Title: Student arrested for writing stories about.. zombies.
Post by: Zuljin on March 03, 2005, 03:34:50 am
I found this over at Machall when reading the columns there.

http://www.lex18.com/Global/story.asp?S=2989614&nav=EQlpWjof

Thats just messed up :wtf:
I've been writing those kinds of stories for years.
With much more details about things happening around me (usually involves any number of things, but violence and deaths are in abundance.) and I admit I've gotten a couple of odd looks from my teachers at times.
But I've never been called down for it, arrested, immediatly sent to the shrink and been told I'm ****ed up in the head, and I was planning a school massacre.
Since when did you go around arresting students who just had a little too wild imagination?

[/rant]

Anyway, discuss.

edit: spelling mistakes

Yeah. It's an isolated incident until it happens again. And again. And when you see, no one's writing anything about schools anymore in fear of being arrested, but it didn't help to stop terrorism at all.

That is, unless some sense is beaten into the state's lawmakers heads and they do something to change the wording of the law.

Nonesense.  Clearly the system works perfectly - how many zombie attacks have there been in the last year?  None.  That's a 100% drop on the previous year*.

On a side note, would anyone like to buy a tiger-deterrent rock?

*previous year total = 0

It's actually 0/0, which is either zero, infinite or undefined, depending how you look at it. :p

NaN hactually.

But 0 * 1 = 0, so the previous total of 0 was equal to 100% times the current total.

But you said a drop of 100%, which is a percentage change.  And the formula for that is (new value - old value)/(old value)*100%.  Therefore 0/0 percent. :D

*adjusts title accordingly*

drop = decrease
amount of drop = 0
0 = previous year (0) * 1 (100%)

Thus, drop is of an amount equal to 100% of the previous value

It's 0% of the previous year, but it's a 0/0% change (whether increase or decrease) from the previous year.  That's the difference.

I think I may have killed this thread... :nervous:

But '100% drop' is clearly semantically identical to 'drop of 100%'

(in the future, the internet will gaze upon threads like this.  Not the abortion and political ones, oh no - the ones about zombie deaths in American schools, mushy peas, and people killed by snowballs)

Yes.  But "100% drop" and "drop of 100%" are logically equivalent to "downward change of 100%".  Which requires the change formula. :p

Yes, indeed; a downward change equivalent to the value of 100% of the previous value, i.e. new = old - (100% * old).

Your country is f*cked. When the zombies do attack, you'll have no defence - all the people running away and screaming "Help, the zombies are coming!" will get arrested for terrorism!

Funny.  Two years ago I was nearly expelled for using the pen name "DeathBringer."  And it wasn't a school assignment, but rather a personal poem I wrote in a folder I didn't allow others to read from.  I was targeted because I was an outsider, and therefore a threat.

Even more funny was that the principal didn't see anything wrong, but had to do something because of the pressure the school's resident pig was putting on him.  This pig is the very image of corruption, too.  His son sells drugs out of his house, he takes bribes, and is very much a racist.

The over-zealous conservitive christians push thier agenda.
Then the filibustering radical liberal red-diaper doper babies push thiers...AND NOTHING GETS DONE about ANYTHING.

And I sit here, trying not to look at the country I live in, be lead by a Texas tourniquet for the pansies. I mean.. when I had to vote this year, my choices were: A Broken Record and a Sheep in Wolf's clothing.

I so hope the Zombies come soon. [/irritableness]

Bah, Goob is right, no need for maths to find out:
if it was 0 and it is still 0, there's no drop. If it was 1 and it was still 1, there would be no drop. Same deal :p
On such matters where no negative is possible, you can't drop any further once you've reached the floor :D

And about the zombies and isolated case from Carl... Mmh... Principle of precedency (sp? ). If the guy is charged for the case and found guilty, wait, you zombie writer pawns :p ( haven't actualy read the article, I'm on uni connection wich speed is... zombi'ish :p )

Oh, and Thief3 zombies would win since they can run :p

Got it. Just kidding, just kidding. I'm sorry if it looked little rash. I only found it very strange that student was arrested only just because he wrote something up....And since because I'm Finnish, I really don't understand US-Canada "affairs" to their fullest.

Being a Brit I'm aware it's because Canada still swears allegiance to our crown, and it also resisted in his/her name an invasion by the US during the early days of her independence.

Not really..how much is a 100% oncrease of 0...0
A kazilllion % increase....zero again..
million x 0 = 0

So. 0 zombie cases the previous year, 0 zombie cases this year.

Quite TECHICHLY, you can call it a percentage increase or decrease of whatever magnitude... Doesn't make much sense, but still...
