Title: VP packets
Post by: LeGuille on February 24, 2005, 09:19:06 pm
I tried finding VP Mage on this site, but failed.. will have to probably google it, or be instantly re-directed by the many Guru's present in this community. ;7

I do have one question, though.. if I havea .vp file containing all the mods within the packet, will that work as a single file FS2 MOD'd Campaign? I played Dues Ex Machina and I looked at the transports in View32 and saw the nice logo on the TC-TRI's, but never saw it in Mission...  So.... Do I need to make a complicated README file expla9ning all te damned MODs and where they need to go?

Thanks in Advance.

VPMage 0.8 (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=584745)

VP files are only package files; they work sort of like a directory. So you can place as many mods as you like inside a VP file, but in order to merge them you'd have to edit the ships.tbl and other files.

Karajorma's FAQ might have some information on how to start modding.

BTW:

You probably have a texture with a higher priority replacing it.

Does Deus Ex Machina come as a VP file? What's the name?
Where did you place it?
Are you using FS2_Open with the -mod switch?

um... ever heard of VPCS2 - which is fully featured including the ability to import files from other vps

Yeah but if you look at my post you'll see that I've replied to over 10,000 posts. Can't remember the links in all of them :D

Besides my main problem was not remembering VPCS 2. It was knowing where to get the latest version.

Yes, it came as a VP named, DEM.vp. And, I am using the crude HOTU version without any switches. I placed it in the directory -- or rather the same place the game was installed to.

Thought so. If you haven't downloaded the vp files from the FTP (or anywhere else for that matter)  and then deleted the contents of your data folder they will take precidence.

About the only thing you can do is copy the entire data folder and then use VPView to extract the contents of the DEM VP to Data. Once you're finished with it you can just delete it and replace it with the copy you made (having first copied your pilot file back over).

To be honest you'd be better off getting hold of the VP files from the FTP.

EDIT : Actually you could just back up the texture file that is on the TC-TRI and replace that. Much simpler. You'll need to do the above if you want to play something like Inferno though.

EDIT 2 : Or you could use FS2_Open make a folder called DEM. Put a folder called Data inside that and then extract the contents of the VP there. When you run with the -mod DEM switch the mod would run as higher priority than the contents of Data.

Still think you're better off getting the VP files though :)

Totally new to the HLP and the FS2 mods... seriously, I never knew people like you all existed.. it's like heaven for me.. For years I played FS1 and FS2, lost them and got the HOTU version.. happy again, I played it and found HLP through the links for the missing files ReadMe. so, really- I'm out of the modding loop...But as it is, I am trying to work on my new campaign's first chapter.

If you're FREDding check out the FRED Academy (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,28122.0.html). We'll teach you to make better missions in return for you working on our campaigns :)

I was suggested there by Goob. But thanks, Kara... I think I will make this first chapter in my campaign (about 10 missions or so), first -- then I will take part in the FREDucation experience. :-)... I think I'd like to see my own progress in my own storytelling, first... that way I can know when to pay attention to advice or not, hehe..

:) Fair enough. Check out that 13 FREDding Mistakes post on the campaign forum if you haven't already though :)
