Hmmm.. interesting. I've thought about this for the longest time and made some experiments reguarding FSO's size limits. I think the best approach is to model a localized area of the DS. Theres no way anyone's computer can handle a high quality DS in its entirety.
I was thinking perhaps a 100km area of greebled madness, with a trench to play in. The Sky box can have a picture of the rest of the techscape and the arena could have an impassable boundary. Too bad FS2 doesn't have a landscape engine like Star Shatter.

Might be tricky to get the thing in-game, as it'd be many times bigger than the play volume....

I did, but because you're on Long Island, and that's further east, the time has already passed over there, and my posts are coming from the future. :nervous:
Either that, or you're in Stony Brook... they have the particle accelerator there, and have probably screwed with the time-space-continu-um... >.>

Well, if Omniscaper can do an asteroid landscape, why can't he do the DS trench or the DS surface strike?

well, the Death Star is 120 km in diameter, so why not just spring for the whole thing?

You read my mind Carl. Then I can make a mission that requires the player to keeping flying down the trench until it reaches the exhaust port!...... Just keep flying till you see it :)

we were thinking about using the new multi docking system for the DS (which should led to a better use of lods) but honestly we still have to work on it
