one is the best thing he's done for ten years. I'm going to see them live at the Download festival (at Donington Park) in June - should be great!
As for the whole feud with Metallica, I personally think it's rather childish on both sides. I suppose that's what you can expect when you have a clash of such giant egos, but still, I hope they'll eventually make up, if only so they play together again (I want to see them pull a Maiden and make one of their best ever albums 20 years into their career ;)). I'm looking forward to seeing the therapy session with Mustaine in Some Kind of Monster. It seems to be the key to the latest round of insults (Mustaine didn't want it to be included in the final cut, but it was put in anyway), as Mustaine thought it made him look bad, but other people don't seem to think so...
Metallica themselves still have potential, IMO - I think they now realise what a joke they've become, so they'll try to redeem themselves with their next record.
EDIT: Oh, and Megadeth - Kick the Chair :D

now there's an idea. But the odd thing is that for all the metal i listen to i can only compose music that sounds good only on acoustic/non-distorted-electric guitars. Its like this horrible paradox of mine that i can't escape.
-
Phreak: I hadn't heard that. That's cool.
Iron Maiden - Face in the Sand (gotta love the kickdrums on this)
EDIT: About the can't-compose-metal thing - what do you end up with usually? Are you aiming for a jaggedy thrash/death riff, or something more melodic? Cos I find melodies horribly difficult to do, but I can knock riffs out fairly easily (whether they're any good is another matter).
-
basically it ends up as really wacky chord progression that only sounds good on acoustic guitars. Its only going to be that way since i can't solo for crap. I think the problem is that i tend to write stuff with my amp off at 2am since i don't want to wake anyone. For some reason its my creative peak time.
-
Ahh - that might have something to do with it... have you tried using headphones (if your amp has a jack for it)? Then you can make as much racket as you want and nobody will know :D You could try restricting yourself to one scale, or a particular group of notes, and seeing what you can come up with just using that...?
Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness (album of the same name)
My god this is good. Irish folk-tinged black/pagan metal. I think the word "bleak" best describes the sound. Imagine standing on a moor at dusk in the pissing rain, and that's what it sounds like... :shaking:

yea i have, the cord gets in the way sometimes. and what i have created sounds like a mid-tempo riff that sounds straight out of Slayer's Spill the Blood. I'll get together with a few friends over spring break and see what we can do.
On another note for festivals, Iron Maiden is rumo(u)red to be playing Ozzfest this year along with Sabbath, BLS, and possibly Megadeth and Anthrax
Slayer - Postmortem/Raining Blood

Primordial-The Heretics Age
damn this **** is dark, keep suggesting music pyro :D

Glad you like it! :D I got their new one (Gathering Wilderness) in the post today, and it's been played through about 5 times already. I bought it on the strength of the review and interview in a magazine, and I must say I'm mighty impressed with it. It is really grim, isn't it? If you want another suggestion, I'd definitely say get the new Enslaved album (ISA) if you haven't already. I have it on limited edition double vinyl :drevil: It's brilliant.
It's kind of weird, actually. I've only started listening to this kind of stuff (black/pagan metal etc) in the last few months. I never liked it before, but now I can't get enough of it!
As for festivals, Maiden are apparently going to headline the Reading and Leeds festival in August over here, which should be awesome. They headlined it in 1982 on the Number of the Beast tour as well :D Ozzfest is going to be "hosted" by the Download festival in the UK, so it'll have Sabbath, Megadeth, System of a Down, etc. there. Looks to be very good. Of course, all this means I won't be going on holiday this year, as all my money's going on the tickets

Victor Griffin (formerly of Pentagram)'s most recent band. They split up a month or so ago, but they were very good. This album features Scott "Wino" Weinrich on vocals and guitar (including a blistering solo). Good stuff.

At the moment, nothing at all, because I'm entirely deaf. :D Went to a rather good gig at the Camden Underworld last night. Brocas Helm (ok trad metal band from San Fransisco), supported by Reverend Bizarre (awesome doom metal band from Finland), Ironsword (fantastic old-school metal from Portugal. They're the reason I went to the gig), Ironheart (another old-school metal band. Quite Maiden-ish, really good. They only played 4 songs, but it was all good. Also very funny watching six middle-aged guys - 3 guitarists! - jump around on a 3-metre by 3-metre stage. Need to buy their stuff now...). The opening band was also pretty good - a female-fronted doom band. I didn't catch their name, unfortunately, but I'll look it up.

Led Zeppelin - Black Dog

Breaking Benjamin - Follow Me.

