Title: Decent: Freespace The Great War problem
Post by: Razgriz on February 06, 2005, 07:41:43 pm
Im running on a HP Computer, P4 processor, with some really advanced Omega NVidia card.  And for some odd reason, when i play on Freespace:  The Great War, when im in game, ill hit tab, and for some reason, i get that wierd clicking noise like you normally would when your Afterburners run out completely.  Well the afterburners dont even fire.  And during the briefings, the screen wont even switch over to the next stage of the briefing automatically like it normally would.  And i also get this same problem for Freespace 2, can anyone help me with this problem, because im really missing playing these two great games and the mods the people create.

For the afterburner, its XP being XP... Try the SCP to fix it in FS2, or compatability mode for FS1.

For the Breifing, well, we're at a loss... I and a few others have that problem, and cannot trace it back to anything distinct... You can sometiomes get it to work by pressing Shift-(Right arrow) and then using the left arrow...

Try the SCP as well, as you'll have more fun :p ...

Your gonna have to elaborate on that, where exactly is the SCP and how to get it, and what exactly is it? *notes it has been ages since hes roamed these forums*

yes, and both bugs effect both games, at the same time, regardless.  :ha:

Yes, but DLing the SCP doesn't fix FS1's problems! :ha:

Just run the game in Win98 compatibility mode... that'll fix it.

Eh, it wasn't very apparent. And you didn't specify which compatibility mode. :p

Post by: Hippo on February 06, 2005, 08:53:56 pm
ANY compatability mode works. Therefore, further specification is moot.

Exits are to your right and left, and flamethrowers are under your seat. Be careful, though, as they are sometimes filled with water, so bring your own Napalm or try to club someone with the non-working shotguns in the weapon closet. Also, be careful while wandering the ventilation shafts. If you see a large, six-legged creature that looks really pissed, it’s probably Carl, give him your lunch and he'll hopefully go away. In the event of an emergency, pray.  The Plasma rifles in the forward locker are released only by an Admin, [V] God, or hyperintelligent shade of the color blue. Oh, and whatever you do, don't mention the word Freespace followed by the number 3.

The game is called DeScent: Freespace, not Decent Freespace. :)

Well scratch FS2, i cant even reinstall the thing now since i cant trust no one around the house to put the CD back when they are supposed to as not to scratch the bloody thing

As for Descent Freespace, how do i get it to run in Windows98 mode?  Cause im running Windows XP, which in my opinion is a POS

create a shortcut to it, then right-click the shortcut then click properties. Then the compatibility tab.

Either the HoTU version, in Karajorma's FAQ, or head to game-warden.com and find all three ISO's uploaded for use... I'd reccomend the ISO's, since they have everything...

If you've already got it installed, just run the SCP.  Getting the ISO's is probably a good idea for backup or whatever, but the SCP serves the same function as a crack as you don't need the CD's to play it.

Nope, FS2 isnt installed, thats why i need the installer if anyone knows of any that way i can install it without the two cd's

FS2 is three CD's, and if you download the ISO's, you can burn them to blank cd's, and have fully functional copies with minimal work...

Problem is that MatthewPapa isn't hosting the download on GW for the time being due to the massive bandwidth drain he got when someone posted the address on the somethingawful.com forums.

If you have BitTorrent you can always get it here (http://www.tbp-bt.com/)

Err. You can probably mount them with the daemon tools.

Daemon Tools?

Its a program to run ISO's, instead of having to actually burn them to a CD... Raa can probably link to it... It emulates a CD drive apparently, and makes things like even CD switching quick and painless...
Title: Decent: Freespace The Great War problem
Post by: WMCoolmon on February 07, 2005, 08:20:27 pm
Lets you mount the isos as virtual drives.

It's probably better to just burn them, so you still have the ISOs, but you can remove them from the hard drive.

All the SCP is designed to be installed from the hard drive to the hard drive so there should be no problem with running it from the HD.

if i burn them to CD's, what size of Blank CD's would i need to get, the big 72-82 Minute ones or what?
Title: Decent: Freespace The Great War problem
Post by: Hippo on February 07, 2005, 08:28:38 pm
they should all be less than 600mb, so a 700mb CD will be fine for each...

Yay, so im only really wasting a good half day for the file download, and a good 5 dollars for 3 blank 700mb CD's, good deal to me for such a kick ass game :D

ok....i got the entire FS2 thingy (all three of the .rar files)  And i downloaded the Daemon Tools, someone mind explaining where i go from there?
Title: Decent: Freespace The Great War problem
Post by: karajorma on February 08, 2005, 02:36:45 pm
use WinRAR to unpack the rar files. Install and run Daemon Tools.

A little red icon will appear in your system tray. Right click on it. Choose Virtual CD/DVD ROM. Set number of devices>>3 (You might as well mount all the CDs at the same time. You can turn this down to a reasonable number later :D ).

Left click on the icon. Choose Device 0. A file requester pops up. Choose the first .iso/.cue or .nrg file that you unpacked. (not certain which format was used for this but Dameon Tools won't care.)

The FS2 installer should pop up if you've got autostart selected. If not just go to my computer and treat it like you would a normal CD Drive.

Repeat with devices 1 and 2 to insert the other CDs when you're asked for them.

Not that it can't be found however... :nervous:

But nothing has ever been done with it, as its coding is apparently more archane than FS2's...

*is sure Goober will say arcane is the wrong word*

Depends on what you want to say.  Arcane works (it's not spelled with an H :p) but you may have wanted to say archaic.
