This thread is a re-start of the "Utility Freighter" one that's buried in pages of HLP history.
sorry I haven't updated in a while, i had some issues with Homework. (don't ask)
anyway, take a look at the latest pics.
notice the details on the guns and engines. I kinda evened out the R2 unit, and added the tuby thing on it.
-
some objective critique? Make the thinnest part of the laser cannons (before the semi-circle diffusion vanes) longer. The laser focal rods (forward of the diffusion vanes) should be longer too. Other than that, a good start!!! I like the detail on R2 so far...he is so often neglected!
-
uh... look at this pic, from like 3 months ago.
see the difference? :D
-
Hey, great progress!!! I never doubted that it was hard and productive work...I was just offering suggestions for improvement...was not in any way trying to slander your work or progress. I'm sorry if you took it as such.
-
nah, i just wanted to show you the improvement :D :D
is this long enough?
-
yep!!! that's about right...except...the smallest cylinder should be the one lengthened, not the medium thickness cylinder
--sorry, big Star Wars fan...;-)
You're absolutely right...big improvement!! I wish I had the time to get into this stuff!! I'm already impressed! you obviously have the attention to detail that it takes to make great models like I've seen here in the past!
-
meh, i have an Xwing toy for reference :D
and I actually did lengthen the little cannon points, but if i move the points over too much it'll look weird.
aren't we all SW fans? i have the special edition on DVD, plus the original VHS videos :p

Cobra: Work on the body of the ship. It's still just a stretched cube from the looks of it.

CRAP! MORE TIMEWARPS! I HATE THE ****ings!!
*ahem* that's actually the best i can do for right now, Raa. if i get an inspiration on how to fix it, i'll redo the body ;)
-
Oh man...VHS...YES!!! LoL...I remember when I was introduced to SW...VHS taped from network TV:-) For years I saw ESB from the point when Luke escaped from the Wampa. When I finally saw the whole version, I thought it was some 'new' beginning they'd done or something;-) Hey, I was like 8 years old, what can I say:-D

Heh heh...being 'Red Assed' in Aggieland (Texas A&M) means you have a lot of school spirit, and whatever you do you do hard core;-)
-
i was 6 when i heard about the THX remastered ones. those are the ones I have. the DVD is MUUUUUCH better. every little detail is shown. IT IS SO COOL. especially the bonus material. :D
-
is this better, guys? the front I mean. wanna see how you guys think before i redo the nose.

Glad to see you're sticking with it Cobra.

This might help you. (http://www.rpgplanet.com/starwars/pics/xwing.jpg)

The older version's nose was better. Don't make it flat.
-
uh, actually, I haven't done the nose yet. I'm re-doing the body, and the nose as well.
and col. fishguts, that does help, but only to a certain extent. the toy has every little detail (except for the R2 unit :D)

Here it means you've been brutally raped by burly convicts, but each to their own...........

+1 for aldo
-
ooh! page from that book ^_^ i love that book!
as for aldo: ...wtf? that would be what it means literally. *blinks**shoots aldo*
-
hmm. i'm trying to make a "snub-nose" like from the actual movie, etc, but I can't make the faces.
-
What's the polycount?
-
dunno if Blender even tells...
-
There must be a way to know if. A modelling program without any options to tell you the polycount is like the Easter Bunny without a basket with eggs in it.

That'd be the Easter bunny after easter, then? :p
Um, I believe blender does have a face-count display somewhere, but it's quite well hidden. IIRC it doesn't actually give a triangulate or give a triangulated count, albeit I last used blender several years ago.
-
Well, I just found out how many vertices and faces I have, but i can't tell how many polys.
Vertices: 2502
Faces: 2797
-
Faces = Polies.
-
:eek2: i have almost 3000 polys... is that good or bad?
-
Sounds a bit high for what you have there; I'd suggest it's the cylindrical parts, you should look at cutting down them a wee bit (focus on the inside parts; those are likely to be less visible and thus require less detail).
Faces.... might be higher than that in actuality, as FS2 triangulates everything on display (NB: traingulation reduces the model to be completly comprised of triangles; this is because triangles cannot bend and are thus perfectly flat, which cannot be guarenteed of shapes with more points/edges)

...I don't get it
;)

well... Aggies tend to be farm/mechanic type people that like football* and welding. Generally. HLPers tend to be hacker/nerd type people that like screwing with computers and the internet. Generally. There are, of course, exceptions on both sides. I just never thought I'd see these two groups, er... overlap.
*that's rugby for you Brits, not soccer:p
-
Well, guess you've never met any Aggie engineers;-) (not that I am one)
but I hear ya! lol
-
uh, guys? shut up. :doubt:
-
Oops...sorry chief. Don't you just hate it when off-topic retards hijack your thread? I know I do!!
Seriously though...hope your XWing's coming along well!
-
I dug up Jake Logan's Xwing for comparison. chek it.

well, actually, there aren't a whole lot of inside parts in an X-Wing.
-
Try to make details on the main part :D
-
heh.
anyway, i made a temporary nose for the xwing. yes, i know it's ugly, but that's just a placeholder for now.
-
STOP THE PRESSES! New nose, and less ugly looking. should i keep this nose? this is the best i can do for now.
-
anyone have any suggestions on what to add?
-
The cockpit could be more distinct.
-
that i'm not sure how...
-
Triple posts are generally frowned upon, Cobra :p
That said, select the faces, bevel at 89 degrees (You prolly can't do 90), then sweep the new face, and then move that in a bit. It makes support struts...
-
um, blender doesn't have a bevel option.
-
Select the verts, press e, move to wherever you want the bit to stick out to. Basic Blender modding technique. :p
Also, keep in mind that Blender has a lot more functionality than it appears. I've been using it for about 3-4 years now, and there are still new techniques and functions i find. My advice in that regard is to never assume blender doesn't have a certain function until you find proof that it doesn't. ;)
As model advice, the power of blender comes from how easy it is to manipulate the mesh on a verticie by verticie basis. From what i can tell, you're barely using that power with this mesh.
Look into editing parts on a verticie level rather than manipulating primitive objects.
The next stage is to build ships practically face by face, or at least area by area. Once you get the hang of that, you'll find that any sort of details, shapes, greebles etc. are possible, and the whole model 'blends' (;)) together far better than it otherwise would.
-
Try to add form on your main part like this :
http://img177.exs.cx/img177/4582/xwingsmoothnose5em.jpg
And don't forget the twin Proton Torpedos Launcher.
-
Anyone would think this is an X-Wing model competition...
<_ _>
*Discreetly opens Max*
-
:blah:
Better not show the X-wing I made three years ago.
-
(http://luigi30.com/microwing.jpg)
The GTF Xwing hijacked by NTF operatives and flown from the GTD Microwave to the NTC Toaster.
-
:wtf:
-
uh, is that MY old xwing? THAT'S COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL. :p
come on, topace, show us. :D
-
I no longer have that model. However, I believe I can show you the X-wing model the SWC is currently using.
-
Here you go, this is not the actual model, but an X-wing, anyway.
-
the swc team should use the guy who made his on TS when i was making mine. what was his name? :nervous:
-
Darksaber? We have his X-wing, but I don't have a texture for it on my HD. I can show you a wireframe view or untextured view, if you want.
-
Cobra -> it's me who have done the X wing in the same time :D
But now, with the hard work i have this time I can't finalize the model.
The actual model have more than 2000 errors when converting the model into POF with CVS.
