I don't know why, but I have an inexplicable urge to play a sim game, the problem is that since I was never really too interested in them, I don't know what titles to look for.
I'm thinking something along the lines of Cleopatra or Zeus (from a few years back). You know the type, where you have to manage the economy, build granaries, temples and so forth. Demos are a big plus.
-
Dunno, I don't play 'em. Civilisation 3?
-
Alpha Centauri
Any SimCity
-
Isn't SimCity Classic freeware now?
-
Abandonware, more likely.
-
No, it's free, there's a Flash version on Maxis' website...

SimCity 2000 Deluxe is a fantastic game and set of tools. I think I spent four or five years between SC2k, SCURK, SimCopter and Streets of SimCity. Sadly these games have not aged well, due to their 'high detail' settings being abysmally low.
SC3K and Unlimited suffer from some problems with their graphics lagging, and there are some issues with the gameplay too, notably the water system and building bridges. SC4 was rewritten from the ground up and is a much better choice.
-
yea, but it takes a mean machine to run SC4 looking good. I know because I have trouble running it.
-
Alpha Centauri owns...
"The drones need you, they look up to you."
-
Melikes SimCity 2000 and SimTower.
-
SC4 is quite buggy; I ended up returning it.
There's apparently a graphics bug that stops hardware rendering running on Geforce FX series cards, and a second unrelated bug on ATI cards to with a lack of (IIRC....) back-buffer memory which turns of something else.....I still have SC2000, it's run but eventually you do sort of run out of options.
I think there's a new game of that ilk out set in ancient Egypt.... Children of the Nile it's called, I think....http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/920314.asp (rating averages about 75%, so probably one to try the demo on).

MOO1/2/3?
-
Dawn of War.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe, Locomotion... Transport Giant

Er.... city building, not city destroying.....

Oh. Sorry, my bad ;)
-
:wtf: :wtf:
erm, common mistake. I guess...
Anyway, some incarnation of SimCity is looking like the probable choice, but for some odd reason Maxis never released a SC4 demo. Hmm...guess I'll have to find creative ways around that little problem.

Caeser III, Pharoh, and/or Zeus (Was there a 4th one? Chinese or something?) are the kings of these sorts of games, and they only got better as the franchise moved from one to the other.
-
Civilization III
GODDAMN SPEARMEN DONT DESTROY ARMOURED FORCES FFS
-
Actually I've been playing Immortal Cities - Children of the Nile lately, it's the sequel to Pharoah. If you already have Pharoah, it's almost identical, but is a great city building/infrastructure building game :)

If you like SUPER EXTREME MICRO MANAGING! the only accurate word for it would be Nano Managing, like how you have a huge city with 10,000 population covering half the map, and one of your 30 or so temples is short 1 employee for a few seconds, and the whole city goes in the toilet! OH NO!!!! I CAN'T WORSHIP MARS AS OFTEN AS BEFORE NOW I HAVE TO MOVE OUT OF THE CITY!!!!IIIIVIVIV

Not that you'd be annoyed by such a small thing, of course........
-
SC2K is the best. Alpha Centauri is fun, buy the graphics are...weird, and it takes a few days to get used to the rules(read the manual, it's you're friend, though it's almost 200 pages long)
MoM is probably the most fun though since it has both city building and destroying.
-
Tropico! You play as a ruler of a Banana Republic. You can choose to be a communist overlord, or an installed CIA spy, or even an ex-pop star. Really quite fun, especially when you turn up the political climate. Those armed rebels are everywhere... :nervous:
There's also the sequel, Tropico 2, where you play as a Pirate King. It's much the same thing only you can send out a pirate ship to capture loot or raid settlements. I found it a bit harder to keep all the pirates happy. Never had enough wenches. :p

Capitalism is micromanagementy, and economicy.
-
Stuff it Carl. Still nothing better than Caesar III or Zeus.
-
Say, has anyone here ever played/heard of Afterlife? It's a Sim game where you rule over Heaven and Hell and have to build Rewards and Punishments for your world's souls.

oh, i'm not saying it's bad. I've been playing it on and off for years. I'm just saying it's really complicated.

Stronghold.
-
You could just play Rome : Total War and autoresolve all the battles if you're a dumbass
-
Transport Tycoon is a cute game. I like this game.
-
Galactic Corpor... erm Civilizations, it's a nice game...
A bit more abstract than the average sim but halfway between Pax Imperia and MOO3
