Title: What do you look for in a weapon mod?
Post by: Fineus on June 01, 2001, 12:02:00 pm
Assuming you could have a new weapon of any type supported by the FS2 engine, to be mounted on a capship (not fighter) what would it be? Turrets, Flak, Beams, Missiles...?

(the answer matters for what I have in mind). Thanks  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Originality - sure, but what general type? thats the bit I need to know...

I don't know... beams are cool, but a bit overdone. Plasma blobs are rarer, and they can look nice. But I guess I like missiles  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Rail guns are nice.

Railguns are pretty cool  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Personally, I wanted to make a proper pulse laser cannon for capships, i.e. with a big muzzle flash and a big BOOM!!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif). And also with a big explosion for every shot on target (regardless of damage), to make it look really spectacular  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Basically, something spectacular.

So we're talking turret weapons here?

I agree, V could've done so great stuff with turrets, their amongst the most versatile of the weapon types...I'll have a little play around tonight I think  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I wanted to create a modified huge turret which used a beams warmup glow, and then fired a bright white 'pulse' at enemy ships (the afore-mentioned pulse laser).

and alter the targeting laser into a purple/white ancients laser.... hmm, i'll have to get back to the weapons.tbl and play  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Siege Cannon!!! But I don't think that's possible in FS2.

Missiles are nice too. I once made one that was intended to be mounted on civilian vessels. It didn't do much damage but had a powerful shockwave. It was fun to shoot a pair of those into a fighter or bomber formation and watch as they are all thrown around by the explosion  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Question:

Couldn't you mock a rail gun by changing the graphic of one of the laser turrets. Change it from that big green blob to a metal slug graphic (or something like that). Then increase the blob/slug's velocity and damage factors in the .tbl. And then assign this new rail gun weapon to a cap ship's beam turret (which kind of already looks like a cannon nozzle).

Would this work (I'm just guessing)? Or has it been done somewhere before?

Joe.

Well... if you made a beam with a very short life and high damage you'd have something very much like that. the only problem with that is that you don't get the 'bolt' of energy moving between turret and target, but an energy weapon really shouldn't look like that anyway. Railguns would be pretty easy to  make, and could add a whole new element to capship battles. An anti-cap railgun should have a pretty limited field of fire, like 30 degrees or something small like that, but would have much superior range over a beam cannon, since the projectile is just going to keep going till it hits something (at 9000fps or so =P).

Turbolasers. Make capship laser turrets something to fear-faster shots and rapid fire.

Turbolasers, I like it! I've already created a map that looks kinda like the Rebel turbolaser image. I think I can work with that and change it from what I had in mind into a turblaser of sorts...

That would make laser turrets MUCH more useful and a threat comparable to flak and missile turrets.
Title: What do you look for in a weapon mod?
Post by: Sushi on June 01, 2001, 02:29:00 pm
Exactly. As it is, some turrets are fairly dangerous(like the ones on transports) especially with the Velocity Mod, but you'd think that big capships would have laser weapons that are more dangerous, not less.

Of course, a large-scale laser blob that did serious damage to other capships would look cool too...

I thought about making a larger object for an anti-capship railgun, but got caught up in my other projects  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

No, these are ideas - to see what people would respond well to. Theres no point in making a beam if everyone just thinks "oh no, not another beam".

Well, there's plenty of stuff in the tbls you can play around with. And various parts of the FS2 graphical engine that can be exploited to mimic new stuff. Like your rain beams... why don't you bring them out?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I've done a basic shell / mass driver cannon thingie, it's at http://uk.geocities.com/gunnery_control/downloads.htm ("http://uk.geocities.com/gunnery_control/downloads.htm") (contains shell.pof, test mission, and copied weapons.tbl)

It's used for missile turrets only, though.

It's not great, the explosions, sounds etc need sorted out properly, but anyone who wants to play around with it is more than welcome     (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Well, here's one... You know the upgraded energy weapons from Cataclysm? (for those that don't- a big red blob of energy that homes in onto it's target)
I made one of those, except blue... although I can change that, and will when I get the chance. It's really meant for turrets on capships, but I have come up with a convincing excuse to have it as a secondary weapon on a fighter  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
I'll see if I can track down some pics, if anyones interested.

I don't think anyone mentioned this one already...

Rapid-fire beams. They power up, and then Launch off about forty beam pulses...in a matter of seconds. The machine gun of beam weapons.

Make them slashers for a REALLY interesting effect.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

As for the textures, they're really cool.  I've got a couple of my own though, you can see one of my older ones on the surface there.  I still haven't decided how I'm going to implement them on the new models, I may not use them at all (I do like green + white though)
