how can I get rid of this box around the Ganymede?

They're bounding boxes, just select the faces or vertices that make them up and delete them.  Takes about to seconds.  (you'll have to make it a editable mesh and go to select verts or polys)

that is more likely the LOD, how did you get that model in there.

Can someone who knows how get rid of it on that and the Knossos in COB format? both have one and I can't finish a project untill I have them (it's been on hold for a while but the staff know what I'm on about).
