Anyone else tired of storming the Normany coastline or blowing up the Reichstag? Me either, but for the sake of variety, I think a WWI shooter would be fun. You know, 40 missions of sniping from trenches, avoiding rats and trenchfoot, equiping your gas mask at the right time, etc. End it all with a collective 600 man rush across 200-meters of No-Man's Land only to have everyone but you and the chef be cut to smithereens. Throw in some Far Cry-ness, and people are bound to buy it.
-
i want a realistic nam era flight sim damn it. i want both choppers and planes too.
-
How about realistic Korean War sim. The pinnacle of prop fighters and the early jet fighters....still using guns!
-
I want a new Space Sim! Preferably FS3!
-
LOL Well, failing that, if someone did a decent modern version of Carmageddon 2, preferably with buying upgrades, rather than spending hours hunting for things on top of buildings, I'd pay for it ;)
-
I want to see a Napoleonic FPS. With Sharpe.

Cavalry Charge!!!

I would be happy with just a Halo 2 conversion for the PC. Damn those console elitists...
-
technically, Iron Storm was a WW1 shooter... just set in an alternate 1960 where it's still raging.. :p
but i wanna see more original FPS's out there.

Amen... nobody has really pulled that off well.. definitely not BF:V
-
Aye, but Iron Storm was crap. :p
Would be interesting, but it'd be hard to come up with a decent narrative to put the player in. There wasn't much in the way of covert ops or missions involving only a few people back then. Unless you make something up, of course. Perhaps you could play a French soldier at the Maginot Line, and have to fight your way back to the Allied lines after the Germans overrun the fortifications. Or maybe it could jump from place to place like Call of Duty did. You could have the Turkish campaign, both European fronts, etc. Or perhaps the fighting in colonial Africa would give you some options for interesting missions...
Problem is, I don't know that a developer would make a game where you don't play an American, or at least only a very few missions, what with them entering only very late in the war.
A shooter set in the Spanish Civil War, or during the Korean War, or in Malaya or somewhere like that would be good. Where the technology is changing, so you use something other than the standard WW2 M1/Bren gun/BAR/MP44 combo, or the M16/SAW/shotgun combo of modern shooters. If it was set in the Spanish Civil war, you'd have all kinds of odd weapons - proper old-fashioned bolt-action rifles, water-cooled machine guns, hardly any automatic weapons at all. Would require a unique style of play to beat, as opposed to the usual charge/snipe options.
Or a WW2 shooter, but involving somewhere other than Europe or the island-hopping campaign in the Pacific. Perhaps the Burmese campaign, or the fighting in China, or covert ops in Singapore and the Phillipines or something. Or you could play an SOE agent in Norway or France, where you have to sabotage things and assassinate SS officers and the like. That'd be cool, more like Thief or Splinter Cell with stealth elements.

I had a bit of complaining about this on WS:

The war games like BF1942, MOHAA, and COD are good, but lacking in imagination IMHO.
There are a lot of scenarios that could be explored with those engines:
Falklands War: Play as Harrier pilot, Commando, SAS, or Navy commander, OR the Argentinian troops, pilots, and amphibious teams.
Waterloo: Play as Brit, French, or Austrian infantry and cavalry, or artillary - And I mean as a FPS, not some abstract general overlooking the field. You would be right there with musket and bayonet....
Gulf War 1/2: Don't know if this has been done, but you could again be ground troops, special forces, or pilot F117's, Tornados, B1s, or whatever. Or play insurgents trying to repel the invasion, blowing up oil fields and stuff like that...
Legion: Play a Roman soldier as the empire advances across Europe into Britain. Travel through Switzerland, Germany and France and across the Channel. Fight the Gauls, Celts, Picts etc. with spears, swords, catapults etc. Ride chariots and horses into battle, see Boudicea destroy London, that sort of thing...
Revolution: Fight on either side as America wins (or not) independance from Britain. Plenty of opportunities to use pistols, muskets, and cannon here I would have thought....
BF1914: WW1 - Get in the trenches, go 'over the top' and charge the German machine gun nests. Tanks available near the end. Play Brit, French, German, US, or Belgian foot soldiers....
There is so much to choose from in history, I haven't even touched on the the civil wars in Britain and America, Ancient Greek wars, Japan vs. China, the Boer War, Indian Sepoys, The Alamo, The 100 Years War, King Arthur, Troy, etc etc
So lets have some interesting FPS games please.....

So, yeah WW1 has possibilities I feel, but the most important factor is imagination

I'd love an updated Carmageddon 2. 3 sucked and ruined it.
-
Oh hell yes... Carmageddon has so much untapped potential it's not even funny... with todays modern graphics and using real cars (as well as fictional ones) you could have so much fun...
One of my favourite activities when I was younger was tearing around the airport map on C2 with a downloaded Dodge Viper. Bliss.

