OK currently I think it goes like this but I would like to know if I'm wrong on anything.
1) extract the HOTU version to a directry
2) under the data subdirectory find the following list of subdirectorys, deleate all files and any in futher sub directorys, don't deleat any folders
The list:
voice cbanims intelanims sounds music models maps interface hud force feedback fonts effects
3) extract the open sourse exe and launcher, same directory
4) plance the VP files inside the freespace 2 directory, use the auto extracters
5) run the launcher, tell it where the Open sourse FS2 exe is and click run.

Looks pretty sound to me. Welcome to HLP, Tortanick. :)

THe most useful first post I've seen for a while, BTW
:welcome:
Exits are to your right and left, and flamethrowers are under your seat. Be careful, though, as they are sometimes filled with water, so bring your own Napalm or try to club someone with the non-working shotguns in the weapon closet. Also, be careful while wandering the ventilation shafts. If you see a large, five-limbed creature that looks really pissed, it’s probably Carl, give him your lunch and he'll hopefully go away. In the event of an emergency, the n00bs will be the last to get into the escape pods, if there’s any room left. The Plasma rifles in the forward locker are released only under authorization of an Admin, [V] God, or hyperintelligent shade of the color blue. Oh, and whatever you do, don't mention the word Freespace followed by the number 3, if you do put on your Flame-proof suit.

I got it right, thats good to know :)

I'm not 100% certain you did. The VP files you refer to. Are they from the FTP/GameWarden or are you talking about the SCP Media vp files.
The Media VP files are NOT a replacement for the regular ones. If you delete the contents of Data without having the standard vp files to replace them you will almost certainly stop FS2 from working. (My bet is that it will crash out saying that it can't find a certain .pcx file).
If you were talking about the standard VP files
sparky_hi_fs2.vp, stu_fs2.vp, warble_fs2.vp, tangoX_fs2.vp (Where x=1 to 3) and smarty_fs2.vp then you're correct. Carry on.
There's a whole load more info in my FAQ where there's a special page devoted to HotU. If it doesn't answer a question tell me and I'll update it.
-
Thats the ones, I'm getting them form the FTP, I would have liked to see a section labled:
"I have the rar VP files in one folder, the HOTU version in another and the open sourse exe and launcher in a third, now what?"
-
Ah. In the (lack of) style of the FAQ then :D
I'VE GOT A LOT OF BANDWIDTH/TIME WHAT SHOULD I DOWNLOAD FROM THE FTP?
If you have the time and bandwidth the best thing to do is to download all the the vp files from the FTP rather than just downloading a few of them as this makes it much simpler because you can then replace all the HotU files in your data folder.
To do things this way you should get the following VP files from the FTP.
# root_fs2.vp
# sparky_fs2.vp
# sparky_hi_fs2.vp
# stu_fs2.vp
# tango1_fs2.vp
# tango2_fs2.vp
# tango3_fs2.vp
# smarty_fs2.vp
# warble_fs2.vp
Look in your Freespace2 folder. Take all the files with the extension .vp and drop them in your data folder. Rename your data folder to Data-HotU
Make a new Folder and call it Data. Go into Data-HotU and copy the players folder into Data.
Move all the .vp files you downloaded into the Freespace2 folder.
If you plan to use FRED you should download this file (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/freddocs.rar), make a folder in data called freddocs and extract the contents to it.
That's it. To all intents and purposes what you have now is exactly the same as the retail install of FS2.
(Actually I tell a lie. I think you may also have to download a couple of .reg files and add them to your registry to set things up correctly. However I believe the SCP launcher will also set those up so it shouldn't be a problem).
Now you basically install FS2_Open in the same way someone with retail would do it. i.e shove the media files, launcher and exes into the freespace2 folder and run the launcher.

The cutseens are not on that list?
are you ment to get them from here?
http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/fs2movies/
If so you create a folder called movies and all the downloaded files go there right? and finaly dose that folder go into C:\freespace2 or C:\freespace2\data
-
I suppose I should have mentioned the cutscenes since they are important if you're playing FS2 for the first time. :)
Movies can go into Freespace2\data\movies or freespace2\ It really doesn't matter. I prefer to keep them in the freespace2\ folder because I occasionally have had to move the data folder.
-
Deleate please, this post was ment to be blow the next one.
-
weeeeeeird, my post appeard above yours but I posted after reading it? oh well, I'll delete it to get things back in order
Thanks :) but you didn't say if there on the FTP or the other website.
P.S. this should be stickied as its perfect for a first time person like me installing FS2 :)
-
Sorry. I thought you knew where to get them from. They are available on the FTP but it's better to go to
http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/fs2movies/
You might want to grab the FS1 movies while you're at it from
http://oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/FS1movies/
Thanks go to Kosh for the webspace :)

I wrote an FAQ for a small part of a MMORPG (A tail in the desert) and I learnt one thing
Never Ever assume your reader knows anything
EVER ;)
I knew the site existed but I didn't know if that was the right movies, the wrong movies, the right movies in the wrong format or what :) then a third person may come down and know even less than me.
BTW thanks :)

Well it seems I have one more question before I can finally play.
Currently I have, intro, colossus, endpart1,2a.2b bastion. mono1,2,3&4 all in the C:\freespace directory and all in avi format.
I use launcher52.exe and fs2_open_3_6_5.exe. but I can't run cutsceenes ingame :( any idea whats wrong.
Btw I tryed moveing them to C:\freespace\data\movies.
-
3.6.5 never ran movies for me. I think you've done everything correct but have simply got the wrong build. :) (It's been so long since I used it that I'd forgotten that fact somewhat).
Something from the recent builds forum would probably fix that problem. You may get other bugs with some of the very recent builds cause there have been some rather large changes recently. I'd suggest going for something released soon after 3.6.5 instead.
While I'm here a couple of words of warning.
1) mv_music.vp/zPack.vp are causing crashes. Don't use mv_music.vp at all for the time being and if you're using zPack you should extract this file (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/musicTBL.rar) to Freespace2\Data\tables\
2) The cain model is missing from one of the media.vp files that should have it. If you are using mv_models this won't affect you. If not there's a Fix here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,29938.0.html)
Sorry that it's been such a pain to install FS2_Open and get it working for you BTW. I'm going to update the FAQ to reflect the difficulties you've had :)
-
They should be in C:\games\freespace2[/u]
-
Maby I call it freespace because its easyer and I don't have the origional?
Well its called FS2 on my comp but thats just a "for arugements sake" ;)
As for it being a pain, the pain part was getting slots on the FTP. normally tinkering and odds and ends in varous FAQs and readmes are enough but since I had so much time during download/slot hunting I felt like I'd just ask for once :)
-
That's good.
I want to make sure that the process is as uncomplicated as it can be. I don't want people leaving the community because the find it too hard to get everything to run.
