Title: Help a Freespace lover out? My X-45 won't work!
Post by: Thilus on February 02, 2005, 02:34:00 am
I LOVE what you guys have done with FS2, I just spazzed a few days ago when I got the newest version of SCP, and it's glorious... infinitely better than the version I tried a few months ago. But, I'm having the same problem that's completely keeping me from playing this work of art... the new executable will not recognize my X-45 joystick at all!
Being the only joystick I have, this presents a major problem to me. The stick works just fine in stock FS2 (and FS1, for that matter), but will not do a damn thing when I run with the 3.6.5 launcher. The stick comes up in the joystick selection box, but when I'm in the game, not a single function on it responds. I've tried using the Force 0 and Force 1 options, but neither of them do anything either. And I know it's not the joystick drivers or profiling software... I use this thing every day, and it's set up fine.
I would HUGELY appreciate it if someone could look at this for me... or if there's any other X-45 users out there, tell me if your stick works, and if you had to do anything special with it.
This port looks absolutely amazing, but there's no way I can play it without my stick. Little help? Any response or suggestions would be great =)

While you're reading this, how the heck do I get the downloaded AVI movie files to work? Putting them in the executable directory does squat =P

i use an x-52 and it works fine. my guess would be you should try to run the original launcher. and configure the stick there. i think it needs to set up the right registry settings. once thats done run the fsopen launcher and configure the stick there as well. then it should work.

the launcher also has now options to force 1st or 2nd available controller (Windows device ID) If the X45 is your only controller you might try that as well if you have several others (racing wheel, joypad...) try to remove them and the stick being the first device.
Oh, and look up in the in-game options, I recall that 3.6.5. did make my throttle dissapear until I reentered the axis.

@Nuke: how do you find the axis response of the X52? I found the travel way too long and the spring much too wobbly, so I fitted a little collar underneath the handle so the spring gets into full compression - stronger spring shorter travel, but I am still unhappy with the responsivness of the stick, so I find my self grabbing for the mouse in dogfights, uh. My old x36, modded with twistaxis was much more acurate...

i like the lighter spring, it took a little bit of getting used to but i dont mind. i had an x36 as well, but it died last year. im used to not springloaded sticks. infact i removed the springs from my x-36 to make it easyer to fly choppers. id like to see a stick with adjustable springyness, my old sidewinder force feedback had it but it was kinda crapy. if they woulda spent 5 more munites coming up with features for the x-52 they would have thought to put a spring tension adjustor on the thing.

Odd. They should work check in the launcher>>Features>>List Type>>Troubleshooting that disable video playback isn't selected.

Try playing intro in Windows Media Player to see if you have the right codecs. You'll need divx (and XVid for the FS1 movies).

AFAIK movie code in 3.6.5 is broken.

That might explain it. In which case something from the recent builds forum is in order.

I'm not sure what did it exactly, but my stick is working now... I tried playing with the original launcher (thx for the tip Nuke!), and I also went into Game Controllers in control panel and made sure the stick was configured as the default device for legacy programs... the combination of those things made it work, and now I'm real happy. The new build, along with the latest VPs, is really breathtaking. Still no movies, but I'll be on the lookout for a new build that fixes that... thanks for letting me know that it's broken, Mr. Fury, or I'd still be trying to fix it.
Thanks for your responses all, I appreciate it a ton! ^_^

BTW, I'm thinking about getting an X-52 to replace my (already battered after just two years) X-45... do you really think the upgrade is worth it? Because it looks sexay as hell ;)

its a nice stick, but judging as no matter how good a control you get its life span will be short. its quite sad when your stick is worth more than your video card :D

Shouldn't be.  I fixed the only known issue (to my knowledge) just before 3.6.5 came out.  A more recent change the day or two before may have broken it again but I'm pretty sure that it at least worked in beta2 of 3.6.5.