I agree with Clave here, there are so many other subjects you could use aside from the standard WW2. I myself have never been really interested in WW2 or modern wars in general, and as such, somebody should do a game based on 18th c. warfare (wich has been almost totally ignored), with muskets, pretty uniforms and all ;)
Although I'm strongly against portraying wars as entertainment, since they're all essentially big meatgrinders, such games could be good for simulating what was it like to be a regular infrantryman, and to participate in such battles as, say, Battle of Poltava (which pretty much was a 'meatgrinder'). Obviously they should be realistical, and 'pretty' violent as well.

i believe codemasters are working on Operation Flashpoint 2..

Yes they are. OFP is such a kickass game, I'm lovin' it.
17th/18th century warfare FPS would be pretty interesting, right until you get down to the point that most of the soldiers died of famine and disease, it was generally looting/raping/killing and individual soldier as we understand it did not really exist. It was massed cannon fodder attacks all the way (well, except for Polish husars, and we know how well they did against Sweden).
"LOAD MUSKE--_"
You have been killed. abort/retry
"LOAD MUSKETS! CHA--"
You have been killed. abort/retry
You have died of hunger
You have died of plague
"CHARGE!"
You have been killed. abort/retry
-
It could add interest if you are presented with choices:
1. Gradually lose energy due to hunger and thirst
2. Drink from a (possibly contaminated) well
3 Drink from a stream
4 Drink in the tavern, risking loss of aiming ability back in combat
The idea of a 'health pack' that instantly cures all things is a bit tired now...
Why not have your character die of Plague? (if careless) :p
-
Or they can do the way any other FPS do: you're a ubber hero, who won't get plague, who can avoid bullets and who can carry 172 Kg of ammo.
-
Apparently the Falklands mod for OpFlashpoint is nearing completion, and there are a few Napoleonic, US Civil War and such mods in progress as well.
-
What made me laugh was everyone going on about Carmageddon 2 being too violent, and yet, I'm playing NFSU2 at the moment, and if I were to believe this far less violent game, crashing into a right-angled wall at 145 miles an hour won't even scratch my paintwork....
Yes, and Carmageddon 2000 sucked. I think they should try again.
-
18th century warfare? Am I the only one who thinks that game would be so boring that gamers would shoot themselves?
*BOOM*
*Cock to mid-position*
*Clear flash pan*
*Insert ball and powder and ram it home*
*Pour more powder into pan*
*Cock all the way back*
*BOOM*
DAMNIT! I MISSED AGAIN!
-
Yes, if you are going for 'ultra-authentic' but it's game, so certain compromises would be made.
*stabs Ford with a Napoleonic bayonet* :p

LOCK ON: Modern Air Combat, and it's expansion, Flaming Cliffs. The expansion is rumored to be adding a helicopter :)

d0000000000000000d! Spanish Civil War shooter... Hemmingway style.
-
Hemingway style:
"I have finally beaten the game," said the young noob.
"Perhaps, but on what level?" asked the experienced player.
"It was on easy, but I will try it on harder levels."
"That is good."
The noob thought that the older player did not respect him for his accomplishment and he was bothered by this but he did not say anything for he believed that the older player would laugh at him.
"Yes. I will try it on hard," he said.
"Indeed. That is good."
"I think that I will feel better after this is done."
"Maybe, and maybe not. I am going home to bed."
The young noob thought about this more and the game seemed small in his head and he wondered why this was so but he could not think of anything except that it was nothing.
-
I should have known better. :doubt:
*chirp, chirp, chirp*
-
Yes, yes. That's Hemmingway's style exactly. :p
But I'm the killer of threads, not you. :p
-
i want a 17th century first person shooter. your weapons would be flint lock pistols and bayonettes. it would go something like this:
You see a bad guy
You shoot him
He shoots you
You are both knocked to 70% health
You both spend 10 minutes reloading your guns
You shoot each other again
ect.
It would take hours to finish one room.
-
Damnit carl! Stop posting before me after me! :p
-
Well, Raa, it looks like I've just refined a new technique for killing threads: literary humor. Feel free to add it to your repertoire.
Carl: If you made it 17th century we're probably talking wheel lock firearms, which would be even more of a pain in the ass. (Way to steal my joke, by the way. :D)
-
A WWI shooter would be boring and uninteresting, in my opinion. Why? Because most of WWI was trench warfare.
-
Snipers, tanks, night attacks, machine guns nests, artillery, mass charges, grenades, mortars - I'm sure something could be made of it..
-
But, as InfernoGod said, very little of that happened. It was mostly sitting around in filthy trenches, catching the flu, with shells flying over your head and the occasional cloud of mustard gas. Then, on the rare occasion that you left the trenches to cross "no man's land", it was just a big slaughter. It's very poor material for a combat game.
