I have an irritating problem with my PC - it keeps switching off randomly, usually about once a week, and won't let me turn it back on until I disconnect it from the mains for about 10 seconds. It's probably the PSU, but the strangest thing is it happens far more frequently when I'm playing Warcraft 3 - newer games don't seem to affect it so I'm unsure.
Anyone got any ideas what's wrong with it?

PSU, I reckon. Don't you have a diagnostic program that shows your voltage levels?

it could be heat related too.

Don't think it's heat, which was my first thought too - my reported temperature's always wrong anyway (unless AMD CPUs can go for 5 hours at 98 degrees C without melting or becoming even slightly unstable), but even after the crashes I checked the temperature and it was only around 55. I'll have a look for my mobo disk with the utility on - should I be looking for voltage spikes aldo?

Think so. Last time I had a PSU problem the voltage was oscillating above and under the max-min ranges.... it wasn't by much, but it was enough to cause a shutdown.
You should maybe check your BIOS and see if you've got an over-temp shutdown kicking in somewhere; you should also be able to see your voltage there, I think.

that's strange, since WC3 isn't that demanding when compared to other new games (which you said you have and play).
that said, you up for a game of WC3 in the next day or so?

What are the proper voltage spreads for a AXP 1800+?
Currently:
V-Core is 1.42v
3.3v is 3.28v
5v is reading 4.87v
12v line is reading 11.58v
It looks like everything is undervolted, but the readings are steady so I'm okay right?
Or are these the reason for my random hard restarts that I commented about in my KOTOR thread?

well, it really depends somewhat. what brand of psu do you have? do you know for certain that the voltages is stable while you're playing? is there any known bugs about random restarts for kotor?

Hmm, well I recorded the values from the sensors, and this is what the ranges were in normal operation:
VCore - 1.744 constant (AMD Athlon XP 3000+)
12V - 12.416 - 12.544
5V - 4.919 - 4.981
3.3V - 3.298- 3.312
I'm running a QTec 550W PSU, but if there are voltage spikes or drops then I can't record them because the computer turns off before it can save them to disk. The 12V rail value strikes me as being too high, is there anything I can do to lower it?

Not really; unless you want to buy a new PSU. I need to check what the recommended ranges of my own machine are, though; I'm on a different one at the mo.
