Has anyone noticed that almost every single picture of the "revolution" in Lebanon has an attractive chick in the foreground? I must say, its a masterful propaganda tactic, though quite unusual, and provides a rather stark contrast to the burqa-clad women in other Middle-Eastern nations as they are typically represented in the media.
Kudos to whoever came up with this idea.

Everyone suddenly got really pissed at the Syrians' occupation (since the assassination of the former PM), so there have been demonstrations in Beirut, and the (pro-Syrian) government resigned under the pressure. Bush and Co. piled in as well, and now the Syrians have started to withdraw their troops (about 5000 out of the 14000 there in the next few weeks IIRC), pulling back to the borders. There are some concerns about whether it's going to be a full withdrawal, and there is speculation that there may be a substantial presence left in the Bakaa Valley (sp?)
Here's a starting point: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4327301.stm
EDIT: Bloody hell, my DeLorien's on the blink again...
-
Holy ****! Viva la revolution!
Hell, let's have a revolution in the UK!
What?
-
I'm glad to know I'm not the only person who noticed that, then.........
-
haha awesome! Teh Revolution is sexy! It's the same tactic as hiring attractive news anchors: It'll make you pay attention.
-
That's gettin posted on my uni's message board...
-
I remember reading the paper today, and thinking: "wow, the Lebanese are alot more attractive than the other middle eastern peoples"
Oh, and on a side note; Who else thinks that Bush saying that there should be no occupation in Lebanon is a little hypocritical?
-
That's actually brilliant. And a perfect opportunity to show off just how many hot women there are in Lebanon.
-
Dear god, YES!

Its a little hypocritical in the same way that the sun is "rather largish and somewhat warm."
-
Assuming that the new government gets on its feet soon, I think I know where im going first chance I get...
-
Indeed, they're quite nice. The last seems to have some sort of skin condition, though...

If Iraq were an occupation, that is to say a openly hostile military presence that is unwanted by a majority of the population of an area, I would agree with you.
However, 8 in 10 Iraqis actually like the Americans. They want us to leave, but they want the terrorists gone more and they know that we will leave when the terrorists are gone and Iraq is capable of defending herself.
-
Now, I don't know if those numbers are accurate... 8 in 10? I'd think it's morel ike 6 or 7 in 10...
-
What world are you living in? Commiting what amounts to genocide isn't really the best way to get on someone's good side.
But lets just drop it, and get back to what this is really all about. I offer these gifts in the spirit of friendship

It's not a propaganda pic, it's from National Geographic for crying out loud. It's also more than 10 years old, she doesn't look like that now, she looks like she's 50 thanks to the hard life she's had to lead.

I have the issue that does a compare and contrast of her then and now. Big change... kind of freaky. She's only 27-ish today too.

I'm not sure that's true. There's obviously the 20% Sunni population who want the US gone now, but lets not assume on the rest of the populations opinion; especially as the much vaunted election saw the Pentagons chosen candidate effectively chucked out on his ear by a significant margin. A Zogby poll (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4221493.stm) in Iraq found that 60-80% of Iraqis want troops to leave after elections - i.e. that'd be now.
This second source - http://www.cato.org/dailys/03-29-04-2.html - which I don't know the background of (if biased or unbiased) - states a 60% level of opposition. I've never seen any evidence that 80% of Iraqis like - or even tolerate - the American occupation. Or indeed the troops of the various other nations, such as ourselves, who got stuck in the quagmire. I certainly wouldn't pat yourself on the back too much over any Iraqis choosing the American occupation as the lesser of 2 evils - lesser of 2 evils is still evil, after all.
Except the US won't leave anyways, because they're building military bases there already - and quite a large number of it AFAIK (something like 12-20?). And Iraq makes a good base of operations against Syria and Iran, and seemingly bypasses the political (and logistical in the particular case of Iran) problems that would come from operating another invasion out of Saudi Arabia.

Yeah, thats true, however whats being pointed out is that the proportion of attractive females in the media portrayal of the "Cedar Revolution" is far higher than in the general population. Of course we've all seen better, but rarely in the course of political events, though to be fair Lebanon has an unusually high proportion of young people.
oh and, its looks like pro-Syrian groups are organizing their own protests as well, and they must be quite large since in my experience the BBC is usually pretty conservative with its reporting.

