I'm new to 3dsm4 and have no idea how I can wrap the textures onto the model to render. any help would be appreciated

UVW modifier :P
or if you want to map individual faces manually, apply a UVW map modifier then use the UVW Unwrap modifier.
or theres a useful little plugin called "texporter" that works quite well on simple(ish) objects

If he's doing what I think he's doing, it's a (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) model, so it's a bit more complicated.
