  Creating 3D models= Lightwave 6.5
  Texturing=hmmm...Lightwave I'd say
Rendering=3DSMax, easier: Lightwave is better once you learn it though.

err..neither

Maya or Softimage or Houdini if you're loaded with cash and need to dump it on a $10k+ software license!

Depends what you feel comfortable with.
I can tell you about max, but not LW

MAX has a massive user base and a large open-ended community.  its easy to use and can create stunning FX in the right hands.

Lightwave i really don't know about - ask darkshear, he uses it.

MAX is more used to create game content and commercials, LW is more geared toward feature films as i understand it.

It's hard to compare the two tho because they are quite different.  That and i never used one of them, hehe

I know Maya and Softimage are very good 3D Programs.

Only promblems with that is the price of the software and they need a NT OS system to run and i don't like Win NT 4 coz it can't play games, But win 2k doesn't like my computer. I can't win  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

you will find most mid end (MAX, LW) packages WILL run on 95/98/ME but not well.

they both fall over and crash alot mainly because win98 is terrible at managing system resources.

Maybe someone here could give you a hand getting 2k up and running?

I don't know, but send me the copy of whichever you decide not to use.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I'm running win95b and have never had a single problem with 3dsmax 3.1, it's exceptionally stable. Don't know about max 4 though, I guess it might take more system resources.

I have Win2k up to use my resources better, but that means I can't play FS2, B&W or IW2. Which pisses me off. I've been working on trying to get a Win2k/Win9x dual boot working but I just get a blank screen when I try to boot into 9x - apparently Win2k won't boot anything else unless it is on C:. I'm working on resolving it.

Wait a sec...I was just considering a dual-boot Win2k/WinME. I have ME now, on C: will Win2K not work if I install it on another hard drive? It would be probably on the E drive, since C and D are both partitions of my current drive.

But I'm getting sick of ME crashing all the time for stupid reasons.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

i'm on win2k only

Fs2 works fine so long as i dont run it in 32bit colour.

if you already have win9x installed, win2k should allow you to dual boot from a menu, just dont change the HD partition fo NTFS

and MAX isn't easier than lightwave.

You can get win 98 and win 2K to dual boot, but you have to have Win 98 installed first before you install Win 2k

Lightwave...hands down...

Err Lightwave mid range? Hmm..Don't tell that to anyone like Foundation Imaging, or Sony Image works, or any of the other TV/Film producing companies who use it :P

I still remember getting all excited when I saw the work done in Blade totally with Lightwave (The bodies disintegrating when killed by Blade).

Lightwave is a high end package...those who think it isn't need to ask why ILM converted it's particle system over for use on The Perfect Storms water effects, or why all the Voyager effects are done in Lightwave, Or why I (a pathetic little artist who does this as a hobby mostly) can whip out something like the podfighter in a few hours...

I have used Maya and Softimage...and off of the top of my head after using them all, there is only one thing I wish lightwave could do that Maya can...but that is it...

My two cents

Rob

Star Wreck V was made with 3DS MAX, Star Wreck VI was made with Lightwave. If you have the time I suggest you download them  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Just some more persuasion if you need it:

but switching to Lightwave 3D and learning the new software took its time. I had to redo all the scenes I'd rendered thus far, but I'm convinced this is the programme to use in order to create the biggest and best space battle in the history of Star Wreck. I've had no regrets thus far.