It's the anti-Israeli/anti-Western lot from what I've heard - Hez Bollah seem to be the driving force...
-
Ach, but that's not really anything to do with different political or national geographics, it's to do with horny photographers who've spend the last few weeks or months cooped up in a hotel room with nothing to do, or stuck on a long haul flight.
Just look at your average football match - either there's one cameraman assigned to spot totty in the crowd (as oppossed to Totti on the pitch....), or they've all got roaming eyes.
EDIT; er, this post has absolutely nothing to do with Hezbollah, fo course.
-
Let's face it - why else would you take up photography? :p

I can't reasonably claim that Syria is a great force for good in Lebanon, but I will say that I believe that its a bit more complicated than simply taking it as established fact that the Syrian presence is nothing more than overt imperialism and subjugation of a people who unanimously denounce the occupation. Damn, my teacher warned me about run-on sentences.

Anyone else noticed the english protest signs? Methinks theres a bit of stage management going on, hardly surprising after the Ukraine and georgia. Seems to be working.
Not really gonna change anything though.
-
You're surprised?

are you saying the US is behind this?

first post: the third from bottom, the girl on the right. she's without a doubt the hottest. so is the girl in the top picture. it's a close tie. wow!

Don't forget Serbia and uhm, the botched attempt in Belarus. There is almost without a doubt "media management" going on, but that's nothing new. I don't think its fair to paint the entire opposition, here or anywhere else, with the same brush as the USAID/Soros crowd, just cause the Western sugar daddies are partly behind it. I'm actually quite ambiguous on the issue, because the governments being rallied against in this latest round of revolutions are thugs down to the last, it just so happens that the legitimate opposition and cynical Western interest meet....or something.
edit: My position is that I support enforcing the Taif Agreement, and then take it from there. For all the undue influence and protection racketeering, the Syrian presence probably does have its uses.

Nah, just noting that most of the world reads English while much of the world does not read Arabic. Makes sense.

I demand that the Defense Department hold a press conference to address this appearance of hotties in Lebanon.
-
It wouldn't suprise me personally if we were though. We were heavly involved in OPNOR in Yugoslavia.
-
OTPOR
Not to mention their counterparts in Ukraine and Georgia (erm, PORA in Ukraine, Kmara in Georgia, Zubr and Mjaft in Belarus and Albania respectively ). Its the new style revolution, the new craze these days. They probably figure, why mess with a good thing. Also, keep and eye on Moldova, ("http://www.exile.ru/2005-February-25/feature_story.html") it looks like they're trying to ride the Orange Revolution wave.
-
And what message are they trying to send with this picture, anyway? Because I'm about ready to go over there and help them, ehh... protest.

I think it's pretty hasty to say "DEMOCRACY IS ON THE MARCH" yet. Don't confuse the national independence movements with democracy movements - they often walk hand in hand, but not always.
-
Funny how everyone is blaming Syria for the assasination of the Ex-leader of Lebanon without any evidence.
So much for 'innocent until proven guilty' eh? ;)
Oh yes, and nice Lebanese hotties :) Maybe we should introduce the to the sexual revolution? ;)
-
No, see the thing, you don't need evidence. I am yet to see evidence that:
1) bin Laden was responsbile for 9/11
2) Saddam had WMD (or even "programs")
3) Saddam had links to al Queda
4) Eating cheesburgers in bad for me
Accusations are enough, you should know that. Poor Flip, so naive.
-
LOL Bane of my life, someone tells me something like 'We're an equal opportunities employer' and like an idiot I believe them, and then, just to add the cherry to the cake, they are actually surprised that I believed them!
A friend of mine got hit by a car whilst eating a cheeseburger though, couldn't see over the sesame seeds :(

Lol, Hez'bollah put half a million people on the streets of Beruit today. So much for this revolution, hotties or no.

Seems the trend is catching. I for one an looking towards a prolonged period of unrest and protest
