.....holy
This is Xenu's first pass at completely MUCKING up the Viper into a battle hardened state.
Inspired by his efforts, I took up the task of making an intermediate stage to the Viper's life-cycle.

Indeed. Are we ever going to get some original series models out of you Omni?
-
Omni, why do the target boxes on those vipers appear to be the size of the pilot?
-
Think you could do the lower couple of images with in-game decals?

Wow...damage decals, too! :D
-
Why do I think a Viper wouldn't even be functional with that kind of damage?
-
The chunk missing from the right engine may have something to do with it. To me, "battle damage" means scorches and burns, dings, and other cosmetic failings that don't affect flight performance or hull stability. Literally having holes in the plating usually wouldn't get past the first pass of maintanence screening.

:jaw: :jaw: really cool!

Ok, now thats (the middle stage) is what I wanted!

All the combat damage on the bottom pictures should be removed, IMHO, and made into damage decals (those are still in the code, right?)
-
Yes.

Keep & use for debris model.

Don't throw away the damaged Viper. One big point of the series is limited resources, right? You could always use that one for a sudden Cylon attack shortly following another one. (Not enough time to fix up the fighter, but a dire enough situation that the fighter is scrambled anyway.)
Or, for a Viper a pilot has ejected from for whatever reason.
It just looks really cool. :D

Thanks for posting the regular new texture earlier, I like the shiney untouched one... I'm all for in-combat damage though, but you have tio HIT me first! :;
-
Wow, Omni! you :thepimp:ed it out!
-
Omniscaper, if you let me play with that Viper I will make weapons and thrusters (see B5 v3 for example) for your TC (and weapons models if you need them).
-
Hmmm... Please clarify, Deepblue
-
It needs more dirt. ^_^
(I'm sorry, it's just an old XWAU thing.) The dirt is really quite understated and suitable on the one that is ... not busted.
-
XWAU!? You were part of that team? I'm a great admirer of their work back in the day. I've always loved the game, but hated TG's art department. It seems like they just took the same models from the original X-wing for DOS and plugged in some half-assed textures. XWAU made the XWA experience much more enjoyable.
Hmm, more dirt huh? My plan is to have different textured Vipers to be used through out the campaign. Progressively getting more scruffy. This is the first step.
The specular hightlights are washing out much of the detail. I ddn't give the Spec-maps the same love and attention I gave the base texture.

Ah but Omni I was their 12-year old public relations boy back in those days, and mostly I had a living writing readmes and posting news. But it is sure good to know that the impact my friends' work has had - and I was technically supposed to promote the mod. :)
Actually I meant that the dirt level is quite fine on the current Viper, but if you do look at the current XWAU X-Wing, you can use that it is considerably dirter, partially because it helps to give definition to the white X-Wing, I think. I love your idea of dirter and dirter Vipers though; maybe you could use slight environmental maps for the first Viper you fly, so that it's shiny and new and everthing.
