Hi Polyphonics that is ;) For Fun and possible SCP p1mpage video purposes ;)
Ok, I'm aproaching this like yu would a model, I've made the closest thing to the original I can, the speed needs a tiny bit of tweaking but it's pretty much a note-note copy of the original. As you will hear, it's a little different, especially without the video....
I'm going to build on this, and see what can be made, I'll keep you up to date how I'm doing ;)
http://www.aqsx85.dsl.pipex.com/FS-HiPoly.mp3
Enjoy :)
-
Liked your other one alot better. The sounds in this one are kinda "hollow" no real depth to them.
-
Yes, this is a note for note copy of the Video, which has surprisingly few drums. Most of it is punctuated out by Beam noises and engines, so you don't notice it ;)
It's particuarly this parts that sound 'hollow' that I need to change, particuarly the centre section, it's technically correct, but without the video, it sounds 'wrong'. I think they jump timing for that section, so I'll have to sort something else out.
This is just a starting point, I'll keep you updated :)
Edit : What I don't plan to end up with is just The Theme with different sounds. I'll be completely altering things in places etc ;)
Oh, and this was actually damn hard to get from one to the other, it's a rather.... odd piece of music as far as timing etc is concerned :shaking:
-
Awesome. :)
It doesn't sound a whole lot like the movie during the first part (the instruments are noticeably different.) But it is really good just the same - I got goosebumps listening to it. :D It gets a lot more similar during the last part.
Second time through I can spot and associate the notes with my memory of the intro music.
*Makes a new 'Flipside' music folder*
Edit: The Volition voices are a lot more "aah" than "ooh", that's partly what's throwing me off.
-
Nice. :)
-
Good job.. keep it up!
-
Sorry to say, I don't like it. Your other work was slower and had correct timing...strangely, this one has a distinct lack of proper timing, and the suddenness of the change of instruments is allright once or twice, but it occurs WAY too frequently here with the changes being too drastic.
Other than that however, it's not bad. I havent put it i the place of the original music in the vid yet, but perhaps its supposed to match up better?
-
Maybe hollow, but I like it
-
Thanks :) The problem is the music itself swaps between some 3/4 and 4/4 timing in the video, I've got a tendency to stay away from 3/4 and 7/16 and timings like that... they scare me :nervous:
What my aim is, is to use that as a basis for something similar but not identical to the Freespace movie, I doubt I'll ever be able to get it to fit accurately over the original Video even if I wanted to :(
-
3/4th is supposed to be a reasonably often used timing though, right? I mean, it is used for waltzes IIRC.
EDIT: You;re doing all of this with a synth only, right? I know it'd be hell over the web, but I can't help but feel that it might be better to find some RL musicians to record their parts. I wish I could help, but I don't think there is any place for an acoustic bass guitar in there. If there is, I'd be happy to record a part, but be warned, I'm bloody horrible and quite a n00b.
-
Yes, but I can't figure out whether the time jumps fro 4/4 to 3/4 or 7/8, I think it has a phase of each, which really makes editing and syncing stuff a pain :(
-
I'm not good enough at music to listen to a peace and recognise stuff like timing or tone-setting, but do you have this in either tabs or notes? I'd love to look at the parts themselves.

DINGGGGGG
DINGGGGGGGGGGGGG
DINGGGGG
tshhhh

I think what's missing is the chorus.
There were bass singers in the original too, that may account for the "missing depht".
-
Yeah, my one weak spot is choirs :( I only have a cheap, unregistered choir synth that doesn't work very well, whereas those voices have been done on a Fairlight or a Trinity or the like. I'll have a look through my collections and see what I can find :)
-
Needs a lot of fine-tuning, but that's a great start. :)
-
Ugh. It feels like something someone made in 20 minutes in a MIDI program. There is no richness or depth to the timbre, the instruments sound fake, the tempo isn't right at all, and there needs to be bass and percussion lines to underpin the music now that the engine whooshes and beam shots are gone.
-
That's more or less what I'm doing at the moment, as well as trying to think up a way round this speed/time sig changes ;)
Expect an update by the weekend :)
-
i sing bass guys, a good deep bass 2
FS2 Choir Assemble!
-
 Well, I've found a couple more options to play with now :)
One question, is it me, or if you watch the FS2 Intro movie enough does the [v] guy look like Elvis?
-
Now that I've listened to it, I'll agree with everyone here: your first was better, but this still has it's good points. The choir at the beginning felt slightly off, just because they didn't flow right into the music (starting abruptly), and the Manticore-Herc chase music was a little off, along with the drums. Still, it was amazingly well-done.

