Title: SCP Trailer?
Post by: Axem on February 03, 2005, 09:54:32 pm
Not sure where this belongs, but it involves the SCP so why not post it here...

In December I wanted to make a trailer for FS2 with the SCP to show how far the game has come. I got 2 gigs of uncompressed video of various scenes, but my computer decided to want to need a format so it was all lost... All that got saved was this (http://www.mts.net/~jmsrmr/fortheloveofshiva.avi), which was supposed to be the final surprise scene until I thought it'd be too spoilerish.

Anyhow, the idea entered my head again and I have a vauge script for a theatrical style trailer using hashed together ingame dialogue. I'd just need video clips, however time isn't the best friend right now, so it might take me awhile. But, there's quite enough people around here, so I though I'd ask if anyone wants to help out with this. All people would need to do is run fraps while playing FS2_Open, compress it, and send it off to be edited and put into the final trailer.

So, good idea? Bad idea? Anyone want to help? Ideas to add? It's all still pretty open.

Clips Needed:

FS1 (Original Game):
Dogfighting Shivans
Battling Shivan Cap Ships
Good shot of the Lucifer in 'Endgame'

FS2 (Original Game):
Iceni jumping into subspace
Any NTF Related battles
Battling Shivans in the Nebula
Sathanas in the Nebula
More general dogfighting Shivans

FSOpen:
Anything from the FS2 Campaign. Anything at all. :D

MODs:
The goal is to get atleast 1 clip from as many large projects and campaigns as possible. The more the merrier. :)

Send the clips as divx-compressed avi's to narfing.gmail@com (switch the . and the @ around). Keep all attachments under 10MB, split them into parts if neccesary.

Have fun! :)

I've been thinking about this as well. Do you have a script of sorts? So far, all I've been able to think up of was a 'freespace chronicles' sort of thing, with scenes from the major and most important parts of Freespace 2, while a summary of the story is narrated out in words, followed by the few words at the very end saying to watch out for FS3. Its more of what I think would be a Fs3 trailer than an FS2 or SCP one either way :P

Still, I'll help in anyway possible. :D

It's sorta the way I was going to do it. I had to cut it down so it didn't tell the whole story so people would actually play it. But basically the dialogue goes up to around A Flaming Sword when the Sath comes out, then we go right into the gratuitous action scenes. ;)

that would be good too :D

Any clue as to what kind of dialogue you're going to put in? PM me if you dont want to say it out aloud :)

Should only canon ships and weapons be in those clips or does anything go?

Singh: I have a general idea what I want, but I think it still needs work. You got any IM programs? If not, I'll just PM you the ideas.

TrashMan: Stuff from the stock campaign preferred, but I'm thinking of including short clips of other large mods and campaigns at the end, stuff like Inferno or Derelict.

Show some port stuff as well.  Make it like one big cutscene

I have both Fraps and VirtualDub; tell me what you need and I'll be happy to record it. :D

P.S.  Is there any AVI compression format you would prefer, like Divx?

Xvid + Ogg -- in ogm or mkv.
This would also allow un-burned subtitles.

You cab encode into mkv or ogm using virtual dub mod.

Hmm.  Intro suggestion:

Scene from FS2 port, second to last mission.  Alpha 1 approaching the jump node, first showing just alpha one, with a snazzy "A game by volition and hard light productions appears" - and gets blown off the screen by the HoL destroyer jumping in.  Cut to A1 evading destroyer & jumping into node.

Show scenes of FSPort "Good Luck" and FS1 ending movie, with voice over from FS1 ending, lines edited to "In the Vasudan war, we learned how to survive...and so we did.  The Shivans are gone" cued to destruction of lucifer.  Fade to Alpha 1 & company viewing earth.  Fade to black with voiceover "I'm told we can expect them again".

Cut to next scene.

I'd suggest favoring in-game movies over cutscenes - they might look better, anyway, but it's also just cool to say "See that? All that was done with the game engine." ;)

Use lighty's backgrounds instead of the FS1 Finale, and just have the voiceover from the ending scene.

The plan is too use as little pre-rendered stuff as possible, so like WMCoolmon said, it's the game engine doing all the talking.

For now divx compressed avis would be fine. We can convert it into something else later if we need to.

We're almost done with the script and we've got a good idea what stuff we need.

The plan is to use ingame footatge from the original FS1, original FS2, FS_Open, and as much stuff from user made campaigns and mods as possible.

If people want to start recording stuff for random action scenes, go right ahead. I'll have a list of more specific scenes we need later.

If you've got something you want to send to me, PM me for my e-mail address (take that spam bots!). There's a 10MB attachment limit, so try to keep the movies under that.

Sorry for OT, but Axem, your gmail accounts allows bigger attachments.

If you want to use it... If it's a private account I could invite you. (Second 'official' account.)

Really? GMail's FAQ says 10MB Max. If that isn't the case, I wish to learn more. :)

Huh, I'm sure I had a pretty big attachment... Well, maybe I didn't recive, but sent it...

I think it's arbitrary on the recieving end, but limited to 10mb on the upload.  There aren't any web services that allow attachements that large, so the number of attachments that Google is looking at over that size is pretty minimal.

If you guys need FTP space, I can give you 50MB.

If you're serious about this, If you want to, just do the video and the speech and I'll do a more 'complete' version of the Freespace Music to go over it?

put in parts where it's like the 1997 re-release of star wars commericals, with the a screen showing old and new.

How about a scene showing an old school herc being blown about by bob's HTL one?

This'd require a bit of video editing, but how about showing an original version of a fighter in FS2 flying along, then as it gets close to the camera, morph it into the hi-poly SCPified version. (Using the new set-camera-position and set-camera-facing-object functions, say, SEXP a fighter to fly past, record it once with retail textures/model/effects and once with the SCP versions)

If that could be done with retail nebulas in the "before" part of the anim and LS's nebula in the "after part", that'd look bloody awesome. :D

I was also thinking something along the lines of that. :D

I've edited my first post with a list of clips needed. The general script is show shots from FS1 and 2, then quicky shift it into high gear with the SCP and user-made mods and other uber cool stuff.

kasperl: I'll keep that in mind. :)

Flipside: Excellent, now I don't have to talk you into it. ;)

If you need the space, be sure to PM me, I might not check this thread very often. If you guys can somehow work out a way to do something very computer-power intensive on a machine located half-way around the globe without the user of that machine having to do much but click a button, I'd be quite willing to let my main rig (AMD64 3k+, 1 GB DDR, R9800Pro) run a program for you guys.