Susperia-Blood On My Hands
hey pyro, know any other doom metal bands with a female lead. i got a black lodge cd and while its not 100% fem vocals (more 40% fem 60% death) but its enough to get me intrested. i alredy like alot the fem lead goth bands. as for fem goth bands check out leaves' eyes, eessentially liv kristine with atrocity. its about 90% fem with 10% death backing. i uploaded a torrent at metal-torrents.com if yr intrested.
-
Pyro: you may want to check out Orphaned Land. They're like those folk-metal bands that are coming out of Scandinavia, but they're Israeli, so everything is middle-eastern styled. CM has a sample track off their latest album

Nevermore - Final Product. Newest from them, theres an MP3 of it on century media's website. It has a sort of death metal vibe (especially that part 2 minutes or so in, i don't know what kind of effect they use on the bass) with Warrel Dane using his high-pitched voice ala Halford/Diamond (I really should get mercyful fate)

Thomas Tallis probably the biggest name in Renaissance choral music, so you can find him at any store with a real classical section. And "Spem in alium" is one of his most famous works, so it's in a lot of collections. It's got that quintessential English bittersweet sound to it.
-
I'll put it on my list. Cheers. :)
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Possibly one of the best solos ever on this song....

Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness
The ghosts of our pasts are gathered at the borders of every nation, waiting to reign a terrible wrath upon us. Men's hearts are turning. Darker and darker as every day passes. Old Europe is changing, the world is changing. The wilderness is gathering it's children in, a terrible maelstrom is gathering. Can you see it? Do you know it? Where shall you stand?

Here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/026-0839931-8253226). ;)
I buy all my music. Because most of it is so obscure, I feel I should support the artists, as they're not going to be multi-millionaires for the most part. If I listened to crappy pop music, I'd probably download it.

Death - See Through Dreams
got Human the other day. pretty technical and crushing at the same time.

itis black metal (well sort of) they dont want to be supported. i find that all the re-releasing of old black metal albums recently is mostly by the lable and i very much doubt that the bands get any sort of cut. perhaps thats different for bands like primordial. as much as id like to support a band, i feel all im only supporting is the already fat wallets of the music industry.

Belle & Sebastian; If She Wants Me
I'm still trying to find a convertor to mp3-ize the singles album off cd, natch. Otherwise it'd be The Loneliness of the Middle Distance Runner or Judy is a Dickslap.
-
Megedeth - Hangar 18
This song is my fave just because the last 2 minutes totally ROXZORZ!!!

Enigma - Smell of Desire

That's not how it works, it simply lists the last 4 songs I've played.

 Gotta love those song titles...
Google for EAC (Exact Audio Copy) and LAME - they'll give you the best quality rips. :) Guide to using them is on ubernet.org - they might have the files for download as well.

Fair enough, I suppose. :) Most of these small labels don't make much money anyway, so their wallets are hardly "fat". I'd say the only "alternative" labels that are properly rich are Nuclear Blast and Century Media.
But besides that, I'd much rather have the album than a folder of mp3s. I want something tactile, with artwork and liner notes and stuff. Hell, I buy vinyl, and that went out of fashion at about the same time I was born..
Kappawing: Nice. Megadeth finished with Hangar 18 at Download. 'Twas awesome...
Dragonforce - Black Fire (This is power metal, but played at black metal speeds. Slightly daft, but good nonetheless. Their guitarists are ridiculously good...)
-
Stratovarius - Rebel

id go vinal if more record lables supported it. its still the best sounding recording media out there. if you take care of your records and change your needle alot they can last a hundred years. i converted old records to cds for my grandparents. i was rather impressed at the sound quality on theese things on an old record player that hadnt been used in years. converting them to digital just kills em. you can get alot of black metal on vinal, which is good, but theese days it costs more than a cd. i would buy music when the industry pulls its head out of its ass, offer records, tapes, cds, mp3s, hell even 8 track, and returns prices to where they once were before they hiked the price (they used the advent of the cd to do this). i find it ironic that digital media backfired on them, by making music easyer to rip to other more pirateable formats.

Geneva; Rockets over California
Best described as an apocalyptic Christmas hymn......
-
Cat Stevens - Lady D'ibonville (or something like that)
This is quite a sick necrophillic song, if you take it literally.
Anyway, It's typical Bush Administration policy not to let anyone with a name like Yusuf Islam into my country. I suppose the so-called "government intelligence" behind that was "Uhhh... If hiz name soundz liek a terorizt den he muzt be a terorizt! Duhhh!" It's really quite an embarrassing move by the Bush Administration, considering the fact that Cat/Yusuf has a spotless record and all he ever sang about was peace. That was probably it. One more anti war liberal out of the country is one step closer to the evangelisation of the nation, typical Bush mentality.
