Title: Identifying unknown file types?

Let's say... hypothetically... that I spent the last two weeks DLing a file. And for the purposes of this thread, let's assume it's completely legitamate, and legal. Mmmkay? ;)

And let's say it was listed as a rar file. But winrar say's it isn't.

Is there any program out there can tell me what kind of file it is? I suspect it may be an ISO, or a BIN or NRG, or something of the sort. But I don't know how to tell, and I don't want to lose all of the hypothetical time I may or may not have spent DLing this file.

Try (maybe) one of the multi-format extractors.  I think the filetype should be encoded in the header data within, so I reckon that one designed to handle multiple types could use that.

Other chance is that it's corrupted, so winRar doesn't recognise it because of that.  

Maybe you could just try renaming the extension and seeing what can open it, if you have an idea what it mihgt be.

It's a shot into the dark, but maybe Quick View (http://www.avantstar.com/intradoc-cgi/idc_cgi_isapi.dll?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&ssDocName=QuickViewPlusOverview) could be helpful. Haven't used that yet, but it sounds interesting.

I'm sure you can get some sort of proggy to identify filetypes...

Winrar is capable of opening ISO files (the fact that the extension is wrong is irrelevant) so scratch that. It is probly another CD image format since hmmm... you hypotetically downloaded a ''cough'' legitimate file... Anyways just try to mount the file on Daemon Tools: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/index.php

Also, try opening with WinAce. Winrar is sometimes picky.
And finnaly, try opening with Windows Media Player, or some other video player. Your "legitimate" file might turn out to be a "legitimate" porn movie.

I know how to do it in Linux. But windblows doesn't have a comparable feature. :p

Besides 'file' isn't the most precise program, at times... :doubt:

Nope. Didn't open it in Daemon tools... Bugger probably is a 600 meg porn movie. :doubt:

Actually I deleted it. If I want porn, I know where to get it. I don't need others to try and trick me into DLing it. Slimy bastards.
