Are
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp
tangoX_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp
just simply not hosted by anyone anywhere anymore? Fractux's server is busy to no end all the time.
I can't find a working download/ftp link at all.
Is this impossible to host permanently, and to be accessible at all times? Look, I only have a 56kb/s upload mylsef, but I can't be the one to give this **** to new people every time they come knocking on my door individually.
I'm sending the files to a guy now, because I can't find a working link anywhere, and suffice to say, it'll take a couple of hours
I know the files are big, but with the resources here, is it really that hard to find anyone who can host this?
-
The ones you just mentioned are :V: originals, meaning that it's a pain in the copyright-conscious butt to host them permanently.
-
Is that the only issue?
-
Game Warden used to host them but then they had bandwidth problems from the ISOs so they'll be down for a while.
-
Why is this in the SCP forum?
-
Becuase directly influences those who are trying to play it, and can't becuase of the effort it takes to get he game files needed.
I know of two players who have been either contacting me via email, or on IRC who have needed the US only installs becuase their versions are non-US.
Basically the issue is, if it is illegal to host them, then technically it is illegal for us to provide them the files, right? And if so, then more than a few of us have been being illegal. We either need to move to the Legal side, or find out how get V to release the lock on the files (as it were).
-
Well, I guess I could host them later this month. The first person to write/find a php script that controls downloads gets a cookie :) .
-
Killjoy: Well, the copyright situation around Freespace's copyright and IP is a legal wasteland filled with quicksands. If someone can indeed release the lock on those files, we're looking at a good option of magazine cover-disk distribution here. Or at least totally free downloadable SCP iso's, or something.
As for other issues, some of those files are friggin huge, meaning that the bandwidth might become an issue too.
-
Like I said I can host them if someone creates (or finds) a download script that is capable of tracking and controlling the number of downlods in a day.
-
Ignoring the bandwidth issue:
Why not just put a disclaimer that they will be removed if so requested by anyone who holds the rights to it.
I seriously doubt cops are gonna start beating down anyone's doors, but, in the event that it happens, we're not trying to defy authority or anything, and they can always be taken down.
-
That's more and more the direction I am going with V related stuff, like that. HOTU style disclaimer.
If anyone from Volition still reads the forum, I wouldn't mind having a quick chat on this and other issues, as people from all over the net have apparently impeded my ability to communicate with them without seeming like a raving lunatic.
Maybe someone will be at GDC and I can pin them down...
And yes, bandwidth is the issue. They are big files. They are popular files.
I need my bandwidth for my business, hosting these would kill me.
-
The problem is getting people to seed the downloads. While the ftp is usually full, the download can actually go faster if 5 people were to seed the all_fs2_fvp_files.zip I have on eMule.
My bandwidth is pretty limited as it stands. I was actually mulling over setting up a file hosting server form www.asmallorange.com with 200GB of bandwidth a month for 20USD, and getting people to pay for their bandwidth usage to cover the cost.
However, that is pushing the legal side more than the FTP currently is, and could get me intro trouble I don't want. But I honestly don't think interplay would bother getting on our backs. There is no chance of them making a profit off of FS2 anytime in the future, so its not really cutting into any profit margins.
I dunno, what are your thoughts ppl? With 200GB of bandwidth 267 people could download the 750MB package (or we can host a flly installable SCP version like I had though about a year ago). That comes to 8cents USD per download of 750MB (10cents per GB).
The system would be rather complex, but I have some good ideas for how such a system could work (and how it could pay for other file distribution.) People would just pay for a certain bandwidth quota and be able to grab however many files thay want.
Or, we just do it on a voluntary basis, whill will recoup some cost, but not all.
Anyays, just some Ideas I was thinking about again. I may be able to set this up during the summer.
The alternative to get around this is, as was said above, to get approval and to go with a host like gamespy that will distribute for free.
Anyways, just throwing ideas around.
Cheers!

forced bittorrent maybe?
-
Is there a way to get e-mule to share some files in a folder but nothing else? I run e-mule all the time and sharing the FS2.vp files wouldn't be a problem. What would be a problem is the fact that I'd be sharing the whole MindGames folder at the same time :D
EDIT : Actually I've just realised that my games partition actually is the one with space left in it I could just copy the files and give them release priority. The problem is that the hash file for everyone would be different if I RARed the files and sharing uncompressed VP files is rather silly.
-
Like I said I can host them....I have a unused account already paid out with 120 GB a month....All I need is a PHP script to help me regulate the downloads so things dont start going crazy (like when i put the ISO files up for download.)
-
I don't have FS2 at this machine, so just out of curiosity - how large are those files in total?

SOMEBODY HELP THAT MAN!
Also, eMule sucks. If you're going to share through a program, please for THE LOVE OF GOD, create a torrent with the .vp's, and share it through BitTorrent.
-
The reason why I suggested emule is cause everyone would have the same hash for the VP files. So although downloading them without packing them first is a waste of bandwidth everyone on the forum who uses e-mule could instantly become a seeder (providing I can find a way to only release selected files).
The ISO download on the B5 tracker was pulled precisely because of the number of leechers. While people like myself wouldn't mind seeding we'd have had to get hold of the files first which is a huge waste of bandwidth.
-
Uhhh to be honest I have no idea what you said.
Fact stands that eMule is a non-widespread piece of crap imitation of a crap program which used to be eDonkey.
Packing the .VP's, putting them on a .torrent and distributing the torrent should be substantially better, considering how widespread and useful BitTorrent is. The whole idiot "line" and "queue" thing is retarded in the world of today.
Also, I don't know if it's possible with eMule (I used it for five minutes, then it went into the bin, because it was that ****ty, and oh dear god when it was hashing the files I wanted to share. Jesus.) but on bit torrent (or bittornado, www.bittornado.com ) you can actually specify what to download in a pack of files, so people can choose which VP's they want to download.
-
It's not possible with Bittorrent to zip the files up (or RAR them, if the torrent uses RAR) and place them in your torrent downloads directory?
I'd've thought somebody would've made a torrent client smart enough to do that...

