Post by: Kegel on February 16, 2005, 06:01:11 am
I have an old copy that Im currently playing but disk 2 is corrupt.  I remember reading that the game was going to be re-released but havent been able to find it available anywhere.  Any ideas?  I would love to purchase the game for my collection again.

Well, you could waste 43 bucks and buy from Interplay.

Or you could ask somebody for the disk two ISO. I know somebody around here has it.

You can get it semi legally sine the EULA lets you burn copies for your friends as long as you gain no profit from the ordeal.

Exits are to your right and left, and flamethrowers are under your seat. Be careful, though, as they are sometimes filled with water, so bring your own Napalm or try to club someone with the non-working shotguns in the weapon closet. Also, be careful while wandering the ventilation shafts. If you see a large, five-limbed creature that looks really pissed, it’s probably Carl, give him your lunch and he'll hopefully go away. In the event of an emergency, the n00bs will be the last to get into the escape pods, if there’s any room left. The Plasma rifles in the forward locker are released only under authorization of an Admin, [V] God, or hyperintelligent shade of the color blue. Oh, and whatever you do, don't mention the word Freespace followed by the number 3.

And don't ask why either...the others (gestures with head at the venerable ones) don't like it much.

On a more serious note, you can but FS1 & 2 together at Amazon, hhere (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005N99E/qid=1108571451/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-4126456-1447816)

Not according to the back of the manual, though ("you may not copy the software except that you may make a single copy for backup purposes only.  You may not load, sell, rent, lease, give, sub-license or otherwise transfer the software (or any copy) unless expressly permitted to do so")

Of course, that same statment implies that making mods (derivative works, i.e. using Volition textures for example) is also forbidden.

My copy didn't come with a manual, so I never even saw anything like that.

Maybe it's a .pdf file on your disk.

No, no PDF file on any of the disks.  Nor was there anything manual-like about the packaging.

Read the file EULA.txt - that's the real legal mumbo jumbo that matters. It also appears during installation, so its the real thing you have to accept before using the game.

Or you could just get the HOTU version and tear the necessary files out of it.

AFAIK When the source code was released, you could share the game with friends and acquaintences. Since this guy already owns the game, I can't see Interplay or [V] being the least bit concerned. Interplay, at least, have far bigger things to worry about at the moment ;)

Why is is always disk 2 that's corrupt? Out of all the requests we get for one disk about 90% are for Disk 2. Disk 3 gets used almost as much by the game so why is it? :)

What is the current status of interplay BTW? Anyone know? Are they 6 feet under yet?

Yes, I think so.

And Kegel...

Welcome to HLP!

Exits are to your right and left, and flamethrowers are under your seat. Be careful, though, as they are sometimes filled with water. If this is the case, try to club someone with the non-working shotguns in the weapon closet. Also, be careful while wandering the ventilation shafts, because sometimes Carl the Shivan lurks in there. If you happen to come across him, just toss him your lunch and hope that it satisfies him. If it doesn’t… pray. In the event of an emergency, you can and will be used as a flotation device.  The Plasma rifles in the forward locker are released only under authorization of an Admin, [V] God, and/or hyperintelligent shade of the color blue. Oh, and whatever you do, don't hit on Tiara, no matter how good of an idea it might seem.

Try to see if you can still get it off HOTU... that might work.

Actually, Disk 3 doesn't necessarily get used as much.  I'm not entirely positive, but I think the main campaign does use both disks about equally, when you have to use them to even start the next mission.  However, after you're done with the main campaign, you can use just one disk to start it up.  I know I usually used just Disk 2.

Disk 2 has the intro on it. ;)
Title: WHERE CAN I BUY THIS GAME?
Post by: Kegel on February 17, 2005, 12:28:17 pm
Its actually the intro file, its an .exe that is corrupt.  Its the only file that I can;t copy from the CD.  I was backing up my disks as they are getting beat looking.  Disk 2 seems to work when the game asks for it...when does the intro play?  When you start the game?  Ive never seen it...this is probably why.

Is there a disadvantage to using the underdogs version and just adding all the relevent files?  I was thinking of burning a new copy.  I assume an advantage there would be you dont have to swap any disks?  Is it the complete game?  What would be the advantage of finding the 3 .iso's as compared to using the underdogs version?

This game is so amazing...so ahead of its time.

The HOTU version is not the complete game, but if you add all the other files, it will be the whole game.
Title: WHERE CAN I BUY THIS GAME?
Post by: karajorma on February 17, 2005, 02:33:23 pm
The main advantage of the HotU version is that it's a smaller download and very easy to find. If you can find the iso for disk2 that's a much better choice if you have the time/bandwidth.

BTW if you already have FS2 installed (and your first post makes is sound like you do) and Disk2 is the problem why not try installing FS2_Open or a no CD crack and avoid the need for the CD completely?

That should allow you to play while you get yourself a copy of the second CD from whereever.

bidding on ebay right now.  65 bucks so far.

You could get FS2 + FS1 from Amazon for $38. Stop bidding and let the auction end and hope you don't win. If you don't, buy it from Amazon. If you do, you've just wasted 27 bucks.

Ach! I got my FS2 on e-bay too. I paid 90 greenbacks, a bit pricey, but it was unopened and even the case didn't have a fingerprint on it.
Be sure you know exactly what you're buying or you might end up with 3 scratched CDs smeared with fingerprints in 10 cent jewel cases.

This is it.  Its the sim of the year edition..the one I wanted.  Its more fo rmy collection than anything.  Looks good but thats as high as I will bid.  I guess if anyone wants to go higher its yours.  65 seems fair for a classic.

Good thing you lost! You want it in the original box that it comes in so you know it hasent been tampered with. Who knows how many scratches were on the back of those CD's. Maybe that's why he had them face down...

Or look at the HotU page of my FAQ. Lots of people ended up needing one after patching.
