it improves much of the graphics on the game. the engines look like engines instead of balls with spikes and the missle trails look like smoke instead of ribbons (no offense (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) ) plus the shivan super laser looks alot more like it does in the beginning cutscene of FS2. it also has some new backrounds. so what do you think?

Do the nebulas actually glow or is it the fact that I put 10 on top of one another?
WOW! The engine glows are amazing, and I almost fainted when I saw the suns.

And I've got the jaw that just hit the floor... wow that mods wicked! It really does add something to the game, with a little tweaking I think something of a larger scale version of this mod would be great... (implememnting a kind of a bump map on the ships and so on, altering other effects)...

When (or IF) the source code comes, I am quite sure that FS2 will be updated quite heavily.
But what I have become worried is, what if those updates are numerous and one does not work with others. Or at least it will be overwritten when installing another.
It would be the best if there would be ONE standard update, so everyone, especially newbies won't get so frustrated. It would be also much easier for everyone to maintain only one update packet for FS2. But surely that won't gonna happen, standards have always been our weak point, if you are not M$. i hope they give it 32 bit colour (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/cool.gif)

I think that would increase the size and RAM required of all textures used in game and hence increase the required hardware, and probably for not much increase in visual quality.

i reckon 512x512 32 bit textures could be handled.
as well as some more fancy effects, who knows?

512e2 textures can be done already, but they have to be in a 256 colour palette. Do we really need that my any colours? Starscapes may be different, because you can admire them, but most ships are flying past you quickly. I honestly don't think it's worth it for the ships.

when you are doing fancy ship textures it is. especially on caps hips since they dont go very fast and you get so colse to them you can notice the dithers and stuff.

32k... you want more than 256 colours on a single ship? use multiple maps, each map have its own palette of colour, so I think there's really no need of more colours.

the texture problem is evident on the FS2 Lucifer..
because it used decal maps and not tiled maps the "lack" of resolution makes it look pretty ugly.
512x512maps wouldn't tax an AGP4x system, even less one with a decent fillrate.
of course the addition of bump mapping channels, and maybe even another 8-bit channel for specularity would go down a treat. But I don't think the FS2 engine as it is uses a complex shading model (is it textured goraud?)
