Is anybody still working on any missions/campaigns for FS1? I've played almost all the (good) ones that are available, and since I am not so terribly good at making missions either (can do, it's just that my brain doesn't never really work when designing 'em), I have a terrible need to get my hands on something new! :(
And don't mention the Port, I'm talking about the real thing!

Have you checked the VolitionWatch archives?

Hippo and I are working on a couple FS1 campaigns. :)
-
So you should be able to get a couple of FS1 Campaign just after [glow=yellow]HELL[/glow] freezes over.
:p
Maybe I should concentrate on my own campaign beforew criticizing others:nervous:

Yes, that where I got most of my FS1 missions to begin with.
But it's good to hear that somebody is still working on FS1; I don't know where I would be without you guys. :)

Playing FS2 instead? :p
-
Nah, I would propably be replaying the FS1 main campaign :p
-
Seriously, get FS2.
-
I have it. Infact, I've had it for 5-6 years now. I do play it here and then, but I like the original a lot more; not that there is anything wrong with FS2 in my opinion, I just kinda prefer the first one, that's all.
Is that all? :D

I liked the atmosphere of FS1 better, even though FS2's overall plot was better.
Probably why I'm concentrating so much on my Side Project (ETF) instead of sticking with HFH. :P

Then you'll port them to FS2. :D

I'd have to agree with this. FS1 just "felt" better. You felt much more vulnerable, and the situation seemed much more desperate than FS2. And the music was better.

Something tells me that I perhaps shouldn't have deleted my old campaign I was working on, which was going to be for both FS2 and FS1. FS1 does have a better atmosphere. The animation and cutscenes is also smoother. I hope that future campaigns will capture the essence of FS1, which was a lot more vast, terrifying, and dazzling.
If you're an FS1 fan, I'd advise looking into utilizing the FS2 engine, and FS2_Open and then bringing in your favorite elements from FS1 into the engine. A lot could be done.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with you there. I just finished replaying the main FS2 campaign; I then went back and replayed the FS1 Port. After looking at both of them, I can honestly say that I believe FS2 has a much more realistic, dire mood to it. As good as FS1 is, it has a few too many "whatever" missions that don't tie into the overall storyline; I'm talking about your average "destroy cargo depot/escort ships" missions. While FS2 did have a few of these missions, overall, most of the missions you flew directly tied into what was going on in the storyline, giving it a greater sense of realism. I'd also have to say that, as intimidating as the Lucifer was, I think the Sathanas has it beat by a hair; it's just something about seeing those four...massive...beams. The addition of the SOC missions in FS2 was another great example of the addition of more depth. What really convinced me, though, was the voiceacting in FS2, particularly Robert Loggia as Petrarch; his command briefings were hands-down the best out of either game and really made you feel like you were that one small soldier, fighting an insurmountable enemy. The voiceactor for Snipes also did a superb job; the missions with him had the most natural chatter of any mission in either game. There were some other instances, too, such as Alpha 2 getting royally pissed at Command in the third mission or so. :p I've heard a lot of people say that FS1 has the better atmosphere, but after this latest replay, I'm convinced that FS2 has that extra something that puts it on top. :)

FS2 has a more epi feel to it. It's more like playing a movie.
FS1, on the other hand, has those 'destroy cargo' missions that don't tie directly into the storyline, but I think they make more sense. Every battle's not going to have some big plot twist or be key to the war effort. Some really would just be "We've found a bunch of the enemy's supplies, which aren't guarded that well. Go blow them up."
-
I njoyed both Fs', but in different ways; FS2 struck me as more professionally (story) scripted and acted, and more atmospheric. It had some truly memorable moments, particularly in the nebula.
FS1 was less spectacular IMO (especially capships), but had some better mission designs (chasing the Lucifer to the node struck me as a great mission where it isn't all about combat, for example), and the feeling of shield-less dogfighting was a nice change (me having played FS2 first).

Once the Port guys are done with ST:R, I'd love to see them go back over the FS1 main campaign and do the same thing to it... there are some missions that don't fit in, some that just don't work, and still others that could use tweaks...

I'd rather they didn't; ST had a lot of flaws and deserved the edit, but you shouldn't mess with a classic. :D
Yes, that means you, Lucas. :p

You can have any personal opinions you want about these games, but since I don't like the FS2 main campaign, does it give me the right to "update" it? No. You should at least respect the work that :v: has done on these games, no matter if you dislike a mission or two.
That is all I have to say.
EDIT: Sorry if I sounded a little harsh, didn't mean to. Peace :D

I'm not saying "update" everything. All I'm saying is that the obvious filler missions could use some tweaks to make them fit into the storyline a little better.
-
I don't think FS1 has too many filler missions (though Ruota Della Fortuna comes in mind), but I think every game needs them.
While protecting the GTC Orff might not save the universe, doesn't it give the player a feeling of immersion, as you would propably be doing that sort of thing during "real" war aswell.
And again, my apologies if I was being little bit rude earlier on (or is it just me?:nervous: )
-
actually, the GTC Orff was an easy mission that command sent you on, to get a feel of 'real' combat.

The original Freespace is obviously a great game. But I think the sequel really developed the storyline into a much more epic, cinematic tale, and whenever I think about how great the series, I'm always thinking about the Knossos portal and the destruction of Capella. So many questions...it's all so fascinating. With the original, I didn't really feel there were any questions about the storyline. The Shivans were big bad super death aliens, end of. But the sequal really made me question what their motives were, and the actual size of their entire fleet. I find the Shivans to be an utterly fascinating race, and that's all from Freespace 2.
-
you don't have to use italics for the names. ;)
Shivans in FS1: We don't know anything except that they want to control jump nodes.
Shivans in FS2: Still nothing except they have a master's degree in fast shipbuilding. :D
