Ok this may sound crazy, but what would you call the Ancients, because they’re know as the Ancients by us.
what would there race name be, or will they just be know as the Ancients, just like in Babylon 5 were the first ones are just called the first ones, not inculding the vorlons or shadows of course.

on what grounds?
*goes through FS fluff*

We actually know nothing about the ancients... It would be cool if there was a render of an ancient skeleton to examine, but I suppose that's too much to ask for... [/hint at volition]
Judging from the Knossos, they were a colorful species... probably intellectually motivated, as judged by the artistic look of the Knossos (either that, or it looks like their buildings)
personally, I'd like to see a render of one of the ancient sites Bosh plundered... I would like to see what the buildings look like, and if they were aquatic...
BTW; for one of you *smart* guys, what would the effect of the shivan super laser be on an aquatic society?
-
Hmmm...
You could probably duck the entire issue in the campaigns from the Ancient point of view by just using "We" for everything. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Depends on the power level. If we go by the FS1 fluff, it would come out to be dumping a bit under 12 gigatons worth of energy per shot....

looking at what the superlaser did in that render of it bashing vasuda prime..
it would probably vapourise the oceans and cause an unnatural amount of cloud, drastically altering the planets' climate (thats' if there were any oceans left by then)

Yeah, really, what would happen if all the water on Earth suddenly vaporised into clouds that rained down on Sahara or something? I mean, Vasuda Prime was a desert planet, and that amount of rain pretty much has to effect something.
But all the water eventually makes its way back to the oceans. So what happens to the deserts now?
I don't even have FS1, so someone tell me: did Vasuda Prime even HAVE any oceans? That's pretty vital for this reasonong (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
-
I don't think so... if there was oceans, there would be at least some places were there's no desrt, and the vasudan would live next to the coasts, anyway, not in the desert, exepted for some nomads...
well, if it rained on a desert, the sand would suck the water, I suppose, nothing else, but I'm not a geologist...
For the ancients... the knossos looks like it gots scales... Maybe there's a link with the ancient look, but when I'm looking at a building or a car, there's nothing that gives a clue on how would look like a human.

What we know about the Ancients from their technology is that they are built on the ashes of races before, much like the Terrans and Vasudans.
Overall "Ancients" is a broad term on many races before the alliance, the Knossos device in Gamma Draconis as well as the sub-space tracking technologies were both based on theories developed by earlier races.
From what we know of ancient design in the Knossos, a guess on their environment would lead to aquatic hues. Their hulls have an almost scaly appearance, which reflects more than likely either animals they are kindred with, or part of themselves.
Vasudan culture is influenced a great deal by the ancients from what can be assumed, and so more than likely the ancients were very symbolic and their heiroglyphs were mimiced by the early Vasudans either stumbling on ruins or encountering live ancients.
Overall, we know that he had to have had bipedal capacity as well as "hands" of some form, this can be assumed by the fact that the data core storage on Altair was easily found and accessed by the Vasudans, as well as the equipment as easily recognizable as such.

Uh. Judging from the Knossos I'd say that their ships would look nothing like the current ships for the Ancient mod thingy. The mod's ships look scaly and bluey purples. The Knossos is dark and pointy, sorta futuristic goth, not "We are big fishy reptiles"ish.
-
Well, ace, who says they're bipedal? what about quadpedal(word?)? I wanna see a race of minotaurs taking over... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

They have *at least* two legs, we know that.
I'd say they would have either two or four. (however it's a usual trend for upright creatures to have higher intelligence, so more than likely two, usual being the key word)
I agree that the ancients mods that we see commonly are nothing like what their ships would truly be.
First of all, from what Volition has said, the ancients have a technology base only a decade or so more advanced than the Terrans and Vasudans during the great war.
No beam cannons, flak guns, shields, literally slightly above great war technology.
Their advancement was in the form of Knossos technology which was salvaged by an earlier race which they stumbled upon the ruins of more than likely. (overall the ancients found the basic theories and finished it, much like the Terrans and Vasudans did this with sub-space tracking technology)
Overall, the combat tactics done by the ancients I believe were not fighter, bomber, and cruiser style combat.
More than likely, ancients vessels behaved more like the ships in Independence War.
This I say simply because since the Terrans, Vasudans, and Shivans use capital ships and fighters doesn't mean that everyone has to (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

how do you know all this

They could have beam cannons...for all we know, the Shivans got basic beam tech from the ancients, and improved it into the monster it became. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) Definitely no shields though.

I would argue against this..... from the FS1 monologues, we get the impression that the Ancients were very expansionistic, but also had not run into anyone they couldn't easily defeat. So combattech-wise, they may have only been a decade or two ahead of the GTVA (primitive beams, perhaps) but in other fields, such as subspace, they may have been much more advanced. Nothing spurs technological development like a war, look at how fast it progressed during the Great War/T-V war. But such tech is geared towards waging war, not towards exploring.
-
I honestly think they were consiterably more advanced than the FS1 Tarrens and Vasudans, just based on the echnology they have left us and the vast empire they managed to atain.

I beleive the ancients were highly culturally advanced and had a great knowledge of subspace.
Anyway - i'm working on a few bits and peices but as soon as i extract my fingers from all the pies they're in you might see some images (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

They had a great deal about sub-space by expanding on races from before them, much like the Terrans and Vasudans now do.
The fact that their technology is not as advanced as many here believe came out of the horses' mouth at Volition.
More than likely, their combat technologies included systems similar to the Avenger, but they did not have defensive or offensive systems capable of even puncturing Shivan shielding, this is known.
Despite warring with dozens of races, their empire more than likely collapsed in a matter of weeks. (much like the alliance would have fallen if it was not for GTI previous experience with Shivan technology which allowed for shield systems to be engineered quickly)

Hem, something always make me smile: it is said in the fs1 cutscene that they slained lots of civilisation that didn't evolved as fast as their own... Ok, so everybody thinks: woo, they must be very advanced!!! Now imagine the GTA from the begining of the first shivan war. Not that powerful right? Now throw them on thousands of civilisations, ot the vasudans, not the shivans. Stone, Iron age civilisation, that doesn't know anything about subspace, space battles, technology? That's how I see what happened. They crushed civilisations that didn't reach space technology. Not always, anyway, because we know that they met other space faring species (the fact that they were not surprised, at first, to meet the shivans). They were more evolved than the others, but not more than the shivans.
