Ok, i've had this problem for several months now, and have seached far and wide for a solution, but have found nothing, and now its starting to be very irritating...
Pretty much randomly, when i right click something, or open an expandable menu (like the start menu) and don't click something immediately, the menu freeses, and everything slowly stops working... I can [winkey]+L into the login screen, but then when i log in, the screen never changes, other than showing a box where the frosen menu was. I can't do anything from there on. If i don't [winkey]+L, i can switch to different windows of programs, but not folders, and if i click the effected window (like if it happened in a folder, or a toolbar menu), it freeses (same if i try to click another menu). All this time, i can move the mouse, but can't do anything with it... It never kills the system, so i have to cold-boot it on my own, and then it goes back to running normal, untill the next time it randomly happens...
Any help?

I think I've had similar problems but not quite to the extent that you do. I just blame it on windows deteriorating over time. Sometime I have a lot of problems like this if there is a CD in one of the drives that can't be read or has errors.

it doesn't matter if there's a cd in or anything, and the install is only 8 months old...

sounds like it's time for a new one though.

8 months? i never make it more then 3 before I put XP back together again.

Sounds like it's nicely clogged. Reformat-reinstall is the way to go  And don't fill it with so much crap next time! :p
