Title: Constant crashes
Post by: Mooseman on January 31, 2005, 09:58:30 pm
Up until now FS-2, SCP has been working reasonably well. However now I can't get it going at all. I have 3.6 build launcher, with SCP from Game Warden. Usually with a reboot FS-2 has run all missions, until now. I just locks up my system. Which is only 2 weeks old and has all the latest and greatest in it. Anyone have any ideas how to fix it??

Try the debug build first. Post what it says if you are unconfident to continue.

Lock up in the middle of the mission loading which just crashes you back to desktop?

Try removing mv_music.vp from your main FS2 folder.

Or better... try one of the newest builds. :)

They don't fix the problem with mv_music.vp yet. The fix is on the way but no build has been released that fixes it AFAIK.

Thanks for the help!

I have checked the main folder and mv_music.vp isn't there. However I do have other .vp files: mv_adveffects.vp, mv_effects.vp, mv_loplanets.vp, mv_models.vp, mv_zpacks.vp. If I load the game raw without going through launcher 4 simply by clicking on fs_open_3_6.  It does seem to work OK. I do get a missing file error at the beginning and then the program works OK.
This is the error message>>
"missing briefing icon"  at top of the box "brief_parse_icon_tbl_error".

Again I can't stress enough how much I appreciate your help!
Thanks,

Bruce
Title: The freeze up happened again

This time I managed to get the error log on note pad:

fs2_open_3_6 caused an Access Violation in module fs2_open_3_6.exe at 001b:005d81da.

There is allot more this is just the start of it.

I've experienced pretty regular lockups myself with taylor's build from around the start of the year; it happens every 5-6 missions and during loading.  I haven't tried a different build, so it could just be that one.  It looks like you're still running 3.6, though; you'll definitely want to try 3.6.5, at least.

try a new exe, yours is a bit old

1. You want FS2_Open 3.6.5 or one of the latest builds released after that.

2. When did you last update the media.vp files you do have? At the same time as you got the 3.6 exe? Cause if you're running 3.6.5 vp files with the 3.6 exes I'm not surprised if you're getting crashes.
Also the media.vp files must be updated as a set. If you're running 3.6 and 3.6.5 vp files together you'll probably also get crashes.
Title: Here is the latest
Post by: Mooseman on February 03, 2005, 06:57:13 pm
So far I've stripped the FS2 directory right down to the bare bones .exe, launcher 5.2 and FS open 3_6_5. The game loads but the mission area brings it down again. Kicks me out of the program. I have installed the new *.vp files too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the latest note pad info:

fs2_open_3_6_5 caused an Access Violation in module fs2_open_3_6_5.exe at 001b:004326d4.
Exception handler called in Freespace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 2/3/2005 18:49:20.

1024 MBytes physical memory.

Thanks again,

Mooseman

PS:
I there any special area the "missions" need to be in? I have a suspicion that the program isn't finding Freespace2 mission area. That is where it is crashing now. I have finished the training missions only to be dumped by the actual mission load section.

[fs root]/[mod directory](optional)/data/missions/
or if they are in a .VP, put it into [fs root]/[mod directory](optional)/data/

I knew I forgot to warn you of something Mooseman. If you downloaded mv_music.vp rename it to mv_music.vpdisabled (to disable it :D )

If you downloaded the zPack you can't do that so download this (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/musicTBL.rar), extract it and put the music.tbl file in freespace2\data\tables\

BTW you didn't strip out the standard VP files did you? FS2 needs them. It's only the media.vp files that need to go. You should keep any of the following if you had them.

# root_fs2.vp
# sparky_fs2.vp
# sparky_hi_fs2.vp
# stu_fs2.vp
# tango1_fs2.vp
# tango2_fs2.vp
# tango3_fs2.vp
# smarty_fs2.vp
# warble_fs2.vp

Mooseman, did you install any new software recently? I didn't play FS2 for some time, and after I felt in the mood again, it didn't even launch. I've yet to try the various debug builds, but I have traced the problem to that new internet security (F-Secure) I have started using. Un-loaded that, and FS2 works again.

Maybe it's something similar.

Actually I did take the original .vp files out. Needless to say they are back in! At least I can fly single missions now.
However there is a little wierdness going on with the program. Some of the original missions work where as others don't. Nothing works through the campaign/mission launch deck.
I have tried putting some of the reference files in the main dir and still they aren't read by the .exe file.
Interesting, isn't it.
BTW the new build is really cool stuff. I like the 3D mod on the targeting radar scope! Almost like the real F-18s I've seen!!

Did you remove the music.vp file/add the music.tbl like I said? If you haven't done that you'll find that some missions fail while others work.

Another possible problem is the missing cruiser03x.pof problem. There's a fix for that one sticked at the top of the SCP forum.
Title: No
Post by: Mooseman on February 04, 2005, 02:20:31 pm
Actually I never did put in the the music.vp files. However since I replaced the music file and put it in the data/tables file area the music has changed. The main program still works... so far. I'm experimenting with the new .vp files that work with Launcher 5.2/build 3-6-5. Here is what I have left out so far: mv_loplant.vp, mv_core.vp, mv_effects.vp, and mv_models.vp. The others are in the main FS2 dir. I don't want to push my luck any further than that. Lets see if it works out.
Thanks, again Karajorma. Your help is invaluable!

If you have zPack you don't need any of the others.

Really, then should I strip them out or does it matter?

I think you should stick to zPack and the music.table I gave you. FS2 may act stangely if the order it finds files in is wrong.
Title: Do you know anything about...
Post by: Mooseman on February 05, 2005, 12:09:27 am
This might seem like a dumb question but, do you know anything about the mission where all the friendly ships need to get through the Vega Jump node before some Sun goes super- nova? I have done it 4 times now, three of them making it to light jump at the node only to be disallowed a continuing scenario. It always wants me to repeat the same mission. Is that a programming thang again? Or do I need to kill off more of the bad guys?

It just repeats it like that so you can get both endings.  Thats the end though.

You've completed the campaign :) I'm gussing you don't have the avi versions of the cutscenes and thus were unaware of that fact. :)

If so get yourself to Kosh's site (http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/fs2movies/) and download all three endpart avi files. Then play the mission again :)

After that you might as well download the rest of the cutscenes (including Bosch's limited explainations for his actions)

As usual you're a life (campaign) saver. Thanks again Karajorma.
The game can't end there. It seems there is so much more to be done!
I have ordered the re-released version of FS2 from England. 45 GBP, so it should interesting to see how many more missions are the original disks.

The cliffhanger ending of FS2 is one of the best aspects of the game. Cause no one knows what happened to Bosch, why the Shivans buggered about with Capella or a whole host of other questions it means that we all invent answers and then write campaigns based around them.
