Why couldn't :v: make a sequel to FS2 but call it a different name. A la Championship manager and Soccer/football manager when Eidos and Sports interactive split. It could be called Free all Space or something.
-
The IP's more complex on FS. You'd need to change the name and appearance of the aliens, the ships, the history etc.
-
Yeah, or give it away for free I suppose.

What Black Wolf said... copyright reasons.

Flame flame flame......
there now that i have properly flamed you......
i don't think i want anyone to make FS3. We have too much literary liscence with how to end the cliffhangar of FS2. Once the questions got answered, we would have to kill all of the mods with the exception of TBP, and start all over again, because none of the mods would be canon.
anyway....those are just my thoughts.

I never said I wanted a FreeSpace 3. I would only be interested in a Freespace 3 if it would have an open ending. If it gave final closure the community would be

alot of the mods are ending the FS saga according ot the vision of the creators of thoise same said mods. I am pretty sure that the boys at [V] didn't have anything like Origins in mind, or even Machina Terra, which is much more conventional. This doesn't mean that either one is wrong, just that they are the FS3 Vision according to Myself (Origins) and Styxx (Machina Terra). Inferno has a different vision, as do the 158th, BWO, a host of others.
FS3 would be the end of all of our mods that could conceivably be the Logical continuation of the story. All are different, yet all are logical. That is why i do not want to see FS3 made.
-
Again - maby [V] plans FS4 too, so maby FS3 wouldn't have a real, final ending.
-
You guys keep speaking as if some miraculous release of FS3 would end all of the hard work and imagination you put into your mods. While I myself am perfectly content knowing that this game will never come to pass (except for a slight twinge of regret at never knowing what *really* happened), I don't see why this would have to be true. Everyone would see your mods as an "alternate ending," your own interpretation of future events while completely disregarding the events of FS3. There were plenty of campaigns/mods made after FS1 describing future events, and some probably around the time of the FS2 story. They may be in direct contratdiction to FS2, but there's nothing wrong with that; people still play them. The same would be true for your mods.
-
Personally I don't see what's wrong with non-canon stuff like that. It's like an alternate way things could have happened. I have no problem with either an open ended or final FS3.
Edit: Yeah, basically what Mongoose said.
Although seeing Punisher, I have doubts that Volition could do a very good job of it. The damn thing looks about two years old.

The mods are not canon, so, even if FS3 was released, it wouldn't change a thing. Same could be said for the Awakenings or Aftermath mods for FS1, it's not like they are now worthless just because FS2 was released.
