Title: Modelling Contest Vote Thread
Post by: Shrike on May 29, 2001, 05:48:00 pm
Alright people, all you non-HLP people get to vote on your favorite models.

Choose your favorite basic and advanced models, and post your choices here.

For examples:

Advanced:  The Idiran Pleasure Yacht by Bob the Idiran
Basic:  Box 'o Fun by Hoopy the crackmunkey

Easy!    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Oh yes, if you're not sure what a model is (advanced/basic) make a judgement call.

Before I vote I'd like to say Kudos to everyone who entered. I found it very hard to vote with so much quality work. Well done everyone.

Advanced: Darkshear's Podfighter
Basic: Psycho's GTVDn Bastion

Someone's gotta give aldo an award for being the bumpiest person around here  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Yes, great work everyone  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

it was a lot of fun seeing so many new and quality designs  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Advanced: Ophion-Class Experimental Destroyer  - Tango Drinker

Basic: Autarch- class Dreadnought - Starwing
       Vindicator-class destroyer - Shrike

My three favorites in a group of great work..

Sorry on the split on the basic...I like em both...if it comes down to a tie between them I will make up my mind, if not, oh well deal with it :P

Come on people, don't vote for your own stuff.  It's bad manners and rather defeats the purpose.  Any own votes will be discounted.  And make it clear which category you're voting each for.

Well I entered to join a contest to put my models up agaisnt other and see if they could hold their own...
in the spirit of competition it is just considered bad form to vote for yourself...hints at bad sportsmanship and unfair play...
the point is the competition, and not the winning...only 2 models are going to win here...if everyone votes for themselves it will be a dead tie between everyone with one vote :P
That should be fun

4 models.... the HLP staff makes our votes as well.  but we do that after, so we don't get the same model winning twice.  It ends up with the top 4 models.

How many of you failed kindergarden?  Do you actually understand what sportsmanship is all about?  This isn't elections for leadership, this is a little contest to see who has cool ship designs.  This is more akin to a sporting contest, where you are entering simply for the sake of putting your entry up against those of other people.  Do you understand what I'm getting at here?

Yes it is and yes it is.

I assume people entered this contest to be judged by others.  Out of your models, the ones you entered are your best, you've already decided that.  So does it harm you that much to ignore your own models when voting?  In addition, anyone who votes for themselves in this kind of contest, where artistic merit and creativity are paramount and where there is no prize per se ends up looking like a spoiled brat who can't bear to see anyone else win or else an arrogant prick who thinks they have nothing to learn from other people.  Take your pick.

But if you can't understand by now what I mean when I say that voting for yourself in an art contest reeks of poor sportsmanship, I won't bother to keep explaining it.
Title: Modelling Contest Vote Thread
Post by: Darkshear on June 01, 2001, 09:04:00 pm
Shrike is completely right here...as I said before, lets go back and revote...and everyone vote for themselves...
Of course we will all tie with one vote apiece...and nothing will be accomplished but hey...
If you won't vote for anyone else, why should anyone else vote for you?

It's really a shame that so many people are so self centered. I am an artist because I like to entertain others...not because I am trying to be better then everyone else...
My two cents (Again)

Rob

Well I have to say that the Pod fighter is by far the best model that I have seen in this forum, for advance (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif). I was under the impression that the Model contest was for FS mods. but I would have to say for basic(Meaning FS mods) I liked the Liberty by Kazan looked real nice (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Thats my vote (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Title: Modelling Contest Vote Thread
Post by: Setekh on June 03, 2001, 01:27:00 am
It's meant to run in-game - so, presumably, it could be much better quality (higher qualities, bigger textures, etc.). The Bastion is not advanced.

I think.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Yeah...it's a lot simpler than a number of the other beginner models, so it's definately not advanced.

Congratulations to all the members that posted a contest entry and to those winners that have yet to be announced!!   A lot of effort when into making so many excellent models!!  My hats off to everyone for doing a fantastic job and coming up with some super ideas for FS ships.

Eventhough the voting is closed, I'm post my choices (3 hours time for getting a vote in is not good, not good):

There was only one entry that I saw for a space station, and the picture wouldn't display in the message.  Wish I could of seen some of the other models also, but the pics were gone.  So....

Lots of good Capital ship renders. Kazans GTCv Liberty, wEvil's GTEC DC165ev Havok destroyer, the GTVDn Bastion by Psycho, and the TCNS Arthur by Nyxian really stand out!  Can't wait for these to be setup for use in FS  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

SO...

for the basic: Autarch Class Dreadnought by Starwing - (clean lines) and should easly convert into a fs2 pof.

advanced:  mystery fighter by morris13, a GTVa mod? to the Mara, with better firepower, I hope.

All of the entries are damn good.  I can't wait to see them in action in campaigns.

My vote for advanced definitely has to go to the PodFighter by Darksheer.  I don't know how you do it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

For Basic, I'm going with the Beetle Class 2 Recon fighter.

Ok, when is the next modeling contest??? I've learned enough 3dsmax stuff to have a slight chance now  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Yeah, when is it?  I've got a cool idea for a non-combat sailship (using some made-up physics to justify the shape, naturally)...
Plus, Darkshear's explained about image mapping (thanks Darkshear  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) )

Heh heh, oh dearie me. No, we need to take a rest for a little while. And we're toying with other ideas for future HLP Contests...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Actually, we have some ideas, but why doesn't everyone else throw theirs in just to see if there is anything interesting?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
