Well, I'm a novice modeler, but I've started this project a short while ago, and is still in progress. I'd gladly enter it in the contest... However, I'm not gonna rush it in time for a deadline. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Since this is my first "real" attempt at modeling, I'm taking the time to learn all the nuances of LW.
Anyways, here's some pics done about 4000 polygons ago: http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/aerodrome/766/Preliminary.htm (//"http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/aerodrome/766/Preliminary.htm")
Currently, I've added a few more center details, and some work on the aft engines. Still no bridge. I'm pretty suret he center detailing is done, still debating on one or two things. (center nav bridge is one, spicing up one or two boxes is a definate, but not much). Also debating on wether or not to angle the aft section inwards some (rotate the bottom inwards, so the aft section isn't just straight up and down. Also, I want to add 8 standard defence array turrets (to guard from raiders, but nothing in the offensive nature)
Anyways, all suggestions are DESPERATELY wanted. this model is designed in the B5 genre.

Looking good. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Don't worry, you have over a month to work on it.
-
Very nice. Looks like a very nice and futuristic space station if you didn't tell me that it was a capital ship.

Actually, it's a freighter (gasp!)

A very BIG freighter then. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Excellent job! I can't wait to see it completed. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

That's one hella big freighter...
But pretty B5ey. Sort of looks like one of those nice EA freighters.

Well, it is set in the B5 Genre. Again, originally, I designed it as a commercial large cargo vessel with a military contract as a repair/rearm vessel. About halfway through designing it, I noticed that there was already a Cotton Class Repair Tender ("http://www.b5tech.com/earthalliance/earthallianceshipsandvessels/earthcapships/cotton.htm") with almost the exact same design specs. Only difference between mine and that one, was mine doesn't "deploy" into a dry dock, but instead rely on a small manufacturing facility and raw materials.
I still have ALOT of detailing to do. Still need to come up with a bridge and a dockign bay. I'm still deciding on the bridge, but I'm starting tocome up with some ideas (finally).
What I'm debating on now, is to hollow out part of the underside and make the engines exposed but recessed. I need SOMETHING to break up the smooth bottom area. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) The engines need something more than just nozzles attached to the end. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) ANY suggestions?

Sensor equipment?
-
No, would be drowned out by the engine emissions.
Give it some sort of 'reator vessel', fuel tanks, tubing....junk like that.
-
Cool. It sort of reminds me of the ship from the cover of Hammer of God by Arthur C. Clarke...don't quite remember what it was called.

Hah... maybe I should go take a look at that book.. maybe it'll solve my "where to put the bridge" lull. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Well, I've kind of held back on modeling it so far, that bridge thing really has me stumped. If I don't find a solution soon, I'll just put windows on the front and call it a bridge. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) (taking off that little stump first though)
