Investors in space flight industry contribute $3,000,000 to TrekUnited
Money pledged to fund a fifth season of Star Trek: Enterprise
Posted by: Chris R. – 03.01.05
TrekUnited.com today announced that three anonymous contributors have stepped forward with a $3 million pledge toward the campaign to ensure a fifth season for the recently cancelled Star Trek: Enterprise.
Paramount Network Television and the United Paramount Network (UPN) jointly announced on Feb. 3 that this would be the last season of Enterprise on UPN. Fans pooled their skills, time and finances to form TrekUnited.com in an effort to fight the decision by raising money themselves to pay for a fifth season of the on-going space adventure.
The benefactors also added a statement explaining why they believe this campaign deserves such a substantial contribution:
"We think Star Trek and especially its latest incarnation, "Enterprise" is the kind of TV that should be aired more often. The people responsible at Paramount think this is just a show and we want to tell them, it is not. We are in the commercial space flight industry and would like to testify that at least one out of two of all the actual entrepreneurs involved in this industry has been inspired by Star Trek; and we are not only good at watching TV sci-fi , we are also good at writing checks, big checks. The people airing this kind of TV have a responsibility; inspiration. Star Trek has inspired us, and particularly Enterprise, with its superb theme song that tells so much about our struggle to move space travel forward and closer to the public, this inspiration is so self evident, that Virgin Galactic has ordered a 5-sub orbital ship fleet from Scaled Composites, a 100 million dollar investment, and the first one being built is going to be christened ‘VSS Enterprise.’ Now doesn’t that ring a bell in Paramount’s ears? Now, canceling the series so bluntly, for the sake of just ratings, tells very much about the kind of thinking going on inside Paramount. If we thought the same way, Paul Allen would have never funded the SpaceShipOne program. Sir Richard Branson would never have funded Virgin Galactic and Space Adventures would never have put two space tourists aboard the International Space Station. Instead, we would all be at home watching Survivor or some other reality TV show. Enterprise needs to be renewed, for the sake of fan loyalty, for being quality TV, for bringing imagination and hope for a better future to our homes, but over all that, for inspiring us so strongly that we have fought all our adult lives to bring that future closer to our children and to us."
TrekUnited Director Tim Brazeal also stated contributions like this one brings the campaign much closer to its goal. "We are overwhelmed at the generosity of these fellow Star Trek fans," Brazeal said. "We believe that Enterprise deserves a future. With contributions like the one from these generous individuals and those of millions of other Star Trek fans worldwide, we will succeed."
Under the terms of the TrekUnited charter, the campaign will be able to give the money to anything that will guarantee a fifth season of Star Trek: Enterprise.
That makes $6,055,000 :D
We're getting along juuuust fine. just a little more and Enterprise will finally be in the hands of the fans and then B&B can be fired by... us! :drevil:

And has anyone actually offered to use the money?
-
Cool
on a side note why do companies like Paramount or Warner Bros not support sci-fi like it should be?
-
yay! we almost have enough to make one eppisode!!!

It doesn't make them enough money. Simple as that; When celebrities pants fall down XVI is usually cheaper to make, has as many or more viewers per $, and arguably is more likely to attract advertisers.
There's a sort of almost-stigma about sci-fi, particularly Star Trek, to advertisers I think; they worry about being linked to a nerdy over-obsessive stereotype. Either that or the audience generally isn't vacuous enough to easily fall for their advertising, unlike that of Americas Funniest Medical Malpractices. Probably both.

Too cerebral? ;)

Actually, the budget for S4 was 1.6 million per episode, as opposed to the 2 million of the previous seasons (and guess what, S4 was MUCH better despite the downsized budget). :) Ofcourse, that's without comercials etc. this money would probably allow the production and promotion of 3 episodes.
Hey, they could simply extend S4 with a few eps and i'll be happy as well :D

Too cerebral?
Most science fiction is definitely not cerebral. Like every other genre, science fiction is 90% trash. The truly insightful literature is hard to dig out, and receives little attention. This is especially true in science fiction because the nerds steal the attention with their inane obsessions, dumbing down a legitimate artistic form.

You didn't get the reference... gargh...

I got it. ;)

I don't really find Enterprise all that good anywho.
Maybe just one or two episodes to sum up the ending would be nice. But meh.

Everyone who says ENT sucks or is 'meh' hasn't been watching S4. Anyone who has and still says it sucks, is about as biased as a Man United fan trying to cheer for Arsenal. :p

When all that money stops coming in and they realise how much they got, you really think its going into continuing the series? Greed is a very persuasive force...
Although I don't like Enterprise, I'm all for the fans actually trying this and applaud them from getting so much money already. The best would be that they actually do manage to fund an episode. Then I will seriously be happy. Not that they're making another Enterprise episode, but that the fans actually made a significant difference and contributed to what they believe in.
So keep it up.

I think enterprise could be a good show, alright the first few seasons where not very good, but towards the end of the season with the Xinidi(sp) it started to turn around for me, i really liked it the the enterprise got the Sh*t kicked out ot it. By far it has had more action than most of the other ST, cept DS9

the new season dosen't start until 8th in the uk

We should request that it be given to the Sci-Fi channel to produce, then aired by ABC on the 1:00am CST slot on weekdays, then a 2-hour re-air @ 10:00-12:00pm CST on Sundays. Everyone who is up at that time is usually going to want tosmething to do with thier late night insomniation! Besides, everyone could watch it on Sci-Fi right after Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis... I'm sure the Sci-Fi channel would be more then happy to take it over.
-
No. Sci-fi's money should be spent on BSG.
-
I think by "BSG" you really mean "Andromeda." :D
-
As much as I like Star Trek, I must say that Battlestar Galactica is better (but thats a hard choice). Although I havent seen many episodes of season 4 Im just happy that for the first time in a long time, science fiction is becoming a greater product.
The days of Alien Dracula from Space 3 is over! :D
-
Andromeda can 'stick it where the sun don't shine'. they are beyond hope.
Anyway, money should be spent on both Trek and a new B5 movie (or even a new series if the universe allows us to have a moment of joy).

Hey, Stargate: Atlantis isn't just Alien Dracula from Space... it's much more sophisticated! ;)
