Well, I've been working on music for the TVWP, and partly to help me come up with ideas and partly to get the damn FS2 theme out of my head, I finally decided to write something inspired by the FS Video music.
It's not identical, it's my own version, some of it is almost the same, other parts vastly different, and so far I've only got up to about halfway through the video, either way, I like the way things are going, so I thought I'd share with you ;)

You'll need something that can play .ogg files, obviously ;)
-
This should be impressive. Downloading.
-

-
The change at the end just after the electric guitars is a bit too sudden for my liking but apart from that
-
Glad you like :) The tune will carry on from that ending, I'll add an arpeggio that should lead down to the ending properly once I've figured out how to do my own version of the first part of the monologue music ;)
This may mean learning how to use a step-filter :nervous:
-
What did you use to compose that btw?
-
I liked it
-
That's done using Cubase, and mostly the Edirol Orchestral Softsynth. Though there is some work with the Strat, obviously, and NI Battery for the Drums :)
The only actual instruments I have access to atm are the guitar and a dumb Midi keyboard, so I have to use softsynths for everything. This piece took about 16-20 Hours in total before I was happy with it.
I've updated the file, btw, and added the arpeggio near the end. The thing is, [v] pulled a lot of tricks out the book, including mixing a 4/4 and a 3/4 melody at the same time, so let me know if this sounds better ;) It's always going to sound a little abrupt at the end, the same happens in the video, it fades to black, with those last bars and then starts a new track ;)

Any chance you could upload it as an mp3?
-
You know, were I not a person of a naturally sunny and optimistic outlook, I'd be narked that over 70 people have looked at this thread and only 4 have replied...:doubt:
Fortunately, I am a person of Sunny disposition, and therefore am narked because I suddenly realised the ending of the tune was a 5th below the final phrase, for those that care. For those that don't it means I did away with a lot of messiness at the end, and finished off the first half. :D
Updated.
Oh and Corsair, I'll try to get an mp3 up shortly :)

I like it. It captures the Freespace feel perfectly. :arr::yes:
-
Can you give birth to my musically inclined children please?
-
Kickass really good work
-
:jaw: Woah, awesome!
-
Outstanding. It's too short though... :p
-
Wee! 'tis the intro theme! With a combination of FS1 soundtracks a bit. And stuff. Kickass
-
Nice "arreglo". :)
I don't know the translation for that word, applied to music that is...
-
Thanks so much Flipside! I'm gonna listen to it as soon as I get out of class.
-
Very good and in the right mood, always felt that big guitar solos didn't really suit Freespace combat.
-
Oh yes, you're so going to love TVWP for the music alone. ;7
-
Nicely done.
-
w00t. I liked it as an independent piece, though TBH I never ran through the original FS2 music to remind myself for comparison.
'Tis good though.
-
Wow, I love it. The guitar mixed in reminds me a bit of the Halo themes (a good thing) while still retaining the Freespace theme. I fear I may listen to it on repeat for the rest of the afternoon ;)
Outstanding work.
-
LOL Thanks a lot all :D
Well, the second half of it will be a lot harder to do technically, because it uses a lot more 'effects' like the wind in the desert etc, and that filtered synth sound, so I may leave that for a while, but I'm glad you enjoyed it so far :)
It's been a learning experience, I'll just say 12-beat triplets in 140bpm when the accent is changing between 1-3 bars depending on where in the tune you are is as unpleasant as it sounds :p
-
I like it a lot, but it deviates too much from the musical style of the FS2 soundtrack. The electric guitars especially sound a little out of place.
Now, has anyone extracted the actual theme from the intro cutscene?
-
hehehe Well, it would be impossible to get the original track off the video, too many sound effects, and of course, the monologue for the second half.
It'd be very difficult to recompose the complete original video score, the pedalling jumps around a lot (listen to the picked Orchestras in the background of the video).
However, if we ever get round to making an SCP Vid or the like, and music is needed, I'll have a go at it if wanted :)
-
Yo Flipside that is absolutely freakin' amazing. I love it! Make more! More I say!!
-
Yep, still listening to it :D
-
Excelent :)
-
I got one thing to say to this.
:jaw:
Holy ****, dude. This is freaking awesome.
Don't be surprised if I start PMing you for music sometime soon. :D
-
Dude...omg...This rocks!
Make battle music dude...You've gotta make battle music!
(and maybe even enemy/friendly arrival music too...)
-
Very impressive :D:yes:

