Ok, perhaps I may seem a bit dull for asking, but i didn't really see any install procedure anywhere...
Basically I've downloaded all the shinemaps and glowmaps packs, the launcher and so on, but how do I actually install those 'Maps? It just extracts to a bunch of textures and i've got no idea what to do with them....any help?
Well that's about it, otherwise excellent stuff so far, at least the launcher works nice for me :D

Just put them in your Freespace 2 'data' directory; I believe they'll be loaded and used by default (if not, check that the specular and glowmap bits in 'graphics' in the launcher are checked).

Hang on a sec. Exactly which pack did you get? If you're talking about Lightspeeds stuff then Aldo's advice is reasonable enough.
If you're talking about the media.vp files (eg mv_effects.vp etc) just shove them in your main Freespace 2 folder as these don't need to be unpacked to work.
Also if you're using the media.vp files you'll probably want to take a look here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,29938.msg612048.html#msg612048)

Hmm well the packs I have are GlowLTH-build12.0, GlowLTL-build12.0, and ShineLT-build20.0. I've also got the Media_vp pack installed, and that works just fine. Considering there are several hundred dds, ani and so on files extracted from the glow and shine packs, is it a good idea to just shove all that into the data folder itself?
Sorry if i'm not making much sense :P

You don't need to extract anything from the files ending *.VP, if that's what you're doing....
You're fine shoving the DDS / ani / etc into data, though.
-
I think those have to be placed inside data/maps.
As for the vp files, they belong to FS 2 main directory
-
The locations for the files from Lightspeeds downloads are a little complex.
anything ending in .pof can safely be put in the Data\models folder.
anything ending in glow.xxx or shine.xxx can be put in Data\maps.
Can't remember what would be left after that's done. There's some stuff that should go in other folders.
-
Anything ending in .tbl should go in /Data/tables.
(IIRC LS did put some tbls in there, right?)

I knew I was forgetting something. :)

Best not to use the GlowLTH, as its VERY memory intensive. If you had a dual-CPU system with 2+GB of DDR-RAM and one of the 512MB video cards currently being shown off, you could probably swing it, but otherwise, sitck with the GlowLTL. If you're got a mediocre system, then don't bother with the Glow packs. Just use the non-ani glow textures included with the ShineLT pack.

I have an 1.6 P4 + Geforce 2 - Ti + 512 RDRam - this system could stomach the low quality ani glowmaps.
If you have the bandwith it's worth a try.
