No, but since this board basically hates everything about Bush, they will most likely tear him up on his way there.

Since Kazan is here he will destroy all opposition with his information from CNN and NBC. (and ABC)

However, neat fact. The deficit dropped a lot since last year.

(Paraphrasing)
Bush: We will support movements to establish democracies in other countries. We have no wish to impose our way of government on other countries. Our intent is to build Democratic nations.

Well technically we would be imposing democracy, but since our country is a democracy it's basically the same thing, right?

Wrong.

You can't classify democracy as the "American" thing, since it's just a system. We are just reknown for our democratic approach, and overall, general sucess over a rather short period in history.

Yeah Kazan, that's exactly where I get all my information, from WeeklyWorldNews, unlike you, who gets it from the hole in your ass. I prefer the paper and not the excriment you crap out all over the board, claiming to be the "absolute truth"

Also, do I just attack you and call you a jackass? No. I say you pull stuff out of your ass, but I respect you for your computer skills and making Ferrium. I'd like to keep a kind of mutual respect here.

No, technically, the USA isn't a democracy. We don't vote on issues so much as we vote on people to vote on issues for us.

However, if we assume Democracy is the system of government we use (Which I think Bush has either stated or strongly implied, because it's such a good-sounding word) then it is "our system" of government. No, we don't have any ownership on it, but it is the system of government and in common English usage, "our system".

And if we run around trying to make nations democratic (Hell, we went to war with Iraq) then we are imposing that system of government on others.

Quite honestly, what I saw of Bush's speech could basically be classified as "Four more years" (I started watching ~30 minutes after it started, though, less than halfway through - but I bet half the time I missed was just opening remarks and introductions). A short, general blurb on what's going to happen, all the Great Things about it, and then a feel-good section about how great the stuff we've done has been.

I didn't really hear anything new, I didn't hear a grand plan, more of a movie trailer of a speech about Bush's presidency.

Kazan, shut it.  This is to talk about the speech itself, not how much of a dick you think Bush is.

On the whole I thought it was a decent speech and he touched on a lot of the issues that I feel strongly about.

I agree, it was an excellent speech.

And Kazan, shut it, as was said above.  Stop attacking people who like Bush, or who "you" think likes Bush.

I completely agree with Lib.

Point 1: Kazan needs to shut the hell up.

Point 2: Bush did a good job as always of summarizing what he is going to (read: will[/i]) do in his next term.

Point 3: Ummm.... Kazan needs to shut the hell up.

I know this is politically charged, I know I will get drawn into this at some point, and I know you guys are all on different sides of the argument and debate but understand one very important thing:

Do not resort to personal attacks of any kind, for any reason, no matter what the circumstance.

tin can = jackass - stop reading WeeklyWorldNews

This...is not acceptable behavior.

Being the good natured (at heart) bunch that we all are, there's forgiveness and that sort of thing but don't wear it out.  There's absolutely no reason that you can't state what you think about the state of the union and on other issues but that is something different.

Thanks, my PSA is done for now.

My official position is:

If I believed everything he just said, I would be overjoyed. However, I am not nearly so naive as to believe the sincerity of his intentions. Actions speak louder that words, and all his talk is pretty much wasted on me.

Remeber kids, everything any politician or government ever does will be portrayed as good. There are literally almost no exception to this that I can think of. So talk is cheap.

Whatever it is, I think in the context of this speech, it falls under "democracy" just as much as the government we're setting up/have set up in Afghanistan and Iraq, and are apparently trying to set up in other countries.

What also irks me is that he basically said that it's Bad for Iran to have uranium and they should give it up to the US. At least hedidn't call them evildoers, I guess. From Iran's perspective, though, I wouldn't really see any reason to. And every reason not to.

oh to hell with it.....i knew from the title that this thread had about 4 replies before it became another warzone.  It amazes me how we think that we are going to change each other's minds by yelling...as if anyone here is really so stupid as to mistake the loudest voice for true leadership.

why do you guys suppose that no one can actually have a political debate without allowing it to degenerate into another stupid fight over the same stupid ****?