:wtf: Razorback alone supports 1 million users. I'm not going to get into a which is better argument. I use both azureus and emule cause I find both useful. I'm not saying that people shouldn't make a torrent for the vp files either. I'm simply saing that it won't hurt to have a emule/edonkey link as well so that people can use whichever client they are more comfortable with.

Ah. An objective view of the program! :D
-
Just ****ing torrent them and be done with it.

I misspoke.
It was five minutes using the program yes.
It spent a little longer on my computer though.
First, it took an hour to process the 60gigs that I chose for it to share, because guess what, it needs to hash.
After that was done, I found the files I want to download, and then it put me in a line.
I waited for three hours, download didn't start - program went byebye
-----------------
I have no issue if you want to provide an eMule hash, but even if you're going to do it, make the torrent the primary way of getting it, and eMule a far secondary.
Also, personal advice, take it or leave it, your choice.
Azures sucks balls. Change to BitTornado. Even if Tornado doesn't have the queue for your files, it's still rockhardasskicking than the Gay looking Azureus. Hell Az doesn't even have port forwarding, one of the main things about the entire system.
-
That's the other problem I have with BitTorrent. I keep being told that some other program is the best client for it :D I've been through 3 or 4 clients already :D
-
Well I guess it's all about what you need in the end :p
Also, Killjoy and I have already started on a .torrent. I have half of it, but it's going slow because his upload is kind of limited.
After he gets it to me, we're probably going to seed it to someone with a good free (of cap) constant upload, and then put the torrent up for download.
-
Well, I don't have time to dedicate to help set up a PHP download system if you want to set up one up, but you can get a number of free php download manager systems from
http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/File_Manipulation/Download_Systems/index.html
Again I can't recommend any since I haven't used them.
Cheers!

Okay -
I need..................one or two volounteers to share these .vp's off the bat.
Requirements:
You need to:
Have a decent upload rate (30-50kbps is....decent)
Be willing to share for a good portion of the day
Have access to all your firewalls/routers if you have them
Killjoy and I can share the .rar with the .vp's, but I can pretty much do it only over night when I'm sleeping, or when I'm not near the computer. I'd say that's about 12-15 hours out of 24, so that's kind of majestic as far as I'm concerned, but still not nearly enough.
After there are three or four of us on some kind of a schedule for sharing, then we can host the torrent, and say "Click here if you want to download the .vp's".
Any takers?
The way I figured this would work is the following. We'd create a thread, a sticky, or whatever, and we'd tell people in that thread to post if they need someone to seed these files (providing there, and only there, the link to the .torrent)
I wouldn't expect any of us to seed 24-7 so it'd be best to start seeding on request, considering I don't see 120 000 people coming over and intensly wanting the .vp's.
If anyone wants them, they post, and we fire up the torrents to let people download them (alternately, you can just keep it on 24-7 if you can, and seed it eternally, you won't see me complaining, but I'd consider that a little short of impossible)
Does that, sound good?
-
2 things
a) setting up a downlaod manager is not to hard, if people are intrestead i will try and find the ones i used on my site for a while
b) you can actauly host torrent off web server (the file u want downloaded, i never done this but my freind has)
-
I guess I *could* host some of them... but I dunno how long my PC can be on... Since I work 8 hour days, and when I'm here, people tend to turn my PC off on me... *glares at parents*

That's the extremely easy part.
Hard part is what Raa is talking about.
I am thinking of something else at the moment, but please, if you can, reply so that I can send you the content together with Killjoy, and we can start this thing.
-
I gonna set up a download site once I get the script properly configured..... Is there anyway we can make the tracker machine or torrent refer some clients to the server I am preparing to set up or would that be too hard to implement?
-
Plus, in my 7th mission I finallt got promoted to Lt. Jr Grade. So now I want to play more often, and don't like the idea of the torrent leaching my bandwidth... >.>
Gotta make it to Captain someday...

i not talking about the small torrent file, i am talking about hostin the file that people download i.e. the end product in case the of the b5 project the CD ISO not the torrent that u load up in the cleint.
-
Ah, okay I didn't get what you said.
-
np, what would be cool is a downlaod cleint that combines the p2p power of bit torrent with the reliablity of having 1 copy always present (web based)
if there was no one wiht the infomation u need online i would then download the info from the web server but fi there was people online with the infomation needed it would download from them and not bother with the web server :)
-
Well. I have a copy of all of the FS2 VP's in my shared directory in Shareaza... so that covers eDonkey, Gnutella1, and Gnutella 2...\
For me atleast....

The cbanims and tech room anims are there, too. But I'm tired of copying and pasting URN's... :p
Pm me for a specific one.
I'm capable of up to 120KB/s up, or more...

i got a source forge account for the Star trek mod i working on atm using the Fs2_open. If the copy write problem could be fixed i could easily host them
