I know it sounds like advertising but it's not. A couple of months ago I started my website where I put up my pics and stuff and re-designed it a lot of times. Now I think I have something decent and I want to show you. It's all written in french, but you should be ok browsing the site itself.
The design is all made in basic HTML and drew it all on GIMP. I was thinking of making it in flash, but since I don't have much time to work on flash and install all the stuff on my website I didn't do it! *sigh* how lazy I am!
So what do you think about it? (http://pmxa.spouing.com)

The colors are downright ugly, the thing is unreadable because of them - I had to scroll my mouse to check if that blue text was actually hyperlinking to something (The "Wallpapers/Designs/Whatever" section, etc.)
Also, not only is it unreadable, it only takes up 1/4th of my screen, because I run on 1280x1024 and not on 640x480
The Dark Blue on Black is the thing that kills it the most though. Or it makes me want to kill myself. I got so distracted by the pain, I don't know anymore
I'm going to go put needles into my eyes now, it's gonna feel better.
Also, your page doesn't suck that much, but I had a bad day. It still sucks though. I'd stab it repeatedly if I were you. With the knife Rambo uses.
Sorry.
Again, it's not that bad.

The blue's too dark. The page is small, I run at 1280x1024 also.
You might also want to find a way of integrating your images into your site, rather than opening a new window with them in it. You could use a PHP script to make a template for all images, or you could use Javascript to open a new window that was the same size as the image (although people's popup blockers might catch it if they're sloppy with the settings). I find it a little annoying when a dark website pops up a great big, glaring, white page in a new browser window when I click something, when I'm browsing at night. :p
-
For the web page's size it's cuz I receive requests to make it smaller so I optimized it for 800x600. Usually I run at 1024X768. But I'll try to make the stuff appear in a window the same size of the pic.
Thx BD for your comments. Did you wanted me to feel like I wanted to kill myself too? I'm sorry if you had a bad day but please don't do this again. I can assume critics, but at this point...
Instead of stabbing it with a knife and letting it down, I simply retouched the design. It's less dark and more lisible, and for those with greater resolutions, it should appear bigger.
-
I run at 1024x768 and size wise its fine. (well I've seen it after you fixed some things)
I like blue personally, it looks alright. I've seen worse pages thats for sure.
Still could use a bit of work though. :)
I can't read it though, its not in english... :p ...hehe

Overall the website looks ok but I would recommend changing some of your design and layout ideas to improve the visual/usable aspect.
This color indicates the issue - This color indicates a possible solution
- The color blue is overly used. A color scheme generator can be found at wellstyled (http://wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html) which may help you select a more aesthetically appealing color scheme for your users, I would also suggest selecting colors that don't saturate the page.
- The background pattern is distracting. Maybe just using the background color as is or using a pattern other than text.
- The contrast of the text on the background is great but the text size is too big it should be around 12px :D
- There is no space between the content and the interface art. This could be fixed by adding padding/margins to the content area.
nitpicky stuff- Your using an image map for the menu. You could use CSS and even include a rollover color change for text/background.
- Tables are outdated for layout. CSS could easily be used for your site, and while your using all this CSS the site would load much faster as well.
- Too much space between menu items. Could be fixed with CSS if the menu was in CSS.
An english alternative would be nice :), there is some nice artwork you got there
-
I like the site, the colors are good. Let me guess, the menu font is Alien? :p
-
Much better now
Also, get rid of the BraveNet counter. It's defiling the entire thing.
-
My problem is that it's in French. :sigh:
-
Okay so i'll work on that when I get some spare time (I had a week off so I had plenty of time doing it but now it's sunday and school is restarting this week). I'll do my best to translate the web page. Btw, I you want to use the shoutbox in english, feel free to do it I can understand english (no seriously? ;)) I know absolutely NOTHING about CSS so I'll read about it and try to do something with it. My web page knowledge hardly stops at HTML.
Yes Primus, the menu font is Alien! :p
-
Okay so here's what I done now:
-Translated the web page in english (not the best translation since my 1rst language is french)
-Changed the background (still some work to do tho...)
-Fixed some display bugs in the drawings section
The new menu is not yet done, but you should be okay browsing the site.
-
The background pattern looks great  and being able to read it now makes it even better :)

I'm back from my break! I redrew (again) all the web page with a new color scheme. It's still blue, but no longer dark. I also integrated my first javascript for the menu! I hope you like it!

Wou! It's great. Cool. :)
-
In my constant insatisfaction of my own work I re-drew the whole site again. This time it's less packed, more spaced and it has a simplier interface than before. Even put up CSS in it! Thx Xelion for making me discover that powerfull tool!

Welcome :D.
Certainly is a different look to your previous version. The contrast is much better