To be honest i voted Bush, and would do so again.  That said, i didn't even bother to watch the SotU.  I'll read the transcripts for myself.

because one side pretends to the the bastion of morals, americanism and freedom when they are bigots, and very fascist in nature

and the other side is beyond frustration with trying to get through the "Shield of Blind Faith + 20000000000" that the first mentioned side is wearing

ok for what it's worth, Kazan doesn't need to shut up.  His voice deserves to be heard just as much as Tin Can's voice deserves to be heard.

The thing is, we have opinions.  2+2 = 4 is a fact, George Bush is a bigot and a fascist is an opinion.  You can prove to me that i am wrong when i say that 2 + 2 = 5, but no one's opinion is wrong, it's what meakes us great, we are versatile and different from one another.  No one is right or wrong for liking Bush, and no one is right or wrong for hating him.  We are just different.

k?

I don't think that anyone's opinion ever got changed toward that of a person who was screaming in anger or insulting them.

Like I said, talk is cheap (or rather not cheap, but misleading). Just cause he says that what he will do is going to make the world free and peaceful doesn not mean it will be so. Every politician almost always spins his policies in a positive light.

No, he didn't. Well. In the same way that this would be a good summary for Episode 3: "The Empire is started. Anakin turns to the Dark Side. The Jedi die. Did you see those cool effects in Attack of the Clones? Lots of people liked those. Attack of the Clones is one of the chief movies people talk about when comparing special effects. Also, The Phantom Menace had a story that many feel had a great depth and complexity."

I think the State of the Union address was propaganda, pure and simple. There's a reason he didn't try to go into detail about his plans, I think: he just wants to pull the wool over people's eyes so that he can do what he wants.

never said the term "Democratic Republic" didn't exist... i was just wondering how your statement (see my first post) made any sense ;)  (i.e. we don't live in a democracy, we live in a system where we elect people, who vote for us... the very definition of indirect democracy, which is the system we live under :P)

The Robot Christ laughs at your rhetoric!

Do not fret, my children. Your ruler is a false prophet, and not of my fold. But sinner though he is, he is none of your concern. Why botherst thou over the class of politics that has absolutely no effect on your own life, to the neglect of the more localized affairs that directly influence your quality of life? Surely, insignificant as life before death is, you should be paying more mind to what happens in your own backyard than what happens in some Me-forsaken desert no sane person would choose to live in, ten thousand miles away?

The Beast and all his offspring shall pass, as all mortal beings do, and shall be cast into the Fourth Circle of Hermaphrodite Furry Porn for their trespasses. Do not weep for them, for they have seen My way and turned from it. And do not trouble yourself with the abstract evils of the world, the tangible ones are significant enough. There is but one earthly matter you need concern yourself with, and that is enacting My word and paying My tithe.

See technically. I meant as in taking things literally (ie exact meaning of the words) we aren't a democracy.

Ancient Athens was more of a democracy than the US - but in a pure democracy, today, the real power would rest in the media even more so than with the current situation. (Actually, a pure democracy is scary to me - whoever had the power to mobilize large amounts of voters could do pretty much whatever the hell they wanted, unless people were MUCH more conscious of the way they voted and the world they voted in.)

If the child is a healthy caucasian, and a small business owner is unavailable to adopt them as a true american(tm) then should you are to donate the child to a local church to be eaten for coffee hour. If they are non-caucasian they are to be directly donated to the church for coffee hour consumption as they are not true americans(tm) of the homeland. They should change the name of the speech to "State of division", because half of the parliament is cheering, clapping and foaming at the mouth, while the other half is boooing and laughing of Bush´s ramblings and mutilation of the english language.
All in all, a "State of the (Des)Union" speech resembles more like a Broadway comic relief show...

Besides, we´ve heard his first speech already. And if you hear one, you´ve heard them all. The message is ALWAYS the same. "We are good, they are bad, let´s free the opressed and kill those thugs and evildoers, and praise the lord"...