You have all these talented people and you never release screenshots. I want to know what the hell you've been doing all this time.
-
We've been..... plotting.
-
Not true. Swamp Thing is constantly releasing screenshots. :p
-
Where?
(And since you're no longer using the old Mustang Alpha model, can we have it?)
-
We're still using the Mustang Alpha ship. Whether we upgrade the model doesn't change that.
-
What makes him think we're not using it? :wtf: Hell, I've even done renders of it. :wtf:
-
That's the new model. If neither the Enceladus or Mustang Alpha versions of the old model are released, it will just drop off the face of the earth like so many other good models have.
-
Flipside, that was great! I love it. Make more.
Some comments:
-Guitar was aswem.
-More guitar time, longer.
-GUITAR, GUITAR!
-Still on repeat, and will be for some time..
-The drums at the end, maby extend that, or have a drum part like that somewhere in the beginning\middlde of One of your many songs. More drum time.. bass is good. lol.

Umm. No.
No it is not a new model. It has alterred maps, but it is in no way a new model. (Although I really hate how horribly hackish the ship is, and may just be forced to make a new one, some day)

Welcome to my world.
-
Neat.
-
i like it, until the ending.
-
Upon further listening, I think this is actually better than the FS2 intro music.
Then again, I am a sucker for a good riff :D
-
lol. yeah, it compares with the origional Fs2 music. As good as it or almost better.
-
LOL Well, I'm glad your all enjoying it. Thanks for the comments! :)
Funny thing is, the more I listen to that last section, the more I think I was subliminally inspired by Live and Let Die ;)

Now you're ruined it for me :D
-
Flipside, are you working on any other songs? Is any more done?
I liked that song so much i burned it to CD. LOL! Portable FS2 music.. good.
Btw, can anyone give me a link or post links to MP3 versions of the FS2 music, or high quality fs2 music? *From FS1\FS2*
-
Thanks :) I'm doing stuff for TVWP at the moment, but no doubt I'll be doing of my own stuff as well, so no doubt I'll post it here :D

Bump.
-
flipside do something about that ending, its too abrupt and doesnt fit with the rest of the piece, almost ruins it for me

Download the mv_music.vp and extract the .ogg files from there. Alternatively take a look in the download sections of HLP and VolitionWatch.
-
Hey Flipside, mind if I use your tune in a project of mine? ;7
-
*cough*PM*cough*
-
hehehe S'ok, I saw it :) And no, I don't mind in the slightest :)
-
Flip, you got a release date, for the next tune?
-
Thanks, man! :D
*cough*PM*cough*
Sorry. forgot about that little feature. :p
-
No worries :)
I'll probably try and get some more stuff done this weekend, most of it'll be for the Terran Vasudan War, but I'm looking into working the Freespace 'theme' some more as practice in case we ever do this SCP Demo-video, so I'll probably keep people updated on that in this thread :)
-
I didn't like it to be honest. There just wasn't enough body to the music and it was too repetitive.
-
It's the Freespace theme, I shifted it a 6th up, but other than that, the melody is the same, Dm, DmDim7 etc, if anything the original Freespace theme uses more repeats of phrases than I do :)
I'll agree the ending still needs work, but I didn't compose the first 3/4 of it ;)
Edit : Trust me, if I had let myself have free reign, as I'm doing with it for a new version, It would be much darker ;)

Did this one a few months ago, pretty simplistic, but thought you'd like it :)
-
Hey Flip, your Darkest Hour link is broke.
-
Second link doesn't work, but the other two old ones, while being more techno than what I'm used to, are pretty good. Not near the theme from earlier, but certainly good.
Are you writing in-game music too? You know, with battle, arrival, success and death variants, and all that?
-
Oooops.... fixed :)
Yep, I'm trying to do arrivals, ambients, battle etc for TVWP, the works ;)
-
I'm sure I've already told you that I absolutely love Darkest Hour already :D
Well in case you'd forgotten, I do :D
-
Yeah most of them are good. I love darkest hour also.
