I usually can see them eventually, and I can blur my vision, too, but it still isn't helping for this particular image...

perhaps I'm too tired.

...and it's an Orion.

Post by: Flipside on February 22, 2005, 01:45:21 pm: These never ever work for me, no matter how hard I try, but my left eye is the wrong 'shape' ( A 'Football' instead of a 'Rugby Ball' as my optician described it, or Soccerball as opposed to Football if you are American) so maybe that has something to do with it :(

Post by: Dark_4ce on February 22, 2005, 04:26:13 pm: Its all about stereoscopic perception. Its true that some people, try as they might can't seem to get the picture working. The best way I try to explain it to my friends is to make them focus on something behind the picture. So if I had a picture, I'd hold it up and ask my friends to focus on me, then holding that focus look down at the pic. They get a small glimpse of what it was, before they focus on the pic again, but that usually shows them how they're meant to percieve the picture. In the army we used sterescopic telescopes when I was in the mortar regiment, and those that could use them, usually became the spotters. It was a fun little excersize.

Post by: StratComm on February 22, 2005, 05:17:14 pm: I think the problem with a lot of these - especially ones created by people new at it - is that the image they use tends to take up the entire space. Unfortunately, the edges of the magic eye picture tend to anchor your vision back to normal perception, and so if you try to focus on the ends you get (somewhat unpleasantly) jerked back into normal sight. If the Orion was about 75% of its current size the effect would be worlds better. Oh, how does it look with the high-poly Orion as the source model?

Post by: Flipside on February 22, 2005, 05:37:40 pm: I can make out 'something' but the moment my eyes try to determine anything other than 'something' my vision instantly flips back to focus.

It doesn't hurt to do it, one of the advantages of my condition is that I can focus on several objects at various distances at the same time, however my depth perception in 3D games is terrible.

i focused on the reflections on my computer screen to see it.

Post by: phreak on February 22, 2005, 08:48:57 pm: i can't do these on paper. i don't think i could stare at a computer monitor long enough to get it to work. plus the last time i saw one of these on a PC, it had the goat-se picture come up after about 45 seconds so im scarred for life.

Post by: Col. Fishguts on February 23, 2005, 04:10:59 am: This is just awesome, it's even better than the ones in the magic-eye books, those were kinda blurry most of the time. But this is perfectly sharp, I can see each and every turret, and even look around. Kudos to Galemp :yes:

EDIT: Moving your mouse cursor over it while looking at it in "3d-mode" is _really_ weird.

For those who don't see it:
It's easier to let it "snap" in, when you know what you're supposed to see. So, you should see an Orion in roughly isometric view, with the engine section on the left edge and the bow coming at you in the centre of the image.

The plane to focus on is about 0.5-1m behind your monitor (if your sitting about 30-50 cm in front of it), so when the 3d effect snaps in, it's like there's a "room" cut out behind your monitor with the Orion floating in it.

Just relax your eyes and let your mind wander (thus not focussing on your monitor)....if the image starts to form, don't move your head and try to ignore that you're looking at a flat monitor.
Once the effect snaps in, you can focus on the Orion and the plane behind it without loosing the effect. And if you've done it once, it's very easy to look away and the look and get the 3d effect very quickly.

Post by: Spidey- on March 04, 2005, 01:19:35 am: For those of you who can't (I think you need both eyes though), try this, though it may be harder with a monitor. Bring your face close to the monitor, slam your head against the screen...lol JK, with your face close, relax your eyes so your vision blurs. At this point you may or maynot sort of see a distortion in the image. Slowly pull back without changing to focus of your eyes. Try it a few times. Hopefully it will work.

Great image btw! Do you have a program or something?