The V guy is perfect for that cutscene. :p
-
Ok, this is what I've done so far, it isn't finished, theres still another layer of strings etc to add, and please please don't tell me the ending is too abrupt, I haven't done that bit yet ;)
http://www.aqsx85.dsl.pipex.com/FS-HiPoly.mp3
I've at least managed to get the timing for the middle section, and changed sections here and there so they are more to how I would have chosen to do it ;)
I'll add another layer to this during the week, to fill out the more 'empty' sections, and add the ending next weekend :)
-
It's missing something...did you compose this with a keyboard, or in a MIDI program, like MODtracker?
I kind of liked the old version better, but I overwrote it with this one, so I can't compare 'em.
-
It was done on Midi synths, but I can see hear the bits here is sounds modded, it is partly the compresion, and partly the fact that Sample synths aren't actually all that dissimiliar to a kind of Mod-Tracker for non masochists ;)
It's still got another layer to go, and this ones getting a tough audience, bit I'll see how it sounds by next week :)
-
When I read "polyphonics" I thought it would be a polyphonic cell phone ringtone. That would be neat. :p
-
I LOVE it. Although, admittedly, it begins a tad slowly.

Ahh, that could explain it. It might be that you're adhering too well to the tempo. Or maybe it's just that it's a little slow. ;) It doesn't seem to be quite as in-your-face as the original intro.
-
For the record, Freespace choir voices came from Spectrasonics Symphony of Voices.
It's incredibly cool, I have it, it's so much fun to scan through all the samples and think "Hey I know that sample from Freespace!" I suppose the fact that I "choir-along" with FS2 music helps me recognise them..
Anyway, yeah, no FS choir sounds came from synths. The Spectrasonics sample cds are real voices from real choirs.
The website for the sample CD is here: http://www.spectrasonics.net/libraries/symphonyvoices.php
-
It's more laziness on my part to be honest, I have a pretty good collection of choir samples, but I'd have to tweak and adjust them etc etc to make them the right length, change at the right places etc. Many frustrating hours on Soundforge and Acid, but I may give it a go anyway ;)
-
Ok, this is my final attempt for now, tempo has been upped, second layer added, as well as an ending that's as close to the original timing as you're going to get ;)

I'm going to go back to doing Modelling soon I think, the music phase is over for a couple o' weeks ;)
-
me likes...a lot
-
Definately the best version you've done so far :)
-
:)
-
Much, MUCH better than the last one.
Two thumbs up.
-
Thanks! Glad you like :)
Well, I'm doing the TVWP sound stuff, or would be if I wasn't doing this, but then, I would be doing TI modelling if I wasn't doing that... Life as a modder is such fun ;) But If the SCP Video thingy ever gets underway, drop me a line, I'd love to have a crack at something that isn't so 'conforming' to the original ;)
-
That's almost dead-on. :D
-
AWESOME! 2 thumbs up! :yes2::yes: but i kinda miss the choir part.
-
Oh yeah, can you put it up for a download? i gotta put this on CD. :D
-
Wha? :wtf: It's right up there, Cobra...
-
it's not letting me save to disk.
-
Right click link, save target as.
-
D'OH!
I wanna make a CD collection of his songs :D
-
I copied it to the CD (had to be converted, i think it's a wav now) and it works!
-
oh yeah, i have one small suggestion. shorten the long note at the beginning by maybe 1 or 2 seconds. maybe it's just me, but it's a tad long.

EDIT: See ? You can add comments to your own post later. A forum isn't a chat room where you type whatever comes to your mind. Try to concentrate you thoughts in one post.

AH! MY EYES! TOO MANY PIXELS!
sorry... :nervous:
-
hehehe, Well, glad it got a good audience :)
I could shorten that note by a second or two, but it would mean remixing the whole thing again. I'd recommend getting something like Goldwave or something and just shorten and fade-in the intro note ;)
You know, I still listen to this and am amazed I actually managed to figure the thing out and get those timing without having to change tempo once throughout :D
-
heh, i gotta get this synthesizer... :D
